The Resurgence of Hallucinogen Drugs in Clinical Research.

Since the dawn of civilization, ancient cultures have utilized hallucinogens from plants and fungi in the context of religious and healing practices. Recently, their use has expanded to other cultures. Hallucinogens are natural or synthetic substances that alter the perception of reality at nontoxic doses, producing intense psychological and physiological effects. The initial research on hallucinogens began in the 1950s. However, their non-medical use, studies without proper controls, and negative social opinion resulted in legal restrictions that limited their use for clinical and preclinical

The intergenerational effects of paternal incarceration on children's social and psychological well-being from early childhood to adolescence.

The present study sought to unravel the psychological processes through which mass incarceration, specifically paternal incarceration, is negatively affecting the next generation of children. Data came from 4,327 families from 20 cities who participated in a 10-year longitudinal study. Parents and children reported on children's rule-breaking behaviors and depressive symptoms when they were on average ages 5 (2003-2006), 9 (2007-2010), and 15 (2014-2017). Parental surveys and disposition information were combined to assess paternal incarceration at each age. Results showed that children who ex

Evidence for the Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: A Literature Review.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a common infectious disease of the female reproductive tract, is mainly characterized by abdominal/pelvic pain and tenderness of the uterus, cervix, or adnexa on physical exam. In recent years, its incidence has gradually increased yearly due to numerous factors, including sexually transmitted diseases and intrauterine operations. Based on self-report of PID in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2014 survey, PID impacts approximately 2.5 million women in the US during their reproductive age. Although empiric treatments such as

[A Multidimensional Assessment of Emotion Regulation in Adolescent Non-Suicidal Self-Injury].

The ability to regulate one's emotions (emotion regulation, ER) with regard to individual short- and long-term goals presents one of the most central human skills. A disrupted development of ER skills is associated with psychopathological outcomes. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) presents a frequent and impairing phenomenon among young individuals. Disruptions regarding various aspects of ER are involved in the development and maintenance of NSSI. In the present study, we examined ER from a multidimensional perspective, including a sample of female adolescents meeting DSM-5 criteria for NSSI d

Juvenile homicide offenders: Why they were involved in serious crime.

The perpetration of murders by juveniles (individuals under age 18) has been a serious concern in the United States since the 1960s. As a result of four decisions by the United States Supreme Court during the 21st century, the likelihood that juvenile homicide offenders will be released back into society is substantially higher than it was in the year 2000. Given these changes in sentencing policies and practices, understanding why youths under 18 engage in homicidal behavior is more important than ever for two reasons: to prevent juveniles from killing in the first place and to determine whet

Exogenous Ketones as Therapeutic Signaling Molecules in High-Stress Occupations: Implications for Mitigating Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Future Research.

High-stress occupations (ie, firefighters, military personnel, police officers, etc.) are often plagued by cardiometabolic diseases induced by exposure to chronic stressors. Interrupted sleep cycles, poor dietary patterns, lack of physical activity, and smoke exposure along with simultaneous psychological stressors promote chronic low-grade inflammation and excessive oxidative stress. Collectively, these data suggest that practical interventions which might mitigate the underlying pathologies of these cardiometabolic diseases are warranted. Ketones, specifically R-βHB, modulates intracellular

CNS Safety Screening Under ICH S7A Guidelines Requires Observations of Multiple Behavioral Units to Assess Motor Function.

In the adoption of behavior as a critical end point in safety pharmacology and neurotoxicity screening, federal regulatory agencies have shifted the predominating scientific perspective from pharmacology back to the experimental analysis of behavior (psychology). Nowhere is this more evident than in tier I safety assessment of the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS and peripheral nervous system have multiple behavioral units of general activity. A complete picture of the motor control neural pathways cannot be measured by any one single approach. The CNS safety protocols under International
