Shoulder complaints more likely in volleyball players with a thickened bursa or supraspinatus tendon neovessels.

Shoulder problems are common in volleyball and greatly impede both training and player performance. Subacromial bursa (SAB) thickening and tendon neovascularity have shown relevance in other populations, but their relationship with the development of shoulder complaints has not been investigated in volleyball players or overhead-throwing athletes. The study aim was to examine the role of SAB thickness, neovascularization of the supraspinatus tendon, shoulder strength, range of motion (ROM), player position, and age in the development of shoulder complaints in professional volleyball players. Opsonophagocytosis of Chlamydia pneumoniae by Human Monocytes and Neutrophils.

The human respiratory tract pathogen Chlamydia pneumoniae, which causes mild to severe infections, has been associated with the development of chronic inflammatory diseases. To understand the biology of C. pneumoniae infections, several studies have investigated the interaction between C. pneumoniae and professional phagocytes. However, these studies have been conducted under nonopsonizing conditions, making the role of opsonization in C. pneumoniae infections elusive. Thus, we analyzed complement and antibody opsonization of C. pneumoniae and evaluated how opsonization affects chlamydial infe

An Observational Study of Human Leptospirosis in Seychelles.

A 1-year population-based prospective study was launched in Seychelles, a country with one of the highest human incidence of leptospirosis worldwide, to describe the characteristic features of the epidemiology of the disease and highlight the most prominent risk factors. Diagnosis was based on the IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, microscopic agglutination test, and real-time PCR. A standardized questionnaire was administered to 219 patients aged ≥ 13 years consulting for acute febrile illness. The high incidence of leptospirosis in Seychelles was confirmed. The disease was particularly s

Collegiate Neurosurgery in Disaster and Mass Medical Emergencies: Lessons Learned from Mexico.

Every year, natural or people-generated disasters disrupt the functioning of society, causing human, and material loses, which lead to an increase in the demand for medical attention. In the morning of September 19, 2017, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico City and four other cities, leaving around 19 million people affected and 331 dead. Although the medical response was timely, most of the efforts fell short because demand exceeded responsiveness. This incident evidenced the challenges that we have as caregivers with mass medical emergency, and the need for direct and well-structured i

US Assessment of Sports-related Hip Injuries.

Traumatic and overuse hip injuries occur frequently in amateur and professional athletes. After clinical assessment, imaging plays an important role in diagnosis and in defining care management of these injuries. Ultrasonography (US) is being increasingly used in assessment of hip injuries because of the wide availability of US machines, the lower cost, and the unique real-time imaging capability, which allows both static and dynamic evaluation as well as guidance of point-of-care interventions such as fluid aspiration and steroid injection. Accurate diagnosis of hip injuries is often challeng

Are non-pregnant women afraid of childbirth? Prevalence and predictors of fear of childbirth in students.

Introduction: Fear of childbirth (FOC) has been mostly studied in peripartum women; however, it can be present in non-pregnant young women, and the question is whether it occurs even before pregnancy planning. Objective: (1) to determine the prevalence of clinically significant FOC in non-pregnant female students, and (2) to investigate the role of anxiety sensitivity (AS), trait anxiety, childbirth pain expectancy, and sources of birth knowledge for FOC. Methods: Non-pregnant female students (N = 374) from different study programmes (health studies, social sciences and humanities, and biotech

Myasthenia Gravis and Its Aeromedical Implications.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune condition where antibodies form against the acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, eventually causing damage to the motor end plate. The clinical features include muscle fatigability as well as ocular, bulbar, and limb weakness, which can have implications on the role of a pilot or air traffic controller. This retrospective study reviewed the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA) experience of myasthenia gravis. METHODS: A search of the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority medical records database from 1990 to 2016 i

Attitudinal variables and a possible mediating mechanism for vaccination practice in health care workers of a local hospital in L'Aquila (Italy).

Active immunization is an important concern for health care workers (HCWs) susceptible subjects and potential sources of infection for patients. However, the vaccine coverage for vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) is below recommended standards. The aims of the study were to estimate the hospitals' HCWs' susceptibility and vaccination coverage rates for VPDs and to analyze the role of HCWs' attitudes and knowledge as determinants of the immunization practices. A cross-sectional study enrolled 334 HCWs (physicians, nurses, others) at local hospital in L'Aquila (Italy). By means of an anonymous
