Patient Characteristics and Outcomes by Sex and Smoking Status in Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Those with established symptomatic cardiopulmonary disease should attend secondary prevention programs. Attendance at these programs is known to differ by sex and smoking status, with females and those who smoke being less likely to attend. However, little is known about whether the risk factors of being female and smoking are cumulative, and how outcomes from secondary prevention differ by these subgroups. Accordingly, we sought to examine patient characteristics at entry and outcomes of those attending pulmonary (PR) and cardiac rehabilitation (CR) by sex and smoking status. A

Modulation of brain activity and tremor severity by NeuroEpo in Parkinson's patients with varying tremor amplitudes.

BACKGROUND: Tremors, particularly those related to Parkinson's disease (PD), significantly affect quality of life. In this study, we inspected the effects of NeuroEpo versus placebo on brain function and tremor inhibition in patients with high-amplitude tremors (HAT) and low-amplitude tremors (LAT). OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of NeuroEpo in enhancing coherence and power spectral density (PSD) relative to tremor severity, and to explore differences in stimulation parameters and medication requirements between patients with HAT and LAT. METHODS: A double-blind randomized controlled tri

Neuromodulation for the management of chronic pelvic pain syndromes: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pelvic pain is a burdensome condition that involves multiple medical sub-specialties and is often difficult to treat. Sacral stimulation for functional bladder disease has been well established, but little large-scale evidence exists regarding utilization of other neuromodulation techniques to treat chronic pelvic pain. Emerging evidence does suggest that neuromodulation is a promising treatment, and we aim to characterize the use and efficacy of such techniques for treating chronic pelvic pain syndromes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of the literature demonst

Race and sex differences in HDL peroxide content among American adults with and without type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) plays a critical role in protection against atherosclerosic and cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). In addition to contributing to clearing excess vascular cholesterol, HDL particles exhibit antioxidative functions, helping to attenuate adverse effects of oxidized low-density lipoproteins. However, these beneficial properties can be undermined by oxidative stress, inflammation, and unhealthy lifestyles and diet, as well as influenced by race and sex. Thus, when assessing cardiovascular risk, it is important to consider multifactorial aspects of HDL, inclu

Milnacipran Ameliorates Executive Function Impairments following Frontal Lobe Traumatic Brain Injury in Male Rats: A Multimodal Behavioral Assessment.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) affect more than 10 million patients annually worldwide, causing long-term cognitive and psychosocial impairments. Frontal lobe TBIs commonly impair executive function, but laboratory models typically focus primarily on spatial learning and declarative memory. We implemented a multi-modal approach for clinically relevant cognitive-behavioral assessments of frontal lobe function in rats with TBI and assessed treatment benefits of the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, milnacipran (MLN). Two attentional set-shifting tasks (AST) evaluated cognitive flexib

Post-traumatic stress symptomatology and adjustment of medical oncology practice during the COVID-19 pandemic among adult patients with cancer in a day care hospital.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic may induce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among patients with cancer, who also face adaptations to their treatment. The authors assessed the occurrence of PTSD symptoms, investigated pandemic-induced adjustments in medical oncology practice in patients with cancer, and explored risk factors for PTSD and the association between PTSD symptoms, insomnia, and quality of life (QoL). METHODS: This prospective French study was conducted in patients with solid/hematologic tumors who were receiving medical treatment in the day care departments of 2 can

Thyroid Function in Pregnant Women With Moderate to Severe Alcohol Consumption Is Related to Infant Developmental Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) have an estimated global prevalence of 2-5% of births, but prevalence is reported to be as high as 15.5% for FASD in certain high-risk communities in South Africa. Preclinical studies demonstrate that alcohol consumption during pregnancy interferes with thyroid hormone availability and function and negatively impacts exposed offspring. Very little is currently reported on this phenomenon in humans. METHODS: This pilot study was embedded in the Drakenstein Child Health Study, a multi-disciplinary longitudinal birth cohort study investigatin

Effects of behavioural exercise therapy on the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation for chronic non-specific low back pain: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, a multidisciplinary rehabilitation named "behavioural medical rehabilitation" (BMR) is available for treatment of chronic low back pain (clbp). A central component of BMR is standard exercise therapy (SET), which is directed mainly to improve physical fitness. There is a need to address psychosocial factors within SET and therefore to improve behavior change with a focus on the development of self-management skills in dealing with clbp. Furthermore, short-term effectiveness of BMR with a SET has been proven, but the impact of a behavioural exercise therapy (BET) for imp

Neurosurgical treatment of bipolar depression: defining treatment resistance and identifying surgical targets.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a complex psychiatric disorder that is often underrecognized, misdiagnosed, and challenging to detect. During the past decade, substantial progress has been made in the development of pharmacotherapeutic and psychosocial interventions for various phases of BD. Notwithstanding these developments, the majority of BD individuals, and particularly patients with bipolar depression, receiving guideline concordant care do not experience syndromal or functional recovery, underscoring the need for novel treatments. Early success with deep brain stimulation (DBS) in

[Strategies to prevent age-related cognitive decline].

The increasing aging demographics never seen before is associated with the enormous challenge of dementia epidemics which urgently needs a paradigm shift in the approach to cognitive functions in health and disease. If on one hand the achievement or maintenance of a healthy lifestyle should be a medical priority, the early recognition of cognitive disturbances is mandatory. Cognitive impairment is not only associated with disability and lack of compliance and adherence, but also with dangerous geriatric syndromes such as instability, falls, and delirium. The evaluation of cognitive performance

Reproductive ecology and the endometrium: physiology, variation, and new directions.

Endometrial function is often overlooked in the study of fertility in reproductive ecology, but it is crucial to implantation and the support of a successful pregnancy. Human female reproductive physiology can handle substantial energy demands that include the production of fecund cycles, ovulation, fertilization, placentation, a 9-month gestation, and often several years of lactation. The particular morphology of the human endometrium as well as our relative copiousness of menstruation and large neonatal size suggests that endometrial function has more resources allocated to it than many othe

Patterns of fall-risk perception and response among nursing home residents: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite guideline-recommended multicomponent programs, fall-prevention efforts in nursing homes often show variable uptake because residents differ in their perceptions of fall risk and their responses to preventive support. Standardized approaches may therefore fail to account for differences in how residents appraise fall risk and cope with prevention-related challenges, making it difficult to tailor strategies to different resident profiles. User personas, defined as profiles that integrate salient characteristics across key dimensions, offer a practical way to capture this hete

Non-pharmacological interventions for older adults with mild cognitive impairment: an umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate stage between normal aging and dementia in which preventive interventions may help delay cognitive decline. Multicomponent non-pharmacological interventions (NPTs) combining physical, cognitive, and psychosocial components have shown promising results; however, the available evidence remains heterogeneous. OBJECTIVE: Synthesize evidence from systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMAs) evaluating multicomponent, non-pharmacological interventions designed to improve cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults with MCI.

The Impact of Complex Oral Rehabilitation on TMJ and Postural Alterations in Patients with Scapulohumeral Fractures.

Background and Objectives: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are prevalent conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint and associated musculature, arising from a complex interplay of biomechanical, neuromuscular, and psychosocial factors. Increasing evidence supports functional interconnections among the TMJ, cervical spine, and shoulder girdle, suggesting that dysfunction in one region may influence others; however, these relationships remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to evaluate the association between scapulohumeral trauma, postural abnormalities, and TMDs, and to asse
