Biomechanical Evolution in Longitudinal Analysis of Lumbar Stress Injuries in Fast Bowlers: A Systematic Review.

Fast bowling involves a highly complex and physically demanding motion sequence, placing fast bowlers under substantially greater workloads than other cricketing roles. Consequently, they experience a disproportionately high incidence of injuries, particularly to the lower back, with lumbar stress fractures being especially common in adolescent bowlers. These injuries are multifactorial, arising from repeated exposure to high spinal loads, underscoring the need for comprehensive biomechanical analysis and targeted preventive strategies to enhance safety and prolong athletic careers. Comparing the outcomes of fingertip-to-palm and fingertip-to-forearm two-stage flexor tendon reconstruction for isolated flexor digitorum profundus tendon injuries.

Flexor tendon injuries of the hand have devastating consequences when primary tendon repair fails or left untreated in the first place. Flexor tendon reconstruction is a substantial treatment option to obtain functional digit. In this study, we aimed to compare the functional outcomes and technical feasibility of fingertip-to-palm and fingertip-to-forearm tendon reconstruction methods. Thirty-five patients were divided into two groups according to the proximal attachment site of the free tendon grafts. Group I consisted of 18 patients whose tendon grafts were placed from fingertip-to-palm (zon

The Ulnar Olecranon-Coronoid Notch Angle Affects Terminal Elbow Extension in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Limitations to terminal elbow extension (TEE) in pediatric populations have been commonly associated with the degree of ligamentous laxity and not bony factors. Ligamentous laxity, quantified through the Beighton score, is criticized for unreliably assessing joint mobility. This study aims to show that the olecranon-coronoid notch angle (OCNA) affects TEE in healthy children and adolescents. METHODS: A retrospective study of 711 pediatric patients treated for upper extremity and shoulder injuries was cross-sectionally studied at 2 tertiary centers from 2014 to 2021. Radiographs we…

A Nested Mixed Effects Multicenter Model Examining the Risk Factors for Pediatric Trauma Return Visits Within 72 Hours.

BACKGROUND: Return visits within 72 h are an important metric in evaluating the performance of emergency rooms. This has not been well studied in the pediatric trauma population. We sought to determine novel risk factors for return visits to the emergency department (ED) after trauma that may assist in identifying patients most at risk of revisit. METHODS: We used the Cerner Health Facts Database to retrieve data from 34 EDs across the United States that care for pediatric trauma patients aged <15 y. The data consist of 610,845 patients and 816,571 ED encounters. We retrieved variables encomp

Surgical Management of Proximal Interphalangeal Joint Fracture-Dislocations: A Review of Outcomes.

Background: Treatment of proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) fracture-dislocations is difficult given the potential long-term complications of the involved finger and entire hand. Several surgical methods have been utilized for management of these injuries, none of which have shown consistently favorable results. The purpose of this systematic review of the literature is to report the post-operative outcomes of multiple treatment modalities for PIPJ fracture-dislocations in various studies. Methods: A literature review of PubMed and EMBASE databases was performed for all articles on PIPJ fra

Bionic Upper Limb Reconstruction: A Valuable Alternative in Global Brachial Plexus Avulsion Injuries-A Case Series.

Global brachial plexopathies including multiple nerve root avulsions may result in complete upper limb paralysis despite surgical treatment. Bionic reconstruction, which includes the elective amputation of the functionless hand and its replacement with a mechatronic device, has been described for the transradial level. Here, we present for the first time that patients with global brachial plexus avulsion injuries and lack of biological shoulder and elbow function benefit from above-elbow amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation. Between 2012 and 2017, forty-five patients with global brachial p

Comparing functional outcome of triangle tilt surgery performed before versus after two years of age.

BACKGROUND: Many patients each year who are born with obstetric brachial plexus injuries eventually do not achieve complete recovery. As a result of the primary nerve injuries, these patients will often develop bony deformities involving the shoulder joint as a secondary consequence. The triangle tilt surgery has been shown to be an effective procedure to correct these deformities and has been performed on patients ranging in age from less than a year old to adolescence. The purpose of this retrospective study is to compare outcomes of triangle tilt surgery performed on patients before the age

The long-term functional outcome of type II odontoid fractures managed non-operatively.

Odontoid fractures currently account for 9-15% of all adult cervical spine fractures, with type II fractures accounting for the majority of these injuries. Despite recent advances in internal fixation techniques, the management of type II fractures still remains controversial with advocates still supporting non-rigid immobilization as the definitive treatment of these injuries. At the NSIU, over an 11-year period between 1 July 1996 and 30 June 2006, 66 patients (n = 66) were treated by external immobilization for type II odontoid fractures. The medical records, radiographs and CT scans of all

Patient-reported outcome after peripheral nerve injury.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated patient-reported outcome and the factors associated with disability after an upper extremity nerve injury. We hypothesized that patients at least 6 months after injury would report considerable disability and that pain would be the strongest predictor of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score. METHODS: After research ethics board approval, the medical charts of patients with these inclusion criteria were reviewed: adults; presenting to a nerve surgeon; 6 months or greater after nerve injury. Patients completed the DASH questionnaire and the

Association of post-stroke hemiplegic shoulder pain with sleep quality, mood, and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain (HSP) is a prevalent post-stroke complication, characterized by paralysis, spasticity, altered sensation, neuropathic pain, shoulder subluxation, and soft tissue injuries such as rotator cuff tears and bicipital tendonitis. Muscle imbalances, weakness, and altered scapular positioning further contribute to the exacerbation of HSP. These factors lead to poorer functional outcomes, reduced hand function, and difficulties in performing daily activities. HSP is often associated with substantial mental and physical health burdens. The disorder significantly impa
