Unequal Protective Effects of Parental Educational Attainment on the Body Mass Index of Black and White Youth.

BACKGROUND: Parental educational attainment is shown to be protective against health problems; the Minorities' Diminished Returns theory, however, posits that these protective effects tend to be smaller for socially marginalized groups particularly blacks than whites. AIMS: To explore racial differences in the effect of parental educational attainment on body mass index (BMI) in a national sample of US adolescents. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we used baseline data of 10,701 (8678 white and 2023 black) 12-17 years old adolescents in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health

Association between maternal shift work and infant neurodevelopmental outcomes: results from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study with propensity-score-matching analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal shift work is associated with preterm delivery, small-for-gestational-age new-borns, childhood obesity and future behavioural problems. However, the adverse effects on and interactions of maternal shift work with infant neurodevelopment remain uncertain. Therefore, we examined the associations between maternal-shift-work status and infant neurodevelopmental parameters. METHODS: The Taiwan Birth Cohort Study is a nationwide birth cohort study following representatively sampled mother-infant pairs in 2005. The participants' development and exposure conditions were assessed

Multi-Service Programs for Pregnant and Parenting Women with Substance Use Concerns: Women's Perspectives on Why They Seek Help and Their Significant Changes.

Within Canada, several specialized multi-service prevention programs work with highly vulnerable pregnant and early parenting women with substance use issues. Experiences of trauma, mental health, poverty, and other factors associated with the social determinants of health complete the picture. Program evaluations have demonstrated their value, but less has been said as to women's reasons for choosing to seek help from these programs, what they were hoping to gain, or what difference they believe has occurred as a result. The Co-creating Evidence project is a multi-year (2017-2020) national ev

[Dissemination of psychotherapy modules for traumatized refugees : Experience gained from trauma work in crisis and conflict regions].

With each additional accumulative exposure to severe and traumatic stressors, the likelihood of developing mental health problems and physical diseases increases. Displaced individuals have usually experienced a number of serious threats to health due to organized violence in their home country or attacks during the flight. Frequently, domestic violence adds additional strain to the stressors experienced. The resulting impairments in psychosocial functioning reduce the resources needed for social adjustment and integration. Social exclusion then in turn often further aggravates the existing me

Healthy body, healthy mind: A mixed methods study of outcomes, barriers and supports for exercise by people who have chronic moderate-to-severe acquired brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Few people with chronic moderate-to-severe brain injury are following recommended physical activity guidelines. OBJECTIVE: Investigate effects of planned, systematic physical activity while cultivating social and emotional well-being of people with chronic moderate-to-severe brain injury. HYPOTHESIS: Moderate-to-intensive physical activity would be associated with improvements in impairment and activity limitation measures (endurance, mobility, gait speed) immediately post-intervention and six weeks later (study week 12). METHODS: The intervention was a single group pre-/post-in

One Health Research in Northern Tanzania - Challenges and Progress.

East Africa has one of the world's fastest growing human populations-many of whom are dependent on livestock-as well as some of the world's largest wildlife populations. Humans, livestock, and wildlife often interact closely, intimately linking human, animal, and environmental health. The concept of One Health captures this interconnectedness, including the social structures and beliefs driving interactions between species and their environments. East African policymakers and researchers are recognising and encouraging One Health research, with both groups increasingly playing a leading role i…

Adolescents with disabilities participate in the shopping mall: facilitators and barriers framed according to the ICF.

PURPOSE: Community participation is restricted for youth with disabilities. The mall is an important gathering place where adolescents often socialise and develop community living skills, yet participation may be restricted. The aim of this study was to evaluate the facilitators and barriers to participation in a shopping mall through the perspectives of adolescents with disabilities. METHOD: Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with adolescents aged 12-19 years with a physical and/or sensory disability. Audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and coded following a template

Gender, coping strategies, homelessness stressors, and income generation among homeless young adults in three cities.

This study examined gender differences among homeless young adults' coping strategies and homelessness stressors as they relate to legal (e.g., full-time employment, selling personal possessions, selling blood/plasma) and illegal economic activity (e.g., selling drugs, theft, prostitution). A sample of 601 homeless young adults was recruited from 3 cities (Los Angeles, CA [n = 200], Austin, TX [n = 200], and Denver, CO [n = 201]) to participate in semi-structured interviews from March 2010 to July 2011. Risk and resilience correlates of legal and illegal economic activity were analyzed using s

The change in motivating factors influencing commencement, adherence and retention to a supervised resistance training programme in previously sedentary post-menopausal women: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding motivators for exercise participation in post-menopausal women may impact retention to exercise programmes and inform intervention trial designs. The purpose of this investigation was to assess self-reported motivational factors influencing adherence and retention to a 24-week progressive resistance training programme. METHODS: Post-menopausal females (n = 34) were passively recruited to undertake a 24-week progressive resistance training protocol, in small-group sessions, on three non-consecutive days of the week. Attendance was recorded by the researcher. Qualitati

Iranian Azeri women's perceptions of unintended pregnancy: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Many women, throughout their life cycle, experience unintended pregnancy and its subsequent induced abortion. Nonetheless, women's perceptions of this phenomenon - particularly in countries prohibiting elective abortion - are poorly known. The aim of this study was to explore Iranian Azeri women's perceptions of unintended pregnancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a conventional content analysis study conducted in Tabriz, Iran. The data were collected through 31 semi-structured interviews with 23 women who had recently experienced an unintended pregnancy. The study participants w

Injecting transition risk and depression among Mexican American non-injecting heroin users.

INTRODUCTION: Existing research has documented high comorbid rates for injecting drug use (IDU) and social and health consequences including HIV infection, a condition that disproportionately affects U.S. Hispanic populations. Few studies have examined the specific associations between injecting transition risk among non-injecting heroin using (NIU) populations and mental health conditions. This study hypothesizes that injecting transition risk will be strongly associated with depression symptomatology controlling for age and gender among Mexican American NIUs. METHODS: Street-recruited NIUs

Families' experiences of caring for technology-dependent children: a temporal perspective.

In the present study, families' experiences of caring for a technology-dependent child were examined from a temporal perspective. This involved exploring the multiple 'technological', 'social' and 'natural' rhythms and routines around which the families' lives were variously structured. A purposive sample of 36 families with technology-dependent children who used one or more medical devices on a daily basis was recruited. Devices included feeding pumps, suction machines, dialysis machines and ventilators. Using mainly qualitative methods, children, parents and siblings were interviewed to esta

The number of homeless people in Tokyo is estimated to be 3,200-3,300. While studies on the health status of homeless people, including illn … ing showed higher white blood cell counts and platelet counts. It was suggested that changes in the social structures were largely influential in causing life, and that access to health care was limited because of financial and social barriers. Further studies with more samples, survey of social volunteers involved in care of homeless and qualitative data would be …

An 8-year study of multiple influences on drug use and drug use consequences.

Multiple long-term influences on young adult drug use and abuse were tested within an interactionist perspective using latent-variable causal models. Intrapersonal influences included early drug use and social conformity. Proximal interpersonal influences were captured by perceived peer drug use, perceived adult drug use, and family disruption. More distal influences included perceptions of community approval or disapproval for drug use. Outcome measures included not only use of drugs but also disruptive drug use (getting high at work or school) and self-admitted problems with drugs. Data were

The digital determinants of health: a new era for global public health.

Digital transformations exert increasing influence over the lives of the global population, shaping opportunities and generating harms for health and wellbeing across the spectrum of digital access and engagement. The scale of influence of digital transformations on human and planetary health marks the urgency of attention to the digital determinants of health (DDoH). In this Series paper, we describe a prevailing digital sociotechnological order (DSTO) as the structural source of the DDoH. The DSTO is composed of a set of dominant assumptions that motivate digital practices operating through

Clinical Scoring Systems for the Assessment of Continence Following Anorectal Malformation Repair: A Comprehensive Review.

Despite advancements in surgical techniques and improved survival rates for anorectal malformation (ARM) patients, the lack of a standardized way for assessing bowel function and quality of life remains a challenge. Variability in scoring outcomes exists between systems due to inconsistencies in criteria and precise definitions, such as soiling, constipation, and continence. While older tools lack proper validation, newer scales, including the Rintala and Baylor Continence Scale (BCS), offer more structured assessment. There is also a growing acceptance of the need to incorporate quality of li

[Rehabilitation with cochlear implants in children with malformations of the inner ear].

Cochlear implants (CIs) are the treatment of choice for hearing rehabilitation in children with congenital or acquired profound hearing loss or deafness in order to ensure appropriate speech development and avoid social deprivation. However, in the case of a radiologically detectable malformation of the inner ear structures and potentially associated hypo- or aplasia of the vestibulocochlear nerve, application of a CI is either not possible, or the functional outcome may be of limited predictability. In addition, the risk of surgical complications is also increased in these patients. Counselin

[Centralized biobanks: a basis for medical research].

Biobanks are the basis for a substantial part of biomedical research. The development, establishment and operation of biobanks are connected to a broad range of aspects, mainly concerning the preparation, storage, usage and dissemination of samples and associated data, in addition to the social and public involvement of these processes. These complex requirements can often only be managed in large centralized biobanks. In recent years, centralized clinical biobanks have been established in several university clinics in Germany. Similar activities take place in other European countries and worl

A first seizure is a critical life time event with severe consequences. A very thorough work-up is needed to find out the cause of the seizure and to number the risk of recurrence. Reasons for an anticonvulsive therapy are a pathologic EEG, a pathologic neurologic examination, the proof of a structural lesion, focal seizure onset or seizure onset while sleeping or classification as an epilepsy syndrome with high recurrence risk like juvenile myoclonic epilepsy or juvenile absence epilepsy. Psychological and social aspects like the patients or relatives fear of a further seizure, the risk of in
