Idiopathic (Bell's) facial palsy is a self-limiting, non-life threatening, and spontaneously remitting disorder. A recently developed radioimmunoassay for direct measurement of 18-hydroxycortisol (18-OH-F) in plasma and urine has been used to study the physiology of this newly described steroid in normal subjects. Plasma levels of 18-OH-F show a circadian variation similar to that of cortisol and are increased and suppressed by administration of ACTH and dexamethasone respectively. Eight asthmatics with respiratory intolerance to NSAIDs and two subjects (one asthmatic, one healthy) only sensitive (asthma) to pyrazolone drugs were challenged under single-blind conditions with a new NSAID, carprofen. No adverse effects were observed in patients sensitive to pyrazolones. The plasma concentrations of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) in 14 women administered the progestagen for threatened abortion during the first 6 weeks of pregnancy were measured by specific radioimmunoassay. Treatment (52 nmol orally every 6 h) was continued to 18 weeks of gestation. The mean plasma concentration of MPA rose rapidly during day 1 of treatment to 14.1 +/- 1.84 nmol/l. In Fukuoka, Japan, infiltrating duct carcinoma predominated among 213 breast cancer cases, age 45 to 74. Lobular and medullary carcinomas were infrequent. About thirty three percent of the women had marked productive fibrosis, based on the UICC code type. Both rough margin and productive fibrosis of the cancer increased with age of the patients. Gas gangrene is a rare infectious disease syndrome complicating medico-surgical procedures. We describe a case of gas gangrene secondary to intra-articular steroid injection. Clostridia species and Escherichia coli were the etiologic organisms in this case. The presence of underlying diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hepatic insufficiency, and metabolic acidosis could have contributed to the fatal outcome of this patient. In four patients with inactive ulcerative proctocolitis, oral administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs appeared to precipitate relapse. These observations suggest that inhibitors of prostaglandin synthesis should be used with care in patients with this disease, and are consistent with the hypothesis that prostaglandins may have a protective role in the lower as well as the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Steroid sulfatase activities are significantly higher in placentas obtained after the birth of girls than after the birth of boys, and also in female fibroblasts compared to male strains. This constitutes biochemical evidence for the non-inactivation of the X-linked sulfatase locus. No hydrolytic activity is found in the fibroblasts of ichthyotic boys. Heterozygosity is demonstrated in the fibroblasts of the four mothers studied, as they have steroid sulfatase activity of less or equivalent to the normal male value.

Patients with recessive X-linked ichthyosis, one of the inherited types of excessive stratum corneum cohesion, have deficient steroid sulfatase in fibroblasts grown from their dermis.
