Post-traumatic stress symptoms in COVID-19 survivors: a self-report and brain imaging follow-up study.

Previous coronavirus pandemics were associated elevated post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), but the self-report and neurological basis of PTSS in patients who survived coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are largely unknown. We conducted a two-session study to record PTSS in the COVID-19 survivors discharged from hospitals for a short (i.e., about 3 months, Session 1) to a medium period (i.e., about 6 months, Session 2), as well as brain imaging data in Session 2. The control groups were non-COVID-19 locals. Session 1 was completed for 126 COVID-19 survivors and 126 controls. Session 2 was

The association between blast exposure and transdiagnostic health symptoms on systemic inflammation.

Chronic elevation of systemic inflammation is observed in a wide range of disorders including PTSD, depression, and traumatic brain injury. Although previous work has demonstrated a link between inflammation and various diagnoses separately, few studies have examined transdiagnostic symptoms and inflammation within the same model. The objective of this study was to examine relationships between psychiatric and health variables and systemic inflammation and to determine whether mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and/or exposure to blast munitions moderate these relationships. Confirmatory facto

Effectiveness and acceptability of brief psychoeducational interventions after potentially traumatic events: A systematic review.

Background: Experiencing a potentially traumatic event can put individuals at risk for both short-term and long-term mental health problems. While many psychological interventions exist for those who have experienced potentially traumatic events, there remains controversy about the best ways to support them. Objective: This review explores the effect of brief psychoeducational interventions after potentially traumatic experiences on adult recipients' mental health, attitudes towards mental health, and trauma-related knowledge, as well as the perceived acceptability of psychoeducation. Methods:

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy brain imaging predicts symptom severity in youth exposed to traumatic stress.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive neuroimaging technique with the potential to enable the assessment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) brain biomarkers in an affordable and portable manner. Consistent with biological models of PTSD, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and fNIRS studies of adults with trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms suggest increased activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and ventrolateral PFC (vlPFC) in response to negative emotion stimuli. We tested this theory with fNIRS assessment among youth exposed to trauma

The Tonic Immobility Scale in adolescent and young adult rape victims: Support for three-factor model.

OBJECTIVE: A substantial number of sexual assault victims report experiencing some form of peritraumatic tonic immobility (TI). A self-report questionnaire that is widely used to assess TI retrospectively is the Tonic Immobility Scale (TIS). This study explored the factor structure of the TIS in a clinical sample of adolescent and young adults. METHOD: The sample comprised 131 female rape victims, aged 13-25, who were referred for specialized trauma-focused treatment. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed. RESULTS: The EFA showed support for a three-factor model, with factors TI

The trajectory of PTSD among youth in foster care: A survival analysis examining maltreatment experiences prior to entry into care.

BACKGROUND: Youth in foster care are more likely than non-foster care youth to experience posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While research has identified maltreatment as a risk factor for PTSD, this research remains limited because it tends to only (a) examine a single type or dimension of maltreatment and ignore the polyvictimization and heterogeneity in exposure, and (b) study this relation across a short period time or retrospectively at the end of care. OBJECTIVE: The current study used survival analysis to simultaneously examine the influence of maltreatment characteristics on the ri

Pregnancy and posttraumatic stress disorder: associations with infant outcomes and prenatal care utilization.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects 3.6-9.7% of women, and has been associated with adverse outcomes in pregnancy; however, associations with prenatal care (PNC) utilization are not clear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate associations of PTSD in pregnancy with PNC utilization and adverse infant outcomes in an active-duty military population (a population with universal health insurance). METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of pregnant active-duty service members in Department of Defense Birth and Infant Health Research program data from 2007 to 2014. Administrative medi

The Role of Traumatic Experiences and Posttraumatic Stress on Social Anxiety in a Youth Sample in Lithuania.

Emerging adulthood is a developmental stage with an increased vulnerability to mental disorders. Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is highly prevalent anxiety disorder especially among adolescents and young adults. Furthermore, SAD is highly comorbid with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of SAD, life-time traumatic experiences and PTSD among Lithuanian young adults studying at the Universities. We also aimed to search for associations between social anxiety, traumatic experiences, and posttraumatic stress in our sample. In total 590 young a

'I don't want to think about it': Psychosocial experiences of road traffic accident survivors in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Road traffic injuries are among the top ten traumatic events that affect the psychosocial wellbeing and quality of life of survivors. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of road traffic accident survivors in Ghana, a low-middle-income country in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: The study adopted an interpretive qualitative research design. Thirteen (13) participants were purposively selected from the Accident Centre of the largest public teaching hospital in Ghana. Data collection employed in-depth face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured guide. Data analysis

Preventing risk for posttraumatic stress following childbirth: Visual biofeedback during childbirth increases maternal connectedness to her newborn thereby preventing risk for posttraumatic stress following childbirth.

OBJECTIVE: Mounting evidence indicates the detrimental impact of posttraumatic stress following childbirth (PTS-FC). Nevertheless, research on preventive strategies is scarce. We recently reported that ultrasound visual biofeedback during second stage of labor was associated with immediate beneficial medical outcomes (increased pushing efficacy, decreased perineal tearing), as well as greater feelings of maternal connectedness toward her newborn immediately postlabor. The current study assessed the potential longer-term psychological benefits of these outcomes in buffering risk for PTS-FC. The

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Childhood Traumatic Loss: A Secondary Analysis of Symptom Severity and Treatment Outcome.

Loss is a commonly experienced traumatic event among children. Although the experience of loss can potentially lead to posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), little is known about PTSS levels after traumatic loss versus other traumatic events. We investigated data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) on trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) versus a waitlist condition for children with PTSS. In a secondary analysis, we compared participants who reported traumatic loss as their index event (n = 23) to those who reported the two most frequently reported index events in the RCT:

Problem recognition and treatment beliefs relate to mental health utilization among veteran primary care patients.

Mental health concerns are prevalent among primary care patients, but many do not utilize services for these conditions. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment of barriers and facilitators to mental health care utilization among veteran primary care patients with common mental health concerns. We hypothesized that beliefs and knowledge about mental illness and mental health care would be more strongly associated with recent mental health care utilization than stigma, help-seeking behaviors, or logistical barriers. Veterans (n = 116) enrolled in primary care with current symptoms

Associations Between Trauma-Related Rumination and Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress and Depression in Treatment-Seeking Female Veterans.

Trauma-related rumination is a cognitive style characterized by repetitive negative thinking about the causes, consequences, and implications of a traumatic experience. Frequent trauma-related rumination has been linked to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression in civilian samples but has yet to be examined among military veterans. This study extended previous research by examining trauma-related rumination in female veterans who presented to a Veterans Affairs women's trauma recovery clinic (N = 91). The study had two main aims: (a) to examine associations between trauma-related

Posttraumatic stress symptom courses in U.S. military veterans: A seven-year, nationally representative, prospective cohort study.

The current study examined the nature and correlates of seven-year posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom courses in a nationally representative, prospective cohort of U.S. military veterans. Data were analyzed from 2,307 trauma-exposed veterans who completed at least one follow-up assessment over a 7-year period, a subsample of n = 3,157 veterans who participated in the first wave of the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study. Latent growth mixture modeling (LGMM) was used to identify PTSD symptom courses over four survey waves conducted in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2018. Sociodem

Comparative efficacy of imagery rehearsal therapy and prazosin in the treatment of trauma-related nightmares in adults: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Pharmacological treatment with prazosin and psychological treatment with imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) are the two main treatments of posttraumatic nightmares. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine task force recently listed IRT as the recommended treatment for trauma-related nightmares and changed the recommendation of prazosin to 'may be used'. This new recommendation was based on a single prazosin trial and not on a meta-analytic review of all available trials. The current meta-analysis aims to fill this gap in the literature. Eight studies on IRT and seven studies on prazosin (N = 1.078

Out of sight out of mind: an examination of mental health problems in UK military reservists and veterans.

BACKGROUND: Reservists often have different experiences to regular military personnel which may impact their mental health. AIMS: To investigate the incidence of mental health problems in both active and veteran reservists and determine how this compares to regular service personnel and ex-regular veterans. METHOD: Five studies which included reservist and/or veteran participants, a validated assessment of mental health problems, and provided primary data were included in the synthesis. Common mental health disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and alcohol use disorder were examined. RE

The Effects of Terrorist Attacks on Symptom Clusters of PTSD: a Comparison with Victims of Other Traumatic Events.

In the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) literature, no study assessed differences in symptom clusters among victims of terrorist attacks (TA) as compared with victims of other traumatic events. Due to the intentional nature of the harm infliction, TA may be expected to produce more severe symptoms, particularly avoidance, since this cluster was found to be a severity marker and a maintenance factor of the disorder. As several patients delay treatment-seeking, duration of untreated illness (DUI) is another problem potentially influencing PTSD severity. The current study explored difference

Child and family traumatic stress intervention (CFTSI) reduces parental posttraumatic stress symptoms: A multi-site meta-analysis (MSMA).

BACKGROUND: Following traumatization, caregiver support is a crucial factor contributing to children's successful management of posttraumatic reactions and their recovery. Caregivers who have been traumatically impacted themselves, however, may be compromised in this posttraumatic caregiving role. Although there are a number of evidence-based child trauma treatments that are effective in reducing children's trauma symptoms, the impact of child treatment on participating caregiver's posttraumatic symptoms (PTS) has received less attention. OBJECTIVE: Explore PTS reduction caregivers experience

Direct and indirect relationships among posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, hostility, anger, and verbal and physical aggression in returning veterans.

Hostility, anger, and aggression are conceptually related but unique constructs found to occur more often among veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than among civilians or veterans without PTSD. However, the pathways between PTSD, depression, hostility, anger, and aggression have not been comprehensively characterized. Therefore, drawing on a sample of returning Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom combat veterans ( N = 175; 95% male; mean age 30 years), this study sought to examine the direct and indirect relationships among PTSD, depression, hostility, anger, and
