The Psychosocial Impacts of Intimate Partner Violence against Women in LMIC Contexts: Toward a Holistic Approach.

Work on the mental health impacts of intimate partner violence in low-and middle-income countries has focused primarily on clinical disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance abuse. This paper analyzes how non-clinical, psychosocial impacts from everyday stressors, particularly economic hardships and concern over one's children, cause extensive suffering and damage women survivors' well-being, influencing the development and expression of clinical disorders. Using a social ecological framework, the paper analyzes how psychosocial impacts arise at multiple level

Religious trauma and moral injury from LGBTQA+ conversion practices.

Religion-based LGBTQA + conversion practices frame all people as potential heterosexuals whose gender aligns with their birth sex (in a cisgender binary model of male and female sexes). Deviation from this heterosexual cisgender social identity model is cast as curable 'sexual brokenness'. However, research shows conversion practices are harmful, and particularly associated with increased experiences of abuse, mental health diagnoses, and suicidality. This paper explores their contribution to the particular harms of moral injury and religious trauma, drawing firstly on the foundational moral i

How Will I Be Perceived: The Role of Trauma-Related Shame in the Relationship Between Psychological Distress and Expectations of Disclosure Among Survivors of Sexual Victimization.

Sexual assault is a serious physical and psychological concern worldwide. Various negative psychological outcomes are associated with survivor well-being, including depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive symptoms, and trauma-related shame. Opportunities for emotional expression and processing have been shown to be beneficial among survivors of trauma; however, survivors of sexual victimization may be reticent to disclose details of their traumatic experience, particularly to formal sources of support. Trauma-related shame (e.g., negative evaluations of self, feelings of w

Attachment security as an outcome and predictor of response to trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy among maltreated children with posttraumatic stress: A pilot study.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a frontline intervention for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among maltreated children. Research suggests that active caregiver participation predicts positive treatment outcomes, but these studies are often based on the perception of the caregiver. Youth perceptions of the caregiver as a source of support who might help confront distressing memories (i.e., attachment security) and how they relate to TF-CBT treatment are unexplored. This paper uses data from a small randomized controlled feasibility trial of TF-CBT to conduc

The ins and outs of posttraumatic growth in children and adolescents: A systematic review of factors that matter.

Posttraumatic growth (PTG) refers to a positive psychological change that occurs following a seismic and highly challenging life circumstance. An individual who experiences PTG reports posttrauma development that surpasses their baseline level of pretrauma function in various domains. The present systematic review of the current literature aimed to explore factors related to the development of PTG in children and adolescents exposed to trauma. Included studies investigated a range of factors that impact PTG development in youth from five countries: the United States, Israel, China, Japan, and

Posttraumatic Growth and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms in People with HIV.

Receiving a diagnosis of HIV can be challenging. People with HIV (PWH) can experience high levels of distress, as well as some positive psychological changes associated with post-traumatic growth. However, the mechanisms which underlying the association of a highly stressful event (i.e., being diagnosed with HIV) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are under-explored, and this is the focus of the study. Cross-sectional survey data were provided by 77 PWH living in New Zealand. An analysis examined the roles of deliberate rumination and coping strategies as s

PTSD and PTG in French and American Firefighters: A Comparative Study.

Studies show that experiencing traumatic events can lead to positive psychological change, or posttraumatic growth (PTG). In the hope of promoting PTG, authors have been focusing on identifying the factors that may foster PTG. Despite these attempts, the literature shows inconsistencies, making it difficult to know which variables may be involved in the process of growth. Indeed, authors seem to disagree on the nature of the relationship between PTSD and PTG, time since the event, social support, intrusive rumination, and sociodemographics. Thus, this study aims to clarify these discrepancies,

Sex differences in the effect of subjective sleep on fear conditioning, extinction learning, and extinction recall in individuals with a range of PTSD symptom severity.

Sleep has been found to play a key role in fear conditioning, extinction learning and extinction recall, and sleep disturbances are linked to many mental disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous studies examining associations between sleep and fear or extinction processes primarily focused on objectively measured sleep architecture. Little research has so far focused on subjective sleep measures and particularly in clinical populations, which often experience subjectively poor sleep, including PTSD. Here we investigated whether subjective sleep disturbance, sleep ons

Drug-drug interactions between psychiatric medications and MDMA or psilocybin: a systematic review.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVES: ± 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and psilocybin are currently moving through the US Food and Drug Administration's phased drug development process for psychiatric treatment indications: posttraumatic stress disorder and depression, respectively. The current standard of care for these disorders involves treatment with psychiatric medications (e.g., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), so it will be important to understand drug-drug interactions between MDMA or psilocybin and psychiatric medications. METHODS: In accordance with Preferred Reporting Items fo

A Scoping Review and Proposed Framework for Coping in Youth With a History of Psychological Trauma and Chronic Pain.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological trauma (e.g., abuse, neglect) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) commonly occur in pediatric pain populations and may be related to various maladaptive coping strategies, which may in turn affect short- and long-term pain-related outcomes in youth. Accordingly, the current scoping review and conceptual framework seeks to identify important gaps in the field's current understanding of how coping impacts outcomes in youth who have experienced trauma/PTSS and pediatric chronic pain and explores avenues for future investigation. METHODS: A scoping review of the lite

The influence of social support on posttraumatic stress symptoms among children and adolescents: a scoping review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several risk and protective factors play a role in the development of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in children and youth. The evidence for social support (SS) as a protective factor is rising; however, a review of the evidence is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review and meta-analysis aims to map out and synthesize the present research on the influence of social support on PTSS in children and adolescents. METHOD: The literature searched through PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, PsycInfo, and CINAHL identified 3629 abstracts. Ninety articles published from 1999 to 2020 were sele

The prevalence of acute stress disorder after acute myocardial infarction and its psychosocial risk factors among young and middle-aged patients.

Young and middle-aged people are vulnerable to developing acute stress disorder (ASD) following acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This study aims to explore the factors that contribute to ASD in young and middle-aged AMI patients. 190 AMI patients aged 18 to 60 years were enrolled in this study. We assessed the association between ASD and demographic data, adult attachment, and social support. This study examined a total of 190 young and middle-aged people. Among them, 65 participants were diagnosed with ASD, representing a 34.21% positive rate. Multivariate stepwise regression showed that ad

Posttraumatic stress disorder, cardiovascular disease outcomes and the modifying role of socioeconomic status.

INTRODUCTION: Substantial evidence indicates that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and differential PTSD-CVD association by socioeconomic status had been suggested. However, there are inadequate evidence on differential association. This study investigated sociodemographic heterogeneity in the association between PTSD and CVD. METHODS: A total of 53,749 patients diagnosed with PTSD in 2004-2018 were recruited from Korean National Health Insurance Database. Date of first diagnosis of PTSD was set as an index date.

Undocumented PTSD among African American clients with serious mental illness in a statewide mental health system.

OBJECTIVES: African Americans are at increased risk for trauma exposure and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) relative to other racial groups. Among African Americans with Serious Mental Illness (SMI), PTSD is frequently underdiagnosed and untreated. The primary objective of this study was to investigate trauma exposure, PTSD symptom severity, and the rate of undocumented PTSD in medical records among African Americans diagnosed with SMI. METHODS: Screening for trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms was implemented among 404 clients receiving community mental health services.

COVID-19 induced PTSD: Stressors for trauma and acute care surgeons.

BACKGROUND: At the peak of the pandemic, acute care surgeons at many hospitals were reassigned to treat COVID-19 patients. However, the effect of the pandemic on this population who are well versed in stressful practice has not been fully explored. METHODS: A web-based survey was distributed to the members of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST). PTSD and the personal and professional impact of the pandemic were assessed. A positive screen was defined as a severity score of ≥14 or a symptomatic response to at least 5 of the 6 questions on the screen. RESULTS: A total of 3

An Examination of the Synergy of Age and PTSD on Narrative Coherence in Child Sexual Abuse Testimony.

In a criminal proceeding, a witness is considered as reliable if he/she can recall in narrative form the events, chronologically ordered, with salient contextual (place and time) details, and essential evaluations for the definition of meanings. This study aimed to confirm the effects of age and PTSD on narrative coherence and to investigate the moderating role of age on the association between PTSD and narrative coherence. Narrative coherence was analyzed in 92 allegations of children (M = 10.3; range: 4-17), who were victims of sexual abuse. Thirty-five children presented the symptoms for a

Relationship between Socio-Demographic Factors and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Cross Sectional Study among Civilian Participants' Hostilities in Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: Even though there is an extensive body of literature on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in individuals who have experienced armed conflict, there are still many grey areas, especially in relation to civilian participants in hostilities. This article evaluates how socio-demographic factors and the interactions between them have influenced PTSD among civilians involved in the recent war in Ukraine. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included a convenience sample of 314 adults, 74 women, and 235 men. The mean age was 34.08 years. We used the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

[OBSTETRIC VIOLENCE - SINCE WHEN AND WHERE TO: IMPLICATIONS AND PREVENTIVE STRATEGIES].

Obstetric violence has recently gained wide recognition and is defined as inappropriate or disrespectful treatment given by medical staff to women throughout the antepartum period, delivery and postpartum. It includes verbal violence, denial of patient autonomy, the practice of unconsented or unnecessary medical procedures, discrimination based on race or ethnic background, and physical violence. The source of obstetric violence has been vastly studied by psycho-sociologists who have conceptualized it as stemming back to ancient gender role theories. In the medical literature, obstetric violen
