Nonsuppurative encephalitis was experimentally induced in 3-week-old piglets by a single intravenous inoculation of either of two strains (IB 2001 or AS-6) of Japanese encephalitis flavivirus (JEV) isolated from field pigs. The lesions, which consisted of neuronal necrosis, neuronophagia, glial nodules, and perivas-cular cuffing, were distributed in the cerebrum, midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata, and cerebellum, particularly in the gray matter of the frontal and temporal lobes and thalamus. Composition of glycoconjugates was examined in small intestines naturally infected with Isospora suis in preweaned pigs by use of 21 biotinylated-labeled lectins with avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method. As compared with control pig, staining of 18 lectins altered in jejunal villus brush border and goblet cells of pigs naturally infected with I. suis. These results indicate that I. suis infection alters carbohydrate residues on the jejunal intestines.

Platyhelminths, like many other organisms, are capable of producing mineral concretions. In cestodes these are referred to as calcareous corpuscles. Studies on these concretions in different cestodes both in vivo and in vitro have resulted in a number of hypotheses on their origin, formation, and structure. Experiments were conducted to study the possible influence of fasting on Ascaris suum and Oesophagostomum spp. In growing pigs. Forty young crossbred pigs naturally infected with A. suum and Oesophagostomum spp. were used. A technique for surgical ablation of the cranial portion of the preputial cavity including the preputial diverticulum in pigs is described. The technique was performed on a 5-month-old 83.2-kg (183-lb) Hampshire barrow that had ulceration and fibrosis of the preputial cavity secondary to chronic preputial diverticulitis. The pig recovered without difficulties and was able to urinate normally after surgery.

A serological survey for leptospiral antibodies was carried out on 5 041 abattoir pigs from different regions in South Africa. Antibodies to at least one serovar were detected in 22,2% of the animals. The serovars showing the highest prevalence were: icterohaemorrhagiae (12,6%), hardjo (12,1%) and bratislava (7,5%). The serum dilution level at which 90% of the sera reacted was 1/80 or 1,160.

In Peru pork supplied through regulated slaughterhouses is primarily restricted to the large cities on the coast. Approximately 65% of the pork consumed in the country is obtained through informal channels that are not inspected or supervised. The comparative pathogenicity study of two Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona strains isolated from pig herds of different epizootiological status is reported. Using monoclonal antibodies (Mabs), the isolates were identified as Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona. Rhipicephalus simus was, for the first time, experimentally proven to be a transovarial vector of Babesia trautmanni of domestic pigs. Five aborted fetuses from a mature sixth-parity sow with severe greasy pig disease as a gilt, were submitted for diagnostic evaluation. Necropsy of the fetuses revealed serogelatinous edema in the SC connective tissue of the ventral abdominal region (especially around the umbilicus), exaggerated amounts of serohemorrhagic fluid in the abdominal, pleural, and pericardial cavities, and hemorrhagic kidneys, with diminished consistency.
