Characteristics of visual seeking and evoked potentials in the extrastriate areas of the cortex in humans.

Studies in 11 young, healthy subjects addressed the characteristics of visual seeking (time taken, errors) on changes in the parameters of the target element to be sought (shape, color, and location) in an environment containing heterogeneous white distractors. Evoked potentials (EP) were recorded in six cortical leads (P3, P4, T3, T4, T5, T6) and the late endogenous components of EP were studied, i.e., the N2 and P3 components (standard terminology), as these components are known to change when the type of search changes, in the zone of so-called late selection. When the search difficulty inc

Dissociating the performance of cortical and subcortical patients on phonemic tasks.

To assess cortical and subcortical contributions to phonemic processing, patients with left frontal, temporal-parietal, or cerebellar lesions as well as those with Parkinson's disease were tested on phonemic identification and production tasks. In Experiment 1, patients and controls were asked to identify syllables on both a voicing and place of articulation continuum. Subcortical patients were relatively unimpaired at this task whereas cortical patients were less accurate at identifying the endpoints of both continua and exhibited little evidence of categorical perception. For Experiment 2, c

Brain glucose metabolism in Rett Syndrome.

Rett syndrome is a progressive neurologic disorder affecting girls in early childhood with loss of achieved psychomotor abilities and mental retardation. Six sedated female patients (4 to 15 years of age) with a diagnosis of Rett syndrome were studied with [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and underwent positron emission tomography scanning of the brain. Relative tracer concentrations between different areas of the brain were assessed, and results were compared with 18 age-matched control subjects. Patients were divided into two age groups: 3 to 8 years of age and 9 to 15 years of age. A relativ

Detection by action: neuropsychological evidence for action-defined templates in search.

How do we detect a target in a cluttered environment? Here we present neuropsychological evidence that detection can be based on the action afforded by a target. A patient showing symptoms of unilateral neglect following damage to the right fronto-temporal-parietal region was slow and sometimes unable to find targets when they were defined by their name or even by a salient visual property (such as their color). In contrast, he was relatively efficient at finding a target defined by the action it afforded. Two other patients with neglect showed an opposite pattern; they were better at finding

Mapping of architectonic subdivisions in the macaque monkey, with emphasis on parieto-occipital cortex.

The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) of the macaque monkey contains numerous areas associated with different aspects of cortical function, including motor control as well as visual, somatosensory, vestibular, and possibly auditory processing. This study focuses largely on the architectonic organization of areas within and near the IPS, but also examines remaining portions of the hemisphere with which the IPS is interconnected. We charted the location of up to 72 architectonically distinct areas plus numerous architectonic zones in individuals over a region covering most of the cortical hemisphere. I

The selectivity and timing of motion processing in human temporo-parieto-occipital and occipital cortex: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

An extrastriate visual area near the human temporo parieto occipital junction (TPO) may selectively mediate motion processing, while contributing little to the perception of color or form. This TPO area may be the human analogue of the monkey middle temporal (MT or V5) and medial superior temporal (MST) extrastriate visual areas. The selectivity of the effect of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on motion processing was unknown, as was the timecourse of occipital to TPO motion processing. In the first experiment, unilateral TMS was delivered over TPO 50-250 ms after the onset of a random

Characterizing stimulus-response functions using nonlinear regressors in parametric fMRI experiments.

Parametric study designs proved very useful in characterizing the relationship between experimental parameters (e.g., word presentation rate) and regional cerebral blood flow in positron emission tomography studies. In a previous paper we presented a method that fits nonlinear functions of stimulus or task parameters to hemodynamic responses, using second-order polynomial expansions. Here we expand this approach to model nonlinear relationships between BOLD responses and experimental parameters, using fMRI. We present a framework that allows this technique to be implemented in the context of t

Attention to one or two features in left or right visual field: a positron emission tomography study.

In human vision, two features of the same object can be identified concurrently without loss of accuracy. Performance declines, however, when the features belong to different objects in opposite visual fields. We hypothesized that different positron emission tomography activation patterns would reflect these behavioral results. We first delineated an attention network for single discriminations in left or right visual field and then compared this with the activation pattern when subjects divided attention over two features of a single object or over two objects in opposite hemifields. When sub

Brain morphometry patterns in the presence of Alzheimer's disease and/or LATE neuropathologic changes.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease neuropathologic change (ADNC) and limbic-predominant age-related transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43) encephalopathy neuropathologic change (LATENC) are common in older adults, yet differences in brain morphometry patterns when one or both pathologies are present remain unclear. METHODS: We used deformation-based morphometry on ex-vivo MRI from 912 community-based older adults to compare groups with or without ADNC and/or LATENC. RESULTS: AD+LATE- and AD-LATE+ groups showed less tissue in the medial temporal lobe than AD-LATE-. The AD+LAT…

Sinus node dysfunction preceding herpes simplex encephalitis: A case report.

UNLABELLED: Herpes simplex virus encephalitis can sometimes lead to sinus node dysfunction. A 72-year-old Japanese man was admitted with faintness, and normal head computed tomography (CT) findings were observed. After hospitalization, the patient was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome and experienced an Adams-Stokes attack. As a result, a permanent pacemaker was implanted. Subsequently, the patient began experiencing seizures intermittently. A repeat head CT scan revealed low-density areas in the left temporal lobe and insular cortex, and polymerase chain reaction revealed herpes simplex DNA …
