Effectiveness of Vocal Therapy for the Elderly When Applying Conventional and Intensive Approaches: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to verify the effects of the method Vocal Therapy for the Elderly and the differences in treatment efficacy when it was administered intensively or in the conventional way. METHODS: Twenty-seven elderly individuals were randomized into two groups and referred for 16 sessions of vocal therapy. The Intensive Group (IG) had therapy four times a week, whereas the Conventional Group had it twice a week. The effects of the therapy were assessed by auditory-perceptual analysis, the Voice-Related Quality of Life protocol, and visual-perceptive analysis of laryngo

On the role of ephrinA2 in auditory function.

Recent findings suggest that the manipulation of the EphA/ephrinA system can improve hearing threshold sensitivity in the auditory system (Yates et al., 2014). These results appear to open-up the possibility that pharmacological manipulation of this system could lead to the development of treatments to cure some types of hearing loss. As a first step towards this goal, we have performed a further series of auditory brainstem evoked potential recordings on ephrinA2 homozygous knockout mice and their wildtype littermates in order to replicate the previously reported findings. However, we found t

Cortical networks involved in visual awareness independent of visual attention.

It is now well established that visual attention, as measured with standard spatial attention tasks, and visual awareness, as measured by report, can be dissociated. It is possible to attend to a stimulus with no reported awareness of the stimulus. We used a behavioral paradigm in which people were aware of a stimulus in one condition and unaware of it in another condition, but the stimulus drew a similar amount of spatial attention in both conditions. The paradigm allowed us to test for brain regions active in association with awareness independent of level of attention. Participants performe

Pain perception following different neurosurgical procedures: a quantitative prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Pain following neurosurgery has never been given due attention. OBJECTIVE: This was a prospective study to assess pain following various neurosurgical procedures. METHODS: Patients underwent pain assessment on 11-point scale(0-10) for 24 hours following neurosurgery, and analyzed in relation to various factors. RESULTS: Among total 159 patients, 88(55%), 58(37%) and 13(8%) had undergone cranial, spinal and peripheral nerve procedures respectively. The mean pain score within 12 hours was 3.51(SD ± 2.53), which increased significantly during 13-24 hours to 5.06(SD ± 2.6)(P<0.001).

Predicting Subjective Affective Salience from Cortical Responses to Invisible Object Stimuli.

The affective value of a stimulus substantially influences its potency to gain access to awareness. Here, we sought to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying such affective salience in a combined behavioral and fMRI experiment. Healthy individuals with varying degrees of spider phobia were presented with pictures of spiders and flowers suppressed from view by continuous flash suppression. Applying multivoxel pattern analysis, we found that the average time that spider stimuli took relative to flowers to gain access to awareness in each participant could be decoded from fMRI signals evoked

Sound localization and word discrimination in reverberant environment in children with developmental dyslexia.

OBJECTIVE: Compare if localization of sounds and words discrimination in reverberant environment is different between children with dyslexia and controls. METHOD: We studied 30 children with dyslexia and 30 controls. Sound and word localization and discrimination was studied in five angles from left to right auditory fields (-90o, -45o, 0o, +45o, +90o), under reverberant and no-reverberant conditions; correct answers were compared. RESULTS: Spatial location of words in no-reverberant test was deficient in children with dyslexia at 0º and +90o. Spatial location for reverberant test was altere

Object-based attentional facilitation and inhibition are neuropsychologically dissociated.

Salient peripheral cues produce a transient shift of attention which is superseded by a sustained inhibitory effect. Cueing part of an object produces an inhibitory cueing effect (ICE) that spreads throughout the object. In dynamic scenes the ICE stays with objects as they move. We examined object-centred attentional facilitation and inhibition in a patient with visual form agnosia. There was no evidence of object-centred attentional facilitation. In contrast, object-centred ICE was observed in 3 out of 4 tasks. These inhibitory effects were strongest where cues to objecthood were highly salie

How disgust facilitates avoidance: an ERP study on attention modulation by threats.

This study investigated the attention modulation of disgust in comparison with anger in a dot-probe task. Results indicated a two-stage processing of attention modulation by threats. When participants viewed the cues that were represented by Chinese faces (i.e. the in-group condition), it was found at the early processing stage that an angry face elicited a larger occipital P1 component whereas a disgusted face elicited a smaller P1 for validly than for invalidly cued targets. However, the result pattern was reversed at the later processing stage: the P3 amplitudes were larger for valid disgus

Prolonged hemodynamic response during incidental facial emotion processing in inter-episode bipolar I disorder.

This fMRI study examined whether hemodynamic responses to affectively-salient stimuli were abnormally prolonged in remitted bipolar disorder, possibly representing a novel illness biomarker. A group of 18 DSM-IV bipolar I-diagnosed adults in remission and a demographically-matched control group performed an event-related fMRI gender-discrimination task in which face stimuli had task-irrelevant neutral, happy or angry expressions designed to elicit incidental emotional processing. Participants' brain activation was modeled using a "fully informed" SPM5 basis set. Mixed-model ANOVA tested for di

Disentangling the Role of Cortico-Basal Ganglia Loops in Top-Down and Bottom-Up Visual Attention: An Investigation of Attention Deficits in Parkinson Disease.

It is solidly established that top-down (goal-driven) and bottom-up (stimulus-driven) attention mechanisms depend on distributed cortical networks, including prefrontal and frontoparietal regions. On the other hand, it is less clear whether the BG also contribute to one or the other of these mechanisms, or to both. The current study was principally undertaken to clarify this issue. Parkinson disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder primarily affecting the BG, has proven to be an effective model for investigating the contribution of the BG to different brain functions; therefore, we set out t

The role of stimulus complexity, spectral overlap, and pitch for gap-detection thresholds in young and old listeners.

Thresholds for detecting a gap between two complex tones were determined for young listeners with normal hearing and old listeners with mild age-related hearing loss. The leading tonal marker was always a 20-ms, 250-Hz complex tone with energy at 250, 500, 750, and 1000 Hz. The lagging marker, also tonal, could differ from the leading marker with respect to fundamental frequency (f0), the presence versus absence of energy at f0, and the degree to which it overlapped spectrally with the leading marker. All stimuli were presented with steeper (1 ms) and less steep (4 ms) envelope rise and fall t

An incongruent reality: the N400 in relation to psychosis and recovery.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments and delusions are hallmarks of schizophrenia, and are thought to be due in part to abnormalities in semantic priming. The N400, a neural measure of semantic processing, is found to be reduced in schizophrenia. However, it is unclear if individuals with other psychoses (e.g., mood disorders or substance abuse with psychotic features) also show this impairment, and whether N400 reduction relates to real-world functioning and recovery. METHODS: Eighty-nine individuals from the Suffolk County Mental Health Project, a longitudinal study of first-admission psychosi

Pervasive competition between threat and reward in the brain.

In the current functional MRI study, we investigated interactions between reward and threat processing. Visual cues at the start of each trial informed participants about the chance of winning monetary reward and/or receiving a mild aversive shock. We tested two competing hypothesis: according to the 'salience hypothesis', in the condition involving both reward and threat, enhanced activation would be observed because of increased salience; according to the 'competition hypothesis', the processing of reward and threat would trade-off against each other, leading to reduced activation. Analysis

Short-term psychological impact of the BRCA1/2 test result in women with breast cancer according to their perceived probability of genetic predisposition to cancer.

BACKGROUND: The effect of BRCA1/2 gene test result on anxiety, depression, cancer-related thought intrusion or avoidance and perceived control over cancer risk was assessed in breast cancer (BC) patients, according to their perceived probability of genetic predisposition to cancer. METHODS: Two hundred and forty-three (89% response rate) women with BC completed questionnaires after an initial genetic counselling visit (T1), of which 180 (66%) completed questionnaires again after receiving the BRCA1/2 results (T2). The discrepancy between women's perceived probability of cancer genetic predisp

Inner speech captures the perception of external speech.

Talking silently to ourselves occupies much of our mental lives, yet the mechanisms underlying this experience remain unclear. The following experiments provide behavioral evidence that the auditory content of inner speech is provided by corollary discharge. Corollary discharge is the motor system's prediction of the sensory consequences of its actions. This prediction can bias perception of other sensations, pushing percepts to match with prediction. The two experiments below show this bias induced by inner speech, demonstrating that inner speech causes external sounds to be heard as similar

Infant ERPs separate children at risk of dyslexia who become good readers from those who become poor readers.

Dyslexia is heritable and associated with phonological processing deficits that can be reflected in the event-related potentials (ERPs). Here, we recorded ERPs from 2-month-old infants at risk of dyslexia and from a control group to investigate whether their auditory system processes /bAk/ and /dAk/ changes differently. The speech sounds were presented in an oddball paradigm. The children were followed longitudinally and performed a word reading fluency test in second grade. The infant ERPs were subsequently analyzed according to high or low reading fluency in order to find a neurophysiologica

Issues in motorcycle sensory and cognitive conspicuity: the impact of motorcycle low-beam headlights and riding experience on drivers' decisions to turn across the path of a motorcycle.

BACKGROUND: Crashes involving a passenger car and a motorcycle, where the car is turning across the path of the motorcycle, are a major crash type of motorcycle riders. It has been proposed that the incidence of such crashes could be reduced through improvements in motorcycle conspicuity. Operation of low-beam headlights on motorcycles has been discussed as one approach for improving the "sensory conspicuity" of motorcycles during daylight hours, whilst previous experience as a rider may serve to heighten "cognitive conspicuity" through raised awareness of motorcyclists on our roads. METHOD:

Parallactic movement beats binocularity in the presence of external visual noise.

PURPOSE: Binocular vision provides a considerable advantage over monocular vision when stationary particles partly obstruct the view. Such situations occur in real life, e.g., when drivers are trying to identify objects through a windshield dotted with snowflakes. In the process of driving, any bumpiness of the road will bring about a parallactic movement of particles on the windshield with respect to the visual object. We investigated whether this parallactic movement diminishes the advantage of binocular over monocular vision. METHODS: Using computer graphics, we simulated a driving situati

Effects of sleep deprivation on central auditory processing.

BACKGROUND: Sleep deprivation is extremely common in contemporary society, and is considered to be a frequent cause of behavioral disorders, mood, alertness, and cognitive performance. Although the impacts of sleep deprivation have been studied extensively in various experimental paradigms, very few studies have addressed the impact of sleep deprivation on central auditory processing (CAP). Therefore, we examined the impact of sleep deprivation on CAP, for which there is sparse information. In the present study, thirty healthy adult volunteers (17 females and 13 males, aged 30.75±7.14 years) w

Acute stress alters auditory selective attention in humans independent of HPA: a study of evoked potentials.

BACKGROUND: Acute stress is a stereotypical, but multimodal response to a present or imminent challenge overcharging an organism. Among the different branches of this multimodal response, the consequences of glucocorticoid secretion have been extensively investigated, mostly in connection with long-term memory (LTM). However, stress responses comprise other endocrine signaling and altered neuronal activity wholly independent of pituitary regulation. To date, knowledge of the impact of such "paracorticoidal" stress responses on higher cognitive functions is scarce. We investigated the impact of
