Clinical risk factors as predictors of postmenopausal osteoporosis in general practice.

BACKGROUND: Case-finding strategies to identify women with high risk for osteoporotic fractures have recently been proposed, but little information about such an approach in general practice is known. AIM: To study the validity of the proposed case-finding strategy for osteoporosis. DESIGN OF STUDY: Survey using case-finding strategy. SETTING: Seven hundred and twelve women aged between 55 and 84 years, randomly selected from a general practice in The Netherlands. METHOD: Of the 712 randomly selected women, 449 women participated. Information was obtained from a questionnaire, direct quest

Gliding flight in Chrysopelea: turning a snake into a wing.

Although many cylindrical animals swim through water, flying snakes of the genus Chrysopelea are the only limbless animals that glide through air. Despite a lack of limbs, these snakes can actively launch by jumping, maintain a stable glide path without obvious control surfaces, maneuver, and safely land without injury. Jumping takeoffs employ vertically looped kinematics that seem to be different than any other behavior in limbless vertebrates, and their presence in a closely related genus suggests that gap-crossing may have been a behavioral precursor to the evolution of gliding in snakes. Ghrelin, not corticosterone, is associated with transitioning of phenotypic states in a migratory Galliform.

In both captive and free-living birds, the emergence of the migratory phenotype is signalled by rapid and marked increases in food intake and fuelling, as well as changes in amount of nocturnality or migratory restlessness. The metabolic hormone corticosterone and, as more recently suggested, the gut-derived hormone ghrelin have been suggested to play a role in mediating such phenomenal phenotypic flexibility given that they both regulate fuel metabolism and locomotion across vertebrate taxa. Here, using the Common quail (Coturnix coturnix) as our study species, we induced autumn migration fol

Responsiveness of routine diagnostic tests for vertebral osteomyelitis may be influenced by the infecting organism.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) becomes increasingly more prevalent as people age, and it is a condition seen frequently by referral center spine surgeons. It can take as long as 6 months for a proper diagnosis to be made. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is the most common isolated organism in up to 80% of the affected population. The clinical presentation of vertebral osteomyelitis is typically non specific (back pain), which can make timely diagnosis challenging. Fever is often absent. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), white blood cell c

Periprocedural morbidity and mortality associated with endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite experience and technological improvements, endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms still has inherent risks. We evaluated cerebral complications associated with this treatment. METHODS: From October 1998 to October 2002, 180 consecutive patients underwent 131 procedures for 118 ruptured aneurysms and 79 procedures for 72 unruptured aneurysms. We retrospectively reviewed their records and images to evaluate their morbidity and mortality. RESULTS: Thirty-seven (17.6%) procedure-related complications occurred: 27 and six with initial embolization of rupt

[Somite patterning and segregation of different somite lineages].

The somite is a transient embryonic mesodermal structure, found only in vertebrates. In amniotes, somites give rise to the dermis of the back, to the striated skeletal muscles of the trunk and limbs and to the vertebral column and ribs. Segregation of these different lineages is linked to the establishment of two somitic polarity axes, a dorso-ventral one and a medio-lateral one. While the establishment of the former relies essentially on extrinsic cues, that of the latter obeys to both intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms. Concerning the environmental cues regulating the establishment of both a

Per-Vertebra Prediction of Future Osteoporotic Fractures from Routine Computed Tomography Using a Two-Stage Machine Learning Framework.

Background and Objectives: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures affect approximately one in four postmenopausal women and carry substantial morbidity, yet established clinical tools such as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provide only patient-level risk and do not identify which specific vertebra is most likely to fail. Computed tomography (CT) acquired for unrelated indications is the most widely available three-dimensional substrate for opportunistic screening, but published machine learning models for vertebral fracture risk almost universally operate at the patient level. Interventions to prevent and treat corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis and prevent osteoporotic fractures in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Corticosteroid treatment is considered the 'gold standard' for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD); however, it is also known to induce osteoporosis and thus increase the risk of vertebral fragility fractures. Good practice in the care of those with DMD requires prevention of these adverse effects. Treatments to increase bone mineral density include bisphosphonates and vitamin D and calcium supplements, and in adolescents with pubertal delay, testosterone. Bone health management is an important part of lifelong care for patients with DMD. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interve

Gaze Control in Drosophila During Pursuit and Navigation.

Vision is essential for goal-directed locomotion, yet self-generated optic flow during movement through space blurs images, limiting high-acuity vision. One solution that mitigates this challenge for the visual system is aligning specialized regions of the eyes-acute zones or foveae-with optic flow minima, such as the focus of expansion during translation, while keeping periods of rotational optic flow as short as possible. Gaze stability thus arises from coordinated interactions between visual motion processing and precisely timed movements across the body. Although the specific motor program

Primary ewing sarcoma in the uterine cervix with multiple bone metastases.

A 45-year-old female (G1, P1) with HPV-52 infection and low-grade cervical cytology presented to our clinic with an asymptomatic cervical mass. She suffered amenorrhea for the past 3 years due to medication for thyroid cancer. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass sized 7.1 × 6.3 × 5.7 cm in the cervix with local invasion, and multiple lesions in the left ilium and femur. Histologically blue small round cells, positive for CD99 and FLI-1, obtained by cervical biopsy and the EWSR1 gene rearrangement detected by Fluorescence in situ hybridization confirmed the diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma. Narrower isotopic niche size in fish infected by the intestinal parasite Pomphorhynchus sp. compared to uninfected ones.

Examples of parasite-related effects on intermediate crustacean hosts are numerous but their ecological consequences on their vertebrate hosts are scarce. Here, we address the role of macroparasite infections on the trophic niche structure of definitive hosts and its potential physiological consequences using wild fish populations infected with an acantochephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus sp., a trophically transmitted intestinal worm. Infected and uninfected fish were sampled from six populations on the Marne River, France and the prevalence of intestinal parasites in the host populations range

An Unusual Case Report of a Toddler with Metastatic Neuroblastoma Mimicking Myasthenia Gravis.

UNLABELLED: Pediatric neuroblastoma is famously characterized by an abdominal mass in a toddler with "raccoon eyes," Horner syndrome, and/or opsoclonus myoclonus. However, rare cases may present with non-discrete symptoms and signs which create challenges for timely diagnosis. This case depicts a toddler with bulbar symptoms, including bilateral ptosis, dysphagia, drooling, head tilt and ataxia in a post-viral course mimicking other neurologic diagnoses, including myasthenia gravis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and spine uncovered a right adrenal mass along with heterogenous e

Exposure to diclofop-methyl induces immunotoxicity and behavioral abnormalities in zebrafish embryos.

Diclofop-methyl (DM) is widely used in agriculture and may lead to serious toxicity. However, a limited number of studies have been performed to evaluate the toxicity of DM in the immune and nervous systems of animals. Here, we utilized a good vertebrate model, zebrafish, to evaluate the toxicity of DM during the developmental process. Exposure of zebrafish embryos to 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 mg/l DM from 6 h post fertilization (hpf) to 72 hpf induced developmental abnormalities, such as shorter body lengths and yolk sac edemas. The number of immune cells in zebrafish larvae was significantly reduced,

A de novo variant in the human HIST1H4J gene causes a syndrome analogous to the HIST1H4C-associated neurodevelopmental disorder.

We report here a de novo missense variant in HIST1H4J resulting in a complex syndrome combining growth delay, microcephaly and intellectual disability. Trio whole exome sequencing (WES) revealed that the proband was heterozygous for a de novo c.274 A > G p.(K91E) variant in HIST1H4J, a gene not yet associated with human disease. The patient presented with profound intellectual disability, microcephaly, and dysmorphic facial features. Functional consequences of the identified de novo missense variant were evaluated in zebrafish embryos, where they affected general development, especially result

Fungicides: An Overlooked Pesticide Class?

Fungicides are indispensable to global food security and their use is forecasted to intensify. Fungicides can reach aquatic ecosystems and occur in surface water bodies in agricultural catchments throughout the entire growing season due to their frequent, prophylactic application. However, in comparison to herbicides and insecticides, the exposure to and effects of fungicides have received less attention. We provide an overview of the risk of fungicides to aquatic ecosystems covering fungicide exposure (i.e., environmental fate, exposure modeling, and mitigation measures) as well as direct and

Rapid Dwarfing of an Insular Mammal - The Feral Cattle of Amsterdam Island.

The island rule describes a graded trend in insular populations of vertebrates from gigantism in small species to dwarfism in large species. The dwarfing of large mammals on islands has been observed both in the present fauna and in the fossil record. Elephants, hippopotami, deer, and other species became dwarfed on islands scattered all over the world, from the Mediterranean Sea to Indonesia, from the Eastern to Western Pacific Ocean, from the Caribbean to Canary Islands. The most rapid and well documented cases of island dwarfing known thus far took place over thousands of years. Here, we de
