Neuropsychiatric factors in the illusion of visitors among geriatric patients: a case series.

The 'illusion of visitors' is a common phenomenon among geriatric patients presenting for psychiatric or neurologic evaluation and treatment. Although these illusory beliefs are etiologically diverse, patients may commonly have visual impairment and functional and/or structural disruption of frontal and right-hemisphere-mediated cognitive functioning. This article outlines eight cases of illusory beliefs among elderly patients, presenting psychiatric, neurologic, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological findings among these patients. Commonalities and differences among these cases are discussed, a

Broad-band visual capacities are not selectively impaired in Alzheimer's disease.

Histological examination of the optic nerves of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients has revealed a selective degeneration of large axon ganglion cells. This morphological abnormality raises the possibility of a selective impairment of broad-band channel visual function. To test this hypothesis, we administered visual psychophysical tests associated with either the color-opponent or the broad-band retinocortical channel to 14 AD patients and 29 elderly control subjects (ECS). In previous studies in monkeys, these tests had been sensitive to the effects of either parvocellular or magnocellular LGN

Relation between neonatal cranial ultrasound abnormalities and cerebral visual impairment in infancy.

A prospective follow-up study was conducted of a cohort of 65 at-risk neonates to assess the predictive value of neonatal cranial ultrasound abnormalities for cerebral visual impairment in infancy. Visual function was assessed using the acuity card procedure and behavioural visual responses were tested. Normal visual function was found in controls as well as in infants with small haemorrhages or mild leukomalacia. Infants with large haemorrhages performed poorly at 40 weeks postmenstrual age, but recovered to within the normal range in the first half year. In contrast, of the infants with exte

Quantification of congruence between the right and left visual fields.

In the past, congruence between the right and left visual fields could only be evaluated subjectively. This study presents a congruence index to assess the similarity of the two visual fields objectively and quantitatively based on probability calculations. In 18 patients with suprachiasmal lesions of the visual pathways (cerebrovascular accident or tumor), the index found a homonymous congruence in all cases (100%). Of 26 persons with pituitary adenoma, in 22 cases (85%) the index found heteronymous congruence. The validity of the method may be even higher, because all cases with atypical ind

Computer-assisted interpretation of visual fields in glaucoma.

Visual field abnormality is an important diagnostic sign in glaucoma. Therefore, the presence or absence of visual field loss most often strongly influences diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in glaucoma management. Interpretation of visual field results is often difficult, however. Physiological variability of perimetric sensitivity values contributes to these difficulties. It has been our aim to develop improved computer-assisted methods for the recognition of early glaucomatous field loss. Our approach has therefore been to design techniques that are highly sensitive to small but signific

Severe visual loss related to isolated peripapillary retinal and optic nerve head cytomegalovirus infection.

We examined ten patients from a consecutive series of 73 patients with either isolated cytomegalovirus papillitis or limited cytomegalovirus retinitis contiguous with the optic disk. Patients with peripheral retinitis and other areas of retinitis were excluded. All patients were treated with ganciclovir. Two distinct types of cytomegalovirus infection of the peripapillary area were identified. Type I was characterized by spread of limited retinitis to the optic disk margin, good central visual acuity, and permanent arcuate and altitudinal visual field defects that enlarged and became more comp

Compound heterozygous KCNV2 variants contribute to cone dystrophy with supernormal rod responses in a Chinese family.

BACKGROUND: Cone dystrophy with supernormal rod response (CDSRR) is an autosomal recessive retinal disorder characterized by myopia, dyschromatopsia, nyctalopia, photophobia, and nystagmus. CDSRR is caused by mutations in KCNV2, the gene encoding for an electrically silent Kv subunit (Kvs) named Kv8.2. METHODS: A Chinese CDSRR family was recruited. Complete ophthalmology clinical examinations were performed to clarify the phenotype. Genetic examination was underwent using whole exome sequencing (WES). In addition, a candidate gene was validated by Sanger sequencing. Expression analysis in vit

Serial functional imaging poststroke reveals visual cortex reorganization.

PURPOSE: Visual cortical reorganization following injury remains poorly understood. The authors performed serial functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on patients with visual cortex infarction to evaluate early and late striate, ventral, and dorsal extrastriate cortical activation. METHODS: Patients were studied with fMRI within 10 days and at 6 months. The authors used a high-level visual activation task designed to activate the ventral extrastriate cortex. These data were compared to those of age-appropriate healthy control participants. RESULTS: The results from 24 healthy control

Water Bath Scallop Shucking System Based on Doneness Detection.

In the scallop shucking industry, labor-intensive manual operations and inconsistent product quality remain persistent challenges. To address these issues, this study develops a scallop shucking system based on visual feedback temperature control. To support this system, systematic experiments are conducted to determine the baseline shucking method and its initial parameters. On this basis, the scallop doneness detection model SDD-RT-DETR, serving as the system's core, integrates an enhanced backbone centered on the self-developed module HierarchicalRepBlock, a frequency-domain self-attention

Deep spatial proteomics reveals a suppressive immune niche linked to immune evasion in renal cell carcinoma.

Aim: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) presents an "immune paradox" where high CD8+ T cell infiltration correlates with poor survival and limited response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). Simple cell density metrics fail to capture the functional state of the immune microenvironment, suggesting an uncharacterized spatial mechanism underlying immune evasion and poor clinical outcomes. We aimed to develop an AI-driven spatial proteomics framework to decode this immunosuppressive phenotype. Methods: We developed PhenoSSP, a hierarchical deep learning framework based on a Vision Transfor

Genetic and clinical insights into pontocerebellar hypoplasia: Identification of novel variants in an Iranian cohort.

Pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH) comprises a group of rare neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by prenatal-onset cerebellar and pontine atrophy, often leading to severe motor and cognitive impairments. While advances in genetic diagnostics have improved our understanding, the full spectrum of causative mutations remains unclear, particularly in underrepresented populations. This study aims to delineate the clinical and genetic characteristics of Iranian patients with PCH. We conducted comprehensive clinical evaluations, brain imaging, and laboratory tests, followed by whole-exome sequen

Expanding the Phenotype of SETD5-Related Disorder Through a Facebook Support Group.

BACKGROUND: SETD5-related disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition caused by pathogenic variants in the SETD5 gene. Reported features include intellectual disability, developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, feeding difficulties, hypotonia, and dysmorphic facial features. The disorder was first described in 2014 with fewer than 75 reported cases in the literature to date. Given its rarity, affected families often turn to online communities for information and support. Previous studies have highlighted the growing role of social media platforms, such as Facebook, in connecting and suppo

Federated Learning for surgical vision in appendicitis classification: Results of the FedSurg EndoVis 2024 challenge.

Developing generalizable surgical AI requires multi-institutional data, yet privacy constraints preclude direct data sharing, making Federated Learning (FL) a natural candidate. Its application to complex, spatiotemporal surgical video remains largely unbenchmarked. We present the FedSurg Challenge, the first international initiative dedicated to FL in surgical vision, as a proof-of-concept evaluation using a multi-center dataset of laparoscopic appendectomies (preliminary subset of Appendix300). Three participant submissions were evaluated on generalization to an unseen clinical center and ce

A Heteroplasmic MT-CO2 m.8024G > A Variant Is Associated with Mitochondrial Bioenergetic Deficiency and Optic Atrophy.

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder caused by pathogenic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants. While MT-CO2 defects are implicated in neurodegeneration, their direct association with optic atrophy has not been reported. We identify a heteroplasmic MT-CO2 variant, m.8024G > A (p.Glu147Lys), in a patient with progressive optic atrophy and explore its potential association with mitochondrial dysfunction. A 13-year-old male with progressive unilateral-then-bilateral vision loss underwent comprehensive ophthalmic/neurological evaluation, trio whole-ex
