S100B Serum Level is Independent of Moderate Alcohol Intoxication.

OBJECTIVE: In Germany, among patients with minor head injury (MHI), the incidence of coexisting alcohol intoxication is indicated up to 50%. The neurological symptoms of patients with MHI may be caused or altered by alcohol intoxication, this could mislead to further, potential harmful, diagnostic steps or to misinterpretation of the symptoms and to non-execution of necessary treatments. In order to decide which patients need further diagnostics by CCT, S100B has been proposed as a potential selection criterion. On the other hand, studies have hypothesized that alcohol intoxication may lead to

1,4-Butanediol overdose mimicking toxic alcohol exposure.

Context: 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BD) is a gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) analogue with a similarly narrow therapeutic window that is becoming a more common cause of recreational overdose. Reports of confirmed exposures are limited.Case details: A 44 year-old man who had consumed alcohol subsequently became unconscious after ingesting what was thought to be GHB. The presentation was not entirely consistent with GHB poisoning, including a longer duration of unconsciousness and features that mimicked toxic alcohol exposure including a high anion gap metabolic acidosis (HAGMA) and osmol gap. The patient

Alcohol Use and Multimorbidity Among Individuals Living with HIV.

Alcohol is prevalent among people living with HIV and can lead to multiple comorbid conditions (multimorbidity). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between alcohol use history and multimorbidity among people living with HIV. A retrospective cohort study design was conducted at an urban, academic infectious disease clinic in Kentucky. Individuals seeking care between 2010 and 2014 were included. Modified Poisson regression was used to examine the relationship between alcohol use history (never, current, and former use) and multimorbidity (≥ 2 conditions). A total of 949 i

Alcohol Use Disorder and Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorders.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) frequently co-occurs with other psychiatric disorders, including personality disorders, which are pervasive, persistent, and impairing. Personality disorders are associated with myriad serious outcomes, have a high degree of co-occurrence with substance use disorders, including AUD, and incur significant health care costs. This literature review focuses on co-occurring AUD and personality disorders characterized by impulsivity and affective dysregulation, specifically antisocial personality disorders and borderline personality disorders. Prevalence rates, potential e

Alcoholism as a medical and socio-legal problem and ways to solve it.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Almost 3.3 million people die from alcohol abuse each year worldwide accounting for almost 5% of all deaths. In 20% of cases alcohol is a cause of death in traffic accidents with more than 250 million men and women suffering from health disorders due to alcohol consumption and the prospects for improving this situation are disappointing [1]. Alcohol abuse has a negative impact not only on the health of the population, but also on public relations in general. It is about causing physical, moral and material harm to the "Работает" part of the population, as well as financ

Pharmacotherapeutic options for co-morbid depression and alcohol dependence.

INTRODUCTION: Depression and alcohol dependence are frequently co-morbid and among the most prevalent mental disorders. They are a serious global health problem with social, interpersonal, and legal interpolations. Among pharmacological alternatives, anti-craving compounds as well as antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, benzodiazepines, and beta-blockers have shown efficacy for depression as well as alcohol consumption. The pharmacological treatment of both complex interwoven mental diseases is still challenging given the inconsistent results of open and double-blind randomized pl

Maternal alcohol consumption and oral clefts: a meta-analysis.

Our aim was to evaluate the possible correlation between maternal alcohol consumption during the first trimester and the risk of having an offspring with non-syndromic oral cleft. We electronically searched all published papers from 1950 to 2019 about maternal alcohol consumption and oral clefts in PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) databases. Descriptive and quantitative data were extracted from eligible studies for systemic evaluation and meta-analysis. A total of 12 publications met our inclusion criteria,

Self-administered alcohol enema causing chemical proctocolitis.

Selecting appropriate psychiatric treatment can be challenging. It is particularly difficult in a group of patients burdened a priori by serious somatic conditions, i.e. kidney or liver failure, neurological diseases or glaucoma. When the use of antipsychotics is warranted, in addition to an adequate clinical effect profile, attention should also be paid to other features of the drug, such as its pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties and possible side effects. Almost all, with the exception of pimavanserin (not available in Poland), currently regis- tered antipsychotics are D2 recepto

Prenatal alcohol exposure and facial morphology in a UK cohort.

BACKGROUND: High levels of prenatal alcohol exposure are known to cause an array of adverse outcomes including fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS); however, the effects of low to moderate exposure are less-well characterized. Previous findings suggest that differences in normal-range facial morphology may be a marker for alcohol exposure and related adverse effects. METHODS: In the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, we tested for an association between maternal alcohol consumption and six FAS-related facial phenotypes in their offspring, using both self-report questionnaires and the ma

Prenatal Alcohol Screening During Pregnancy by Midwives and Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use during pregnancy can have a variety of harmful consequences on the fetus. Lifelong effects include growth restriction, characteristic facial anomalies, and neurobehavioral dysfunction. This range of effects is known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). There is no amount, pattern, or timing of alcohol use during pregnancy proven safe for a developing embryo or fetus. Therefore, it is important to screen patients for alcohol use, inform them about alcohol's potential effects during pregnancy, encourage abstinence, and refer for intervention if necessary. However,

Swazi Pregnant Women's Knowledge on Consuming Alcoholic Beverages.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) affect all nations harshly, however, very little is known about the scope of FASD in Swaziland. Alcohol exposure in utero is one of the leading preventable causes of poor fetal birth outcomes. This study assessed the knowledge and practices of pregnant Swazi women, revealing that most participants had knowledge deficit on the effects of consuming alcohol on both the woman (63.3%, n = 19) and her fetus (83.3%, n = 25). The majority (83.0%, n = 25) of the participants reported that they did not drink alcohol, while 16.7% (n = 5) reported that they did cons

Non-alcoholic fatty liver in hereditary fructose intolerance.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by fat accumulation affecting >5% of the liver volume that is not explained by alcohol abuse. It is known that fructose gives rise to NAFLD and it has been recently described that the ingestion of fructose in low amounts in aldolase B deficient mice is associated with the development of fatty liver. Therefore, it is reasonable that patients with HFI (Hereditary Fructose Intolerance) present fatty liver at diagnosis, but its prevalence in patients treated and with adequate follow-up is not well documented in the literature.

"The Dop System of Alcohol Distribution is Dead, but It's Legacy Lives On….".

Objective: Determine the prevalence of Dop, a system of labor payment via alcoholic beverages, in a South African province, and its influence on maternal drinking and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Methods: Data from studies of FASD epidemiology were analyzed. Results: Forty-two percent to 67% of mothers reported drinking. In 1999, 5% of women reported Dop allocations in their lifetime: 14% of mothers of FASD children and 1% of controls. In 2010, 1.1% of mothers reported lifetime Dop: 1.6% of FASD mothers and 0.7% of controls. Commercial alcohol sales have replaced the Dop system. To

Cononsolvency of Elastin-like Polypeptides in Water/Alcohol Solutions.

Elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) are one of the most widely-studied classes of protein material because of their lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-like thermoresponsive behavior in aqueous solutions. Here, it is shown that ELPs also exhibit cononsolvency effects, similar to many other water-soluble polymers. The effect of solvent composition on the dilute solution phase behavior of an elastin-like polypeptide is studied here in water/alcohol blends that contain 0-40 vol % methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, or 1-propanol. In all systems studied, the ELP exhibits cononsolvency behavior at

Enzymatic synthesis of enantiopure alcohols: current state and perspectives.

Enantiomerically pure alcohols, as key intermediates, play an essential role in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical and chemical industries. Among the methods used for their production, biotechnological approaches are generally considered a green and effective alternative due to their mild reaction conditions and remarkable enantioselectivity. An increasing number of enzymatic strategies for the synthesis of these compounds has been developed over the years, among which seven primary methodologies can be distinguished as follows: (1) enantioselective water addition to alkenes, (2) enantioselectiv
