Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) negatively affect the performance and well-being of sheep. Due to anthelmintic resistance, GIN are difficult to control leading producers to choose breeds that can exhibit resistance to parasitism. An example is Katahdin sheep. Katahdins are raised in various climates and management systems in the United States. These environmental factors can be combined to form eco-management groupings or clusters. We hypothesized that GIN challenge varies predictably based on the characteristics of these environmental clusters. Forty Katahdin producers from across the United

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Folk medicine reports have described the use of Chenopodium ambrosioides as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anthelmintic herb. These effects, including its activity against intestinal worms, are already scientifically observed. However, the immunological mechanisms of this species in the treatment of Schistosoma mansoni infection are unknown.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the immunological and anti-Schistosoma mansoni effects of a crude Chenopodium ambrosioides hydro-alcoholic extract (HCE).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the in vitro analysis, cercariae and

BACKGROUND: Ascaris lumbricoides is one of the three major soil-transmitted gastrointestinal helminths (STHs) that infect more than 440 million people in the world, ranking this neglected tropical disease among the most common afflictions of people living in poverty. Children infected with this roundworm suffer from malnutrition, growth stunting as well as cognitive and intellectual deficits. An effective vaccine is urgently needed to complement anthelmintic deworming as a better approach to control helminth infections. As37 is an immunodominant antigen of Ascaris suum, a pig roundworm closely

BACKGROUND: Medicinal plants have proven their importance as a valuable source of molecules with therapeutic potential. Monotheca buxifolia (Falc.) A. DC. (family: Sapotaceae) is traditionally used as a hematinic, laxative, digestive, anthelmintic, antipyretic, and in the treatment of gastro-urinary disorders. To provide scientific evidence for its folkloric use, the present study investigated Monotheca buxifolia fruit hydro-ethanolic extract (MBHE) for its prospective antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities. MBHE was eluted through column chromatography to isolate the bi

To investigate future tools for targeted selective treatment against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in adult dairy cows, we evaluated herd and individual cow factors associated with the post-treatment milk production (MP) response over time. A field trial involving 20 pasturing dairy herds in Western France was conducted in autumn 2010 and autumn 2011. In each herd, lactating cows were randomly allocated to a treatment group (fenbendazole) (623 cows), or a control group (631 cows). Daily cow MP was recorded from 2 weeks before until 10 to 14 weeks after treatment. Individual serum anti-Oster

INTRODUCTION: In Ghana, schistosomiasis (SCH) and soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infections are of major public health problems in children. In the last decades, various interventions have been instituted by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in collaboration with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for the control and subsequent elimination of SCH and STH. However, these infections still remain common in both adults and children in many districts in Ghana. This study aimed to identify challenges in achieving sustainable coverage of mass drug administration for the control of STH and SCH and t

Two controlled efficacy studies were conducted to determine the effective dose of fosfatriclaben (FTCB) and compare its fasciolicidal efficacy with that of three commercial products against eggs and adult stages of Fasciola hepatica in artificially infected cattle. In study 1, 20 trematode-free Holstein Friesian steers were infected on day 0 with 500 F. hepatica metacercariae. Ten weeks after infection and the steers were confirmed to be positive for trematode eggs through a modified sedimentation method. On day 75, they were divided into five groups of four animals each for treatment. Group 1

BACKGROUND: Schistosomes are highly efficient evaders of human immunity, as evident by their ability to survive in human blood for years. How they protect themselves against the constant attack by a key element of innate immunity, the complement system, has remained unclear. In this study, new light is shed on the interaction between distinct life-cycle stages of Schistosoma mansoni and the human complement system.
RESULTS: We demonstrate that schistosomula, the young stage assumed immediately after cercaria penetration of the skin, are extremely vulnerable towards complement-mediated killing

BACKGROUND: Geographically targeted Taenia solium ring approaches consisting of treating individuals within a radius of 100-meter of a cysticercosis positive pig have been trialled in Peru. This study explored if a similar approach could be proposed to control T. solium transmission in a post elimination setting in Zambia, focussing on community members' willingness to be sampled and treated.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The study was conducted in a community where elimination of active T. solium transmission was achieved. All eligible pigs and people were sampled, at 4- to 6-monthly i

OBJECTIVE: To assess the status of intestinal schistosomiasis among preschool-aged (PSAC) and school-aged children (SAC) and to compare the efficacy of praziquantel (PZQ) in both groups.
METHODS: The study was conducted on 400 children; 103 PSAC and 297 SAC. Diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni was based on triplicate Kato-Katz thick smears from a single stool sample. To identify the missed cases by Kato-Katz, 120 randomly selected negative cases (38 PSAC and 82 SAC) were screened by real-time PCR. All S. mansoni-positive cases by Kato-Katz were treated by crushed PZQ tablets. Four weeks after tr

This report summarizes the design and outcomes of randomized controlled operational research trials performed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation (SCORE) from 2009 to 2019. Their goal was to define the effectiveness and test the limitations of current WHO-recommended schistosomiasis control protocols by performing large-scale pragmatic trials to compare the impact of different schedules and coverage regimens of praziquantel mass drug administration (MDA). Although there were limitations to study designs and performanc

The patient was a 83-year- old male who worked as a farmer. He had complaints of weight loss, abdominal pain and joint pains for almost 5 months. Twenty days ago, the patient was checked at another hospital for complaints of occasional coughing and bloody sputum. He was treated with a diagnosis of pneumonia. His respiratory complaints were reduced, but there was no relief of his ongoing abdominal pain. Gastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy were performed to examine for possible etiologies of continuous abdominal pain. Biopsies were taken from duodenal bulbus and second duodenal segment. Intense e

Clinical history: An outbreak of intense pruritus and weight loss in a herd of 40 alpacas (Vicugna pacos) in the south-west of France was investigated after the death of 14 adults. One alpaca was referred to a veterinary teaching hospital for diagnosis and treatment but died soon after and one of the dead alpacas was submitted for necropsy. Clinical findings: The remaining alpacas were intensely pruritic with variably severe and extensive alopecia, erythema, lichenification and crusting on the face, ventral abdomen and distal limbs. Superficial skin scrapes from five animals revealed large num
