Rounding behavior in the reporting of headache frequency complicates headache chronification research.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the extent of measurement error arising from rounding in headache frequency reporting (days per month) in a population sample of headache sufferers. BACKGROUND: When reporting numerical health information, individuals tend to round their estimates. The tendency to round to the nearest 5 days when reporting headache frequency can distort distributions and engender unreliability in frequency estimates in both clinical and research contexts. METHODS: This secondary analysis of the 2005 American Migraine Prevalence and Prevention study survey characterized the populat

15 years of genetic approaches in vivo for addiction research: Opioid receptor and peptide gene knockout in mouse models of drug abuse.

The endogenous opioid system is expressed throughout the brain reinforcement circuitry, and plays a major role in reward processing, mood control and the development of addiction. This neuromodulator system is composed of three receptors, mu, delta and kappa, interacting with a family of opioid peptides derived from POMC (β-endorphin), preproenkephalin (pEnk) and preprodynorphin (pDyn) precursors. Knockout mice targeting each gene of the opioid system have been created almost two decades ago. Extending classical pharmacology, these mutant mice represent unique tools to tease apart the specific

Gastroesophageal reflux disease management according to contemporary international guidelines: a translational study.

AIM: To test the Genval recommendations and the usefulness of a short trial of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) in the initial management and maintenance treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients. METHODS: Five hundred and seventy seven patients with heartburn were recruited. After completing a psychometric tool to assess quality of life (PGWBI) and a previously validated GERD symptom questionnaire (QUID), patients were grouped into those with esophagitis (EE, n = 306) or without mucosal damage (NERD, n = 271) according to endoscopy results. The study started with a 2-wk period

Imaging biomarkers for treatment development for impaired cognition: report of the sixth CNTRICS meeting: Biomarkers recommended for further development.

The Cognitive Neuroscience Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia initiative, funded by an R13 conference grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, has sought to facilitate the translation of measures from the basic science of cognition into practical brain-based tools to measure treatment effects on cognition in schizophrenia. In this overview article, we summarize the process and products of the sixth meeting in this series, which focused on the identification of promising imaging paradigms, based on the measurement of cognitive evoked potentials (event-related po

National Kidney Foundation consensus conference on cardiovascular and kidney diseases and diabetes risk: an integrated therapeutic approach to reduce events.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of death in industrialized nations. Type 2 diabetes is a CVD risk factor that confers risk similar to a previous myocardial infarction in an individual who does not have diabetes. In addition, the most common cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is diabetes. Together, diabetes and hypertension account for more than two-thirds of CVD risk, and other risk factors such as dyslipidemia contribute to the remainder of CVD risk. CKD, particularly with presence of significant albuminuria, should be considered an additional cardiovascular risk fact

Comorbidity of anxiety and conduct problems in children: implications for clinical research and practice.

Given the relative lack of research on the comorbidity of anxiety disorders (ADs) and conduct problems (oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder) in youth, we examine this comorbidity from both basic and applied perspectives. First, we review the concept of comorbidity and provide a framework for understanding issues pertaining to comorbidity. Second, we examine the comorbidity of ADs and conduct problems in both epidemiological and clinical studies. Third, we explore the artifactual and substantive reasons for the comorbidity of these disorders. Finally, we discuss the implications of

Facial nerve schwannoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize the current literature on facial nerve schwannoma and make practical recommendations based on best practices for the management of this difficult but benign neoplasm. RECENT FINDINGS: Facial nerve schwannoma can be asymptomatic or can present with progressive or acute facial nerve palsy. Associated otological symptoms such as conductive and/or sensorineural hearing loss can occur. The tumor is usually slow-growing and can involve multiple segments of the nerve. Radiographic imaging and facial nerve electrical testing can be helpful

Value-of-information analysis to guide future research in colorectal cancer screening.

PURPOSE: To identify the most useful areas for research in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening by using a value-of-information analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cost-effectiveness of screening strategies, including colonoscopy, computed tomographic (CT) colonography, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and barium enema examination, were compared by using a Markov model. Monetary net benefit (NB), a measure of cost-effectiveness, was calculated by multiplying effect (life-years gained) by willingness to pay (100,000 dollars per life-year gained) and subtracting cost. A value-of-information analysis was used

Athletic performance and the oral contraceptive.

Some reports suggest variation in physiological responses and athletic performance, for female athletes at specific phases of the menstrual cycle. However, inconsistent findings are common due to the inappropriate verification of menstrual cycle phase, small subject numbers, high intra- and interindividual variability in estrogen and progesterone concentration, and the pulsatile secretion of these hormones. Therefore, the oral contraceptive (OC) cycle may provide a more stable environment in which to evaluate the acute effect of reproductive hormones on physiological variables and exercise per

Developmental aspects of the upper airway: report from an NHLBI Workshop, March 5-6, 2009.

The upper airway serves three important functions: respiration, swallowing, and speech. During development it undergoes significant structural and functional changes that affect its size, shape, and mechanical properties. Abnormalities of the upper airway require prompt attention, because these often alter ventilatory patterns and gas exchange, particularly during sleep when upper airway motor tone and ventilatory drive are diminished. Recognizing the relationship of early life events to lung health and disease, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), with cofunding from the Off

[What's new in dermatological research?].

Medical literature is rich with new and relevant information, resulting from basic or applied research. Some strong arguments are presented in this document. Firstly, the discovery and role of a virus, the polyomavirus, in the development of Merkel tumours. It is a small virus with double bit DNA strand, coding for a oncoprotein. If the polyomavirus plays a causal role in the tumorigenesis, it acts by various mechanisms. The micro-RNAs represent an abundant class of small RNA not coding for proteins, but which control the gene expression coding for proteins on a post-transcriptional level. The

Measurement of panic-like responses following intravenous infusion of sodium lactate in panic-prone rats.

This unit describes a putative animal model for panic disorder. The basic premise is that pharmacological disruption of critical brain regions implicated in the circuitry of anxiety will lead to a condition similar to that of the human disorder. A clinically relevant test, the sodium lactate challenge, is utilized to assess parallels between the human condition and this rat model.
