OBJECTIVE: Bilateral breast cancer is uncommon (1-2.6% of all patients with breast carcinoma). There are conflicting reports and inadequate data regarding the incidence and survival of such patients. A 26-year-old woman presented with unilateral breast enlargement 5 years after bilateral reduction mammaplasty. After careful physical examination combined with a clinical assessment, mammogram, and histologic tissue examination, the patient underwent bilateral reduction mammaplasty using an inferior wedge resection technique. Histologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of a fibrocystic breast disease in both breasts. The most common differential diagnoses are juvenile fibroadenoma, virginal hypertrophy, fibrocystic disease, and cystosarcoma phylloides.

We describe the first case of malignant eccrine poroma arising in a lymphoedematous site. The patient had long-standing lymphoedema of the upper limb following breast cancer treatment. Lymphoedema is a recognised complication of breast cancer treatment and a risk factor for the subsequent development of malignancy. Possible mechanisms for this are discussed.

The aim of this study was to document the clinical features and long-term outcomes in 43 cases of bilateral breast carcinoma. All the women were diagnosed by a single surgeon who had evaluated 13,443 patients with breast-related complaints over a 40-year period. Radiotherapy is a critical component in the treatment of breast cancer, a disease that is estimated to have affected 203,500 US women in 2002. According to the data from some series, an estimated 90% of patients treated with radiotherapy for breast cancer will develop a degree of radiation-induced dermatitis. This review describes the indications and techniques of radiotherapy for breast cancer. The pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and contributing factors of radiation-related skin injury are discussed. A review of recent clinical research addressing skin toxicity is provided.

Lymphatic drainage from the breast is principally to the ipsilateral axilla.
