Gypenosides Synergistically Reduce the Extracellular Matrix of Hepatic Stellate Cells and Ameliorate Hepatic Fibrosis in Mice.

Liver fibrosis resulting from chronic liver damage is becoming one of the major threats to health worldwide. Active saponin constituents isolated from Gynostemma pentaphyllum were found to possess a protective effect in liver diseases. Here, we obtained a naturally abundant gypenoside, XLVI, and evaluated its liver protection activity in both animal and cellular models. The results showed that it ameliorated acute and chronic liver injuries and lightened the process of fibrogenesis in vivo. XLVI can inhibit TGF-β-induced activation of hepatic stellate cells and ECM deposition in vitro. The und

Jerveratrum-Type Steroidal Alkaloids Inhibit β-1,6-Glucan Biosynthesis in Fungal Cell Walls.

The limited number of available effective agents necessitates the development of new antifungals. We report that jervine, a jerveratrum-type steroidal alkaloid isolated from Veratrum californicum, has antifungal activity. Phenotypic comparisons of cell wall mutants, K1 killer toxin susceptibility testing, and quantification of cell wall components revealed that β-1,6-glucan biosynthesis was significantly inhibited by jervine. Temperature-sensitive mutants defective in essential genes involved in β-1,6-glucan biosynthesis, including BIG1, KEG1, KRE5, KRE9, and ROT1, were hypersensitive to jervi

Corneal endothelial protection during manual small-incision cataract surgery: A narrative review.

Cataract causes bilateral blindness in 20 million people globally, the vast majority of whom live in developing countries. Manual small-incision cataract surgery (MSICS) has emerged as an efficient and economical alternative to phacoemulsification, giving comparable results in terms of final visual gain. One of the important determinants of postoperative visual gain is the status of the corneal endothelium. Multiple factors such as corneal distortion, irrigation solution turbulence, mechanical trauma by instruments, nuclear fragments, intraocular lens contact, and free oxygen radicals, all hav

Antiviral Activities of Quercetin and Isoquercitrin Against Human Herpesviruses.

We previously reported that the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction of a 70% ethanol extract of Elaeocarpus sylvestris (ESE) inhibits varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) replication in vitro. PGG (1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-ß-D-glucose) is a major chemical constituent of the EtOAc fraction of ESE that inhibits VZV but not HCMV replication. In this study, we comprehensively screened the chemical compounds identified in the EtOAc fraction of ESE for potential antiviral properties. Among the examined compounds, quercetin and isoquercitrin displayed potent antiviral activities

A Bufadienolide-Enriched Fraction of Bryophyllum pinnatum Inhibits Human Myometrial Contractility In Vitro.

Bryophyllum pinnatum has been used since the 1970s to prevent premature labour, first in anthroposophic hospitals and, more recently, also in the main Swiss perinatal centres. However, it is not known which compounds in B. pinnatum leaves contribute to the tocolytic effect. Here we studied the effects of a flavonoid-enriched fraction, the corresponding flavonoid aglycon mixture, a bufadienolide-enriched fraction, and B. pinnatum leaf press juice on human myometrial contractility in vitro. The strength (area under the curve and amplitude) and frequency of contractions were recorded using strips
