Cohen syndrome (CS) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by intellectual disability, postnatal microcephaly, facial abnormalities, abnormal truncal fat distribution, myopia, and pigmentary retinopathy. It is often considered an underdiagnosed condition, especially in children with developmental delay and intellectual disability. Here we report on four individuals from a large Jordanian family clinically diagnosed with CS. Using Trio Exome Sequencing (Trio-WES) and MLPA analyses we identified a maternally inherited novel intronic nucleotide substitution c.3446-23T>G leading to

This review article aims to guide the clinician in establishing a diagnosis in patients with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), presenting antenatally or postnatally. ACC may be isolated, or occur in association with other neuroanatomical lesions and/or congenital anomalies, and has many different genetic causes. Neuropsychological outcome varies considerably from normal to profound intellectual disability depending on the etiology. Approximately 25% of individuals with antenatally diagnosed apparently isolated ACC have intellectual disability. Subtle neurological, social, and learning def

PURPOSE: The available tools used to describe childhood dystonia tend to offer a monodimensional view of the person functioning, which may overlook significant changes induced by treatment. We applied the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) perspective to the description of the clinical picture of a dystonic child treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) to get a more global representation of the treatment effect.
METHOD: An 8-year-old child with secondary dystonia was selected within the institutional program for advanced treatment of pediatric dystonia

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A high proportion of people with intellectual disability have behaviour problems and psychotropic medication is a commonly used management strategy for these behaviours, despite lack of good-quality evidence to support this practice.
RECENT FINDINGS: In recent years, one randomized controlled trial among adults and four on children with intellectual disability have been published showing effectiveness of low-dose risperidone in the management of behaviour problems as compared with placebo. Most of these randomized controlled trials are of good quality and included a reasona

The precise nature of the relationship among attention deficit, hyperkinesis, and specific learning disabilities remains a mystery. They are encountered in one another's company with far greater than chance frequency. It is clear, on the one hand, that attention deficit and learning disability aggravate one another; that is, that what is difficult to learn is difficult to attend to, and vice versa. Furthermore, in children at least, attending ability and activity level have a reciprocal relationship; that is, improvement of attention tends to reduce activity level, and vice versa. On the other

BACKGROUND: Children with mental health problems have been neglected in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) studies. Therefore, the aims of the current study were 1) to assess the influence of the presence of mental or physical health problems on HRQOL; and 2) to analyze the effects of item overlap between mental health problems and HRQOL-measurements.
METHODS: Proxy- and self-rated HRQOL (KIDSCREEN-27) of children 9-14 years old was assessed across children with mental health problems (n = 535), children with physical health problems (n = 327), and healthy controls (n = 744). Multiple lin

This study was carried out to determine the use of oral healthcare services by children with special needs in Lagos, Nigeria. In this study, 125 structured questionnaires were sent to parents of children in two public day schools for CSN in Lagos. Once the questionnaires were returned, oral examinations were scheduled. The findings were compared to a control group of healthy children from two public schools in the same environment. One hundred and nine CSN and 134 controls, aged 5 to 19 years, participated in the study. The majority of the children had parents who had a low educational level.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate maternal-fetal outcome of infants born after pregnancies complicated by (H)ELLP syndrome.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study was performed on patients with the HELLP or ELLP syndrome. Maternal and perinatal complications were recorded. The follow-up period of the infants was at least 18 months. A multivariate regression analysis was done to define the variables mostly contributing to adverse outcome.
RESULTS: No maternal deaths occurred. Eighteen infants of the HELLP group and six infants of the ELLP group died; total perinatal mortality was 17.6%. After 18

The major purpose of this article is to explore the substantial disparity between access to resources provided at birth to a child with spina bifida--a so-called Baby Doe--and later access to resources needed to sustain that child throughout the life course. The author's organizing principle is the allocative paradoxes created by the clash of technology, scarcity, and demography. The study is based on an eight-year inquiry into the way life-saving medical decisions are made about children with spina bifida. This work focuses on the qualitative aspects of that inquiry. There is a societal need

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is common during childhood and adolescence and is associated with negative outcomes such as increased severity of pain, reduced function (e.g. missing school), and low mood (e.g. high levels of depression and anxiety). Psychological therapies, traditionally delivered face-to-face with a therapist, are efficacious at reducing pain intensity and disability. However, new and innovative technology is being used to deliver these psychological therapies remotely, meaning barriers to access to treatment such as distance and cost can be removed or reduced. Therapies delivered

The adverse effects of alcohol on the developing human comprise a spectrum of structural anomalies and behavioral and neurocognitive disabilities, most accurately termed fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). We previously have proposed revisions to the 1996 Institute of Medicine Diagnostic Criteria for diagnoses in the FASD continuum [fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), partial fetal alcohol syndrome (PFAS), alcohol related birth defects (ARBD), and alcohol related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND)], allowing for more reproducible and accurate FASD diagnosis in a clinical setting [Hoyme et al.,

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) refer to physical, cognitive, and behavioural symptoms in an individual whose mother consumed alcohol during pregnancy. It is the leading cause of non-genetic avoidable mental disability, with an estimated worldwide prevalence of 1%. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnostic criteria are met for 50-80% of patients with FASD. Methylphenidate (MPH) is the first-line pharmacological treatment for ADHD. This study aims to explore the lived experience of children with FASD taking MPH and their caregivers to adapt prescribing modalities by con

Dental general anesthesia (DGA) is a safe and high-quality restorative and preventive treatment option for children with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC), who require extensive dental treatment and exhibit anxiety and emotional or cognitive immaturity or are medically compromised. However, several postoperative complications have been reported in children under DGA. This study aimed to evaluate and analyze the prevalence of the relevant factors of postoperative complications in healthy Chinese children following DGA to provide a foundation for pre-, intra-, and postoperative overall healt

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) can result in disability, growth disturbance, and systemic complications. This study investigated the efficacy and adverse effects of oral methotrexate (MTX) therapy in Taiwanese children with JRA.
METHODS: The medical records of 52 Taiwanese children with JRA treated with oral MTX were retrospectively analyzed. The disease onset was polyarticular in 22 children, oligoarticular in 13, and systemic in 17. The indication for MTX therapy was lack of efficacy of previous drugs, including two or more nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,
