INTRODUCTION: Only two behavioral addictions (BAs) are currently recognized in international classifications (gambling disorder: GbD; gaming disorder: GmD), while some of them await further investigation (food addiction: FA; sexual addiction: SA). Neurocognitive functioning is considered a risk factor for BAs. Research is quite abundant for GbD and highlights specific deficits in several cognitive functions. Nevertheless, grey areas still exist. The aim of this research programme is to investigate the neurocognitive profiles of patients presenting with various BAs and to establish parallels be

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common complication in surgical patients, particularly those with pre-existing chronic inflammation. Although impaired glymphatic clearance, a brain waste drainage system dependent on astrocytic aquaporin-4 (AQP4) polarization, is implicated in neurodegenerative disorders, its role in POCD pathogenesis and interaction with neuroinflammation remains unknown. Here, we investigated whetherglymphatic dysfunctiondrives postoperative neuroinflammation and cognitive deficits using a "dual-hit inflammation"model. Our results revealed glymphatic influx/eff

How can theory and mathematical modeling help accelerate research in psychiatry? Here we highlight the promise of computational approaches via three recent trends: multi-scale models of working memory which link receptors and cell-types to brain-wide activity and behavior; the extension of mechanistic computational models from working memory to other cognitive functions including conscious perception, attention and planning; and cross-species comparative models of cognition that give rise to translational computational neuroscience. These developments demonstrate the feasibility of achieving u

Understanding the unique functions of different subregions of primate prefrontal cortex has been a longstanding goal in cognitive neuroscience. Yet, the anatomy and function of one of its largest subregions (the frontopolar cortex) remain enigmatic and underspecified. Our Society for Neuroscience minisymposium Primate Frontopolar Cortex: From Circuits to Complex Behaviors will comprise a range of new anatomic and functional approaches that have helped to clarify the basic circuit anatomy of the frontal pole, its functional involvement during performance of cognitively demanding behavioral para

Preeclampsia is a dangerous hypertensive disorder of pregnancy with known links to negative child health outcomes. Here, we review epidemiological and basic neuroscience work from the past several decades linking prenatal preeclampsia to altered neurodevelopment. This work demonstrates increased rates of neuropsychiatric disorders [e.g., increased autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)] in children of preeclamptic pregnancies, as well as increased rates of cognitive impairments [e.g., decreased intelligence quotient (IQ), academic performance] and neurologica

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect the development of social cognition (and identify a risk factor for several physical and mental disorders). Theory of Mind (ToM) is a key predictor of social functioning, mental health, and quality of life. No previous study explored the effect of mild ACEs on the neural correlates of ToM in healthy humans. In 23 healthy participants, we used brain blood oxygen level-dependent fMRI to study the effect of ACEs on the neural responses to tasks targeting affective and cognitive ToM. Results pointed out an association between ACEs and a lower neural resp

The symptomatic treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) nowadays is of similar importance as immunotherapy within a comprehensive concept of therapy of this chronic disease, since it contributes considerably to the reduction of disabilities in activities of daily living as well as social and occupational life. Moreover, symptomatic treatment is of great importance for amelioration of quality of life. Since our last survey of symptomatic MS treatment in 2004 and publication of the guidelines of the German Neurological Society and the Klinisches Kompetenznetz Multiple Sklerose (KKN‑MS) in 2014 seve

Adequate folic acid intake is an effective dietary-based prevention tool for reducing the risk of neural tube defects. Achieving adequate intake for the prevention of neural tube defects frequently requires the consumption of foods fortified with folic acid and/or the use of folic acid-containing dietary supplements. To date, research on the potential for adverse effects of high intakes of folic acid has been limited. Without such research, it is difficult to define a value for high intake. In May 2015, an expert panel was tasked with examining the available scientific literature and making re

INTRODUCTION: Children with epilepsy have more behavioral and cognitive problem than children with other chronic illness and children in the general population. Risk factors are multiple probably involving a combination of seizure, family and child variable, behavioral problems (depression, occur frequently but may be unrecognized). Anxiety disorders and psychoses are less common.
DEVELOPMENT: The learning and behavioral found in epileptic children is multifactorial, first the effects of the conditions causing the epilepsy, in addition the epilepsy itself may cause, change in the nervous syst

This chart review study examined the serum vitamin B12 and folate status of 102 geriatric patients newly admitted to a private psychiatric hospital. Only 3.7% were B12 deficient and 1.3% were folate deficient; 4% were anemic. Nevertheless, those with below-median values of both vitamins had significantly lower Mini-Mental State scores than patients higher in one or both vitamins. Patients with "organic psychosis" with a negative family history for psychiatric disorder had significantly lower B12 levels than those with a positive family history. In major depression, folate levels correlated neg

BACKGROUND: Lack of early molecular biomarkers in sporadic behavioral variants of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and its clinical overlap with primary psychiatric disorders (PPD) hampers its diagnostic distinction. Synaptic dysfunction is an early feature in bvFTD and identification of specific biomarkers might improve its diagnostic accuracy. Our goal was to understand the differential diagnostic potential of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) synaptic biomarkers in bvFTD versus PPD and their specificity towards bvFTD compared with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and controls. Additionally, we explored the

Previous research has found that people with autism generate few novel responses in ideational fluency tasks, and it has been suggested this deficit is a specific correlate of stereotyped/repetitive behavior. We assessed generativity in children with pragmatic language impairment (PLI) who showed communicative abnormalities resembling those seen in autism. We compared four groups: high-functioning autism; PLI; specific language impairment; and control. Generativity was measured using two fluency tasks previously shown to be sensitive to autistic disorder. Correlational analysis revealed a sign

Cognitive impairment is a common complication in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that substantially affects their treatment adherence, self-management ability and prognosis; it is an important extrapulmonary complication. Its pathogenesis is complex and mainly involves cerebral hypoperfusion and neuronal damage caused by chronic hypoxemia and disruption of the blood-brain barrier and neural structures by systemic inflammatory responses. Smoking, frequent acute exacerbations, coexisting cerebrovascular diseases, anxiety, depression and sleep disorders are amongst the

Trials with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) have provided contradictory findings regarding the presence of cognitive side effects. The development of depression in some patients also raises questions about whether cognitive dysfunction might be secondary to an organic, interferon-induced mood disorder. Thirty patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia were examined before and during treatment with IFN-alpha alone or IFN-alpha and chemotherapy. Increased depressive symptoms and declines in information processing and executive functions were observed, but depression alone could not account for cogn

The goal of the present study was to explore characteristic cognitive profiles which distinguish between psychiatric patients with and without organic mental disorder (OMD), using Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination (NCSE), a brief screening battery. A mild degree of cognitive deficits was found to be common in the Non-OMD psychiatric group. The deficit was especially pronounced in the Memory domain. Patients in the OMD group demonstrated a higher frequency of moderate and severe impairment. The best discriminator was the scale assessing visuospatial constructional ability and visual

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of physical, psychological, and cognitive multimorbidity is characterised by marked socioeconomic status (SES) inequalities. However, the relationships between multimorbidity patterns-particularly those involving cognitive conditions-and healthcare utilisation, as well as the role of health insurance, remain poorly understood. This study aims to explore healthcare-seeking behaviour among individuals with multimorbidity and assess whether these associations vary by SES and health insurance coverage.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: This multicohort study analysed harmonised dat

IMPORTANCE: Associations among general intelligence (IQ), educational attainment (EA), and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are not well understood.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between IQ, EA, and AUD risk.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The association between IQ and AUD risk was examined in a Swedish national conscription cohort. Potential causality was explored using mendelian randomization (MR) analyses, and the association of polygenic scores (PGS) for cognitive performance with AUD diagnosis was assessed. Participant data were obtained from cross-linked Swedish national regist

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is classically described as a pure motor disease; however, there is growing evidence of a range of cognitive impairment. Cognitive abnormalities include deficiencies in frontal executive skills, varying from mild deficits to meeting criteria for diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Cognitive impairment occurs in sporadic and familial forms of ALS. Patients may present with cognitive deficits before, after, or at the onset of motor neuron disease. Structural and functional imaging studies have shown extramotor cortical degeneration corresponding to lev

In an effort to elucidate the role of cognitive factors in the maintenance of bulimia nervosa, the efficacy of two psychological treatments was examined in a randomised control trial: cognitive behaviour therapy in the absence of explicit exposure instructions was compared with exposure and response prevention treatment in the absence of cognitive restructuring procedures. In the short term both treatments were successful at effecting substantial improvement in both the specific and the non-specific psychopathology of the disorder. However, at a one year follow up, whilst improvements were wel

Disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid-space hydrocephalus (DESH), characterized by tight high convexity CSF spaces, ventriculomegaly, and enlarged Sylvian fissures, is thought to be an indirect marker of a CSF dynamics disorder. The clinical significance of DESH with regard to cognitive decline in a community setting is not yet well defined. The goal of this work is to determine if DESH is associated with cognitive decline. Participants in the population-based Mayo Clinic Study of Aging (MCSA) who met the following criteria were included: age ≥ 65 years, 3T MRI, and diagnosis of cognitively
