Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), that affects 2 to 3% of the general population, is characterized by recurrent intrusive thoughts and repetitive, time-consuming behaviors. It is a severely incapacitating mental illness that causes profound impairment in psychosocial functioning and quality of life. Although the physiopathology of OCD is still far from resolved, the existence of a biological basis for OCD is now clearly established and should be interpreted from phenomenological considerations, on the one hand, and in the light of our increasing knowledge of the physiology of cortico-subcor

BACKGROUND: Gaucher disease (GD) is caused by deficiency of beta-glucocerebrosidase (GCase) due to biallelic variations in the GBA1 gene. Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative condition. The classic motor symptoms of PD may be preceded by many non-motor symptoms (NMS), which include hyposmia, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder, constipation, cognitive impairment, and depression. Population studies have identified mutations in GBA1 as the main risk factor for idiopathic PD. The present study sought to evaluate the prevalence of NMS in a cohort of pat

BACKGROUND: Serotonergic psychedelics, such as psilocybin, alter perceptual and cognitive systems that are functionally integrated with the amygdala. These changes can alter cognition and emotions that are hypothesized to contribute to their therapeutic utility. However, the neural mechanisms of cognitive and subcortical systems altered by psychedelics are not well understood.
METHODS: We used resting-state functional magnetic resonance images collected during a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 24 healthy adults under 0.2 mg/kg psilocybin to estimate the directed

The contemporary group treatment of veterans from the Vietnam War to the present who suffer from combat-related PTSD is reviewed in light of the dynamic understanding of combat trauma developed during and since World War II. Both dynamic and cognitive behavioral group therapies are explored. The common features of all group treatments of combat PTSD involve the development of trust and the communalization of trauma within a cohesive group. Further research is needed to increase our understanding of effectiveness, mediating factors, and relationships between childhood experience and combat trau

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) and chronic tic disorders (CTD) are stigmatizing disorders that may significantly impact self-esteem. Alternatively, comorbid psychiatric illnesses may affect self-esteem more than tics themselves. Extant research on self-esteem in TS/CTD is limited, has inconsistently examined the effect of comorbidities on self-esteem, and yields mixed findings.
METHOD: This study aimed to clarify the roles of tics versus comorbid diagnoses on self-esteem in a large, carefully diagnosed sample of adults with TS/CTD (N = 122) receiving 10 weeks of Comprehensive Behavioral I

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia pose management challenges for caregivers and clinicians. Firstline nonpharmacologic treatments include eliminating physical and emotional stressors, modifying the patient's environment, and establishing daily routines. Family members and caregivers benefit from education about dementia symptoms and reminders that the behaviors are normal and unintentional. Cognitive and emotion-oriented interventions, sensory stimulation interventions, behavior management techniques, and other psychosocial interventions are modestly effective. In refractory ca

Binge eating, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, anorexia-bulimia are terms often used without really knowing what precisely one is referring to. Otherwise, there are many articles concerning anorexia nervosa in medical literature, a disease, which can be seen and fascinates. These eating disorders are frequent in today's society; medical, psychological and social consequences are important.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis meningitis (TBM) is the most devastating form of tuberculosis (TB), causing high mortality or disability. The diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis is notably difficult due to its rapid onset and nonspecific symptoms. Early recognition and targeted treatment are the principal means of ensuring tuberculosis control. Here we report a case of tuberculosis meningitis with nonspecific symptoms including mental and cognitive impairments concomitant to Iliopsoas muscle abscess and spondylodiscitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we describe a case of TBM in a 38- year- old Asian male

BACKGROUND: In some contexts, people living with HIV (PLWH) who are virally non-suppressed and participating in an intensive adherence counseling (IAC) program have demonstrated non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) even after IAC. There is limited literature on the facilitators and barriers to ART adherence following IAC.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the perspectives of healthcare workers (HCWs) on the facilitators and barriers to ART adherence following IAC among PLWH in Northern Uganda.
METHODS: This was a descriptive qualitative study conducted among HCWs at the ART cli

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase the risk of developing chronic pain in adulthood. However, the impact of ACEs and specific ACEs subdomains on treatment response to cognitive behavioral interventions, which are among the frontline interventions for chronic pain, remains unexplored. This exploratory secondary analysis of a psychotherapy trial for chronic pain examined the associations among total ACEs and ACEs subdomains (household dysfunction and maltreatment) with pre-intervention level and treatment-related change in pain severity and interference. Trial participants (116 Vetera

Connexin 43 (Cx43), particularly its truncated isoform GJA1-20 k, has shown promise in mitigating neuronal injury through mitochondrial regulation. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of astrocyte-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) enriched with GJA1-20 k (Exo-GJA1-20 k) for treating traumatic brain injury (TBI). Primary astrocytes were isolated and transfected with an adeno-associated viral vector to overexpress GJA1-20 k. EVs were extracted and characterized using nanoparticle tracking analysis and Western blotting. A controlled cortical impact (CCI) model of TBI was

BACKGROUND: Thousands of children, especially poor children living in deteriorated urban housing, are exposed to enough lead to produce cognitive impairment. It is not known whether treatment to reduce blood lead levels prevents or reduces such impairment.
METHODS: We enrolled 780 children with blood lead levels of 20 to 44 microg per deciliter (1.0 to 2.1 micromol per liter) in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial of up to three 26-day courses of treatment with succimer, a lead chelator that is administered orally. The children lived in deteriorating inner-city housing and we

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive biases contribute to symptoms of depression in both its primary diagnosis and comorbid expressions. Exploring the module-specific effects of Metacognitive Training for Depression (D-MCT) in patients with comorbid depression offers valuable insights into how the various D-MCT modules address shared mechanisms, paving the way for a better understanding of how it works for these patients.
METHOD: Participants with primarily comorbid depression were recruited on a specialized ward for OCD and anxiety-related disorders (N = 108). The study investigated the session-specific eff

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity is known to positively influence cognitive performance. For adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the relationship between physical activity levels and cognitive performance is unknown. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine if cognitive performance [as measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)] of people living in the community with MCI is associated with their physical activity levels or sedentary behaviour.
METHODS: ActivPAL™ accelerometers were used to objectively measure physical activity and sedentary behaviour for seven full days

This study evaluated the influence of 12-month affective and anxiety disorders on treatment outcomes for adult problem gamblers in routine cognitive-behavioural therapy. A cohort study at a state-wide gambling therapy service in South Australia. Primary outcome measure was rated by participants using victorian gambling screen (VGS) 'harm to self' sub-scale with validated cut score 21+ (score range 0-60) indicative of problem gambling behaviour. Secondary outcome measure was Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS). Independent variable was severity of affective and anxiety disorders based on Ke

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive bias modification for interpretation, a computerized program which manipulates biased interpretations, has shown therapeutic promise, including evidence that negatively biased interpretations can be reduced, leading to corresponding improvements in symptoms. Cognitive bias modification for cognitive errors (CBM-errors) is a second generation CBM-I procedure which manipulates seven types of cognitive error and is especially relevant to depressive cognition. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the effects of the CBM-errors manipulation would be e
