Prevalence of tuberculosis infection and its relationship to stunting in children (under five years) household contact with new tuberculosis cases.

BACKGROUND: Children who inhabit the same house with tuberculosis (TB) patients are at high risk for infection and illness with TB. Nutritional status (stunting) in children is related to the child's ability to withstand MTB (Mycobacterium Tuberculosis). This study aims to estimated the prevalence of tuberculosis infection and its relationship to stunting in children (under five years) with household contact (HHC) with new TB cases. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was implemented. Conducted in July 2018-April 2019 at 13 Public Health Center in Makassar City. The sample size was calculated u

MAIT cells are functionally impaired in a Mauritian cynomolgus macaque model of SIV and Mtb co-infection.

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells can recognize and respond to some bacterially infected cells. Several in vitro and in vivo models of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection suggest that MAIT cells can contribute to control of Mtb, but these studies are often cross-sectional and use peripheral blood cells. Whether MAIT cells are recruited to Mtb-affected granulomas and lymph nodes (LNs) during early Mtb infection and what purpose they might serve there is less well understood. Furthermore, whether HIV/SIV infection impairs MAIT cell frequency or function at the sites of Mtb repli

Description of a new hepatitis C risk assessment tool.

BACKGROUND: Because of the low prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in the general population, mass screening would be expensive and of low yield. Some researchers advocate targeted screening of persons at elevated HCV risk. METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to develop a patient-administered tool to assess HCV infection risk. Two hundred seven patients with unknown HCV status from a general medicine practice and 222 HCV-positive patients from a hepatology practice completed a 72-item survey about demographic, social, and clinical risk factors for HCV infection. General medi

Rapid diagnostic tests for the detection of recent dengue infections: An evaluation of six kits on clinical specimens.

INTRODUCTION: Early and rapid confirmation of dengue infections strengthens disease surveillance program and are critical to the success of vector control measures. Rapid diagnostics tests (RDTs) are increasingly used to confirm recent dengue infections due to their ease of use and short turnaround time for results. Several studies undertaken in dengue-endemic Southeast Asia have reported the performance of RDTs against enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and virus isolation methods. However, few studies have compared multiple RDT

Hepatitis C Co-infection Among Pregnant Women With Syphilis in West Virginia, 2019-2023.

Syphilis and hepatitis C virus (HCV) rates have increased among women of childbearing age. Given the potential for vertical transmission of both infections, we examined syphilis and HCV co-infection among pregnant women in West Virginia (2019-2023). Public health surveillance data for syphilis and HCV were cross-referenced to identify co-infections. Of the 161 pregnant women with syphilis, 42.9% had a past or present HCV infection. Compared with those without HCV, a greater proportion of women with past or present HCV self-reported incarceration (21.7% vs 5.4%) and drug use (50.7% vs 15.2%) du

Rocahepevirus ratti: An underrecognised cause of acute hepatitis.

Zoonoses are responsible for many of all emerging infectious diseases as well as for those already established. Rocahepevirus ratti is a rat-originated virus related to the hepatitis E virus (Paslahepevirus balayani) but highly divergent genetically from this, with a high cross-species infection potential and zoonotic transmission. It can infect humans, leading to acute hepatitis, and is primarily transmitted through the consumption of contaminated water. Rocahepevirus ratti was first discovered in Germany in 2010. The first human case was described in 2017 in Hong Kong in an immune-compromise

Seroprevalance of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in Bulgarian livestock.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne zoonotic disease. Over the past decade, CCHF cases in humans have emerged in Turkey and reemerged in the Balkan countries, Ukraine and Tajikistan. Occupational contact with infected livestock has been recognized as a common cause of the disease. A cross-sectional seroprevalence study in livestock was conducted in farming communities of an endemic area in Bulgaria, southeastern Europe. Overall, 72% of the tested animals were positive for IgG antibodies to CCHF virus. By the time the animals were one-year old almost 50% had serologic eviden

[Immunoglobulin G avidity in infectious diseases].

The paper reviews results reached so far about avidity of immunoglobulins G in viral, parasitic and bacterial infectious diseases. The general introductory part begins with explanation of immunologic basis in maturation of avidity of immunoglobulins G and proceeds up to a survey of methods used for the determination of avidity. It also deals with the modes of evaluation in these methods and comments on their advantages and disadvantages. The part devoted to individual infectious diseases brings the most important information about avidity of immunoglobulins G in specific infections, especially

Differential suppression of experimental allergic diseases in rats infected with trypanosomes.

PVG/c rats, infected 3 days previously with 10(3) Trypanosoma brucei brucei S.42 organisms failed to develop adjuvant disease in response to an intradermal inoculation of mycobacterial adjuvant. By contrast, similarly infected rats, immunized with heterologous brain and spinal cord in Freund's complete adjuvant with pertussis vaccine as a secondary adjuvant, developed clinical signs of allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) at least as severe as those in uninfected rats. Delayed hypersensitivity reactions to PPD were depressed in trypanosome-infected, adjuvant-injected rats, as were the reactions to

An unusual presentation of right coronary artery fistula.

A four year old girl with infective endocarditis had unexplained facial swelling. Cross sectional echocardiography showed that a large right coronary artery fistula to the right atrium was obstructing the distal superior vena cava. The diagnosis was confirmed by cardiac catheterisation and at operation. The child was symptom free one year after operation.

Nanoparticle-Cross-Linked Smart Responsive Hydrogels for Antimicrobial, Anti-Inflammatory, and Antioxidant Treatment of Diabetic Wounds.

Infected diabetic wounds are complicated by bacterial infection, oxidative stress, and hyperglycemia, limiting conventional monotherapies. Combination therapies suffer from uncontrolled release and poor responsiveness to pathological cues. Here, we report a nanoparticle-cross-linked hydrogel that integrates structural integrity with environment-triggered delivery. We utilized self-assembled epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-tobramycin (TOB) nanoparticles as dynamic cross-linkers within a phenylboronic acid-modified gelatin network. The engineered system provides dual-stage responsiveness: the hy

Nepal's vulnerability to Nipah virus transmission: an urgent call for preparedness.

The confirmation of two Nipah virus (NiV) infections among healthcare workers in West Bengal, India, in December 2025 highlights the ongoing regional threat of this highly contagious zoonotic pathogen and the risk of nosocomial transmission before clinical suspicion. Increasing reports of human-to-human transmission in South Asia call for stronger preparedness efforts in neighboring countries. Nepal is particularly vulnerable due to its open border with India, high population mobility, ecological suitability for Petropus bat reservoirs, mixed livestock farming, limited surveillance, and diagno

Hendra virus: research progress on a bat-borne threat lurking at the human-animal interface.

Hendra virus (HeV) is a highly lethal zoonotic henipavirus that has caused recurrent cross-species spillover events in Australia since 1994. Its capacity for cross-species spillover, together with its tropism for vascular endothelial and neural tissues, makes HeV important to veterinary medicine and public health. Flying foxes are the natural reservoir hosts, and horses act as intermediate and amplifying hosts through which all confirmed human infections have occurred. Detection of antibodies and viral RNA from related henipaviruses in Southeast Asian bats indicates regional henipavirus divers

Chimeric hemagglutinin and M2 mRNA vaccine for broad influenza subtype protection.

Since multiple and unpredicted influenza viruses cause seasonal epidemics and even high-risk pandemics, developing a universal influenza vaccine is essential to provide broad protection against various influenza subtypes. Combined with the mRNA lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated (mRNA-LNP) vaccine platform and chimeric immunogen strategy, we developed a novel cocktail mRNA vaccine encoding chimeric HAs (cH5/1-BV, cH7/3) and intact M2 (termed Fluaxe), which confers broad protection against major circulating IAVs and IBVs, as well as highly pathogenic avian influenza. Two-dose intramuscular immuniz

Arbovirus evolution in vivo is constrained by host alternation.

The intrinsic plasticity of RNA viruses can facilitate host range changes that lead to epidemics. However, evolutionary processes promoting cross-species transfers are poorly defined, especially for arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses). In theory, cross species transfers by arboviruses may be constrained by their alternating infection of disparate hosts, where optimal replication in one host involves a fitness tradeoff for the other. Accordingly, freeing arboviruses from alternate replication via specialization in a single host should accelerate adaptation. This hypothesis has been tested by
