BACKGROUND: Coronary artery bypass grafting for atherosclerotic heart disease is commonly performed throughout the world. Complications of coronary artery bypass grafting include saphenous neuralgia due to injury to the saphenous nerve during harvest of the saphenous vein. Dermatologic complications of coronary revascularization are infrequently reported and include an eruption overlying the vein donor-site scar.

We report a case of primary irritant contact dermatitis caused by an organostannic insecticide, tributyl tin phthalate, which has been thought to be stable and safe. A factory worker has been in contact with raw tributyl tin phthalate on one leg. Soon after taking a hot-water bath, he developed severely painful erythema on this leg. Patch tests and chemical analysis revealed that hot water hydrolyzed tributyl tin phthalate and produced concentrated phthalic acid. Since phthalic acid, a weak acid, was then concentrated, an acute irritant reaction appeared in this patient.

A group of 16 male patients with infertility had dermatitis of the scrotum and groins giving lichenified oedematous skin; the resulting thickening and loss of rugosity produced a characteristic appearance that we have termed wash leather scrotum. Treatment of the dermatosis resulted in an improvement in sperm count and motility in most patients, and 5 couples produced one or more pregnancies.

Based on clinical features, infantile seborrheic dermatitis (ISD) can be classified as follows: true seborrheic dermatitis (SD), psoriasiform seborrheic dermatitis (Psor SD), and erythrodermic seborrheic dermatitis. Pemphigus foliaceus is an uncommon dermatologic disorder occurring in several species and has been reported in horses during the past decade. We succeeded in reproducing an eczematous lesion on the apparently normal skin of a patient with atopic dermatitis by scratching and continuous application of an ointment containing ferritin-labelled mite antigen. Percutaneous entry of mite antigen was demonstrated in skin biopsies by Fe-staining. Scratched skin first showed an urticarial reaction typical of type I allergy which later changed into an eczematous reaction typical of type IV allergy. This change was also shown histologically.

2 case reports are given of patients with positive patch test reactions to clobetasol propionate. One of the patients also reacted to clobetasone butyrate. 30 other steroids that were chemically very closely related to these two 21-chloro-9-alpha-fluoro-corticosteroids, were patch test negative. The literature on contact dermatitis reactions to corticosteroids is reviewed.

Seven workers exposed to ultraviolet printing inks developed contact dermatitis. Six cases were allergic and one irritant. A urethane acrylate resin accounted for five cases of sensitisation, one of which was also sensitive to pentaerythritol triacrylate and another also to an epoxy acrylate resin. The cutaneous metabolism of exogenous arachidonic acid and endoperoxide (PGH2) to prostaglandins and hydroxy-fatty acids was investigated in experimental contact dermatitis in guinea pigs and compared to normal skin, unsensitized animals treated with the allergen dinitrochlorobenzene, and Trafuril-induced irritant dermatitis. The main alterations of cutaneous arachidonate metabolism in contact dermatitis comprise: (1) an inhibition of PGD2 synthesis; (2) a switch from predominant PGD2 production to a predominance of PGE2 and (3) a marked inhibition of the lipoxygenase activity.

To determine the significance of circulating immune complexes in dermatitis herpetiformis, serum samples from thirty patients with active disease were tested by a C1q binding radioassay, while serum samples from twenty-one of these patients were tested by a monoclonal rheumatoid factor (mRF) inhibition radioassay. Sera from forty-six patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) were examined for anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) by the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test and by a simple new immunofluorescent (IF) test. Eight patients suffering from pigmented contact dermatitis caused by the commerical Brilliant Lake Red R were patch tested with purified Sudan I and its several chemical analogues.
