Canines erupted through grafted alveolar cleft defects in patients with alveolar clefts: a pulp testing evaluation study.

An electric pulp tester (EPT) was used to evaluate the pulpal response of erupted canines in 75 patients: 16 patients with unilateral cleft palate who received autogenous bone grafts to correct their alveolar cleft defects before canine eruption; 35 patients without cleft palate whose canines erupted spontaneously, but who required orthodontic treatment for alignment; and 24 patients without clefts whose canines required surgical uncovering and orthodontic assistance for eruption. Thirty-one percent of the erupted canines in the patients with grafted unilateral clefts did not respond to EPT, w

Thalamic connections of the caudal part of the posterior parietal cortex differ from the rostral part in galagos (Otolemur garnettii).

In this study, thalamic connections of the caudal part of the posterior parietal cortex (PPCc) are described and compared to connections of the rostral part of PPC (PPCr) in strepsirrhine galagos. PPC of galagos is divided into two parts, PPCr and PPCc, based on the responsiveness to electrical stimulation. Stimulation of PPC with long trains of electrical pulses evokes different types of ethologically relevant movements from different subregions ("domains") of PPCr, while it fails to evoke any movements from PPCc. Anatomical tracers were placed in both dorsal and ventral divisions of PPCc to

A Spectrum of Intraoperative and Postoperative Complications of Cochlear Implants: A Critical Review.

A cochlear implant is a neuroprosthetic, electrical device that is developed for the treatment of patients who have sensory hearing loss. It directly stimulates the hearing nerve by bypassing the injured or damaged sensory receptors, the hair cells. This implant is directly placed in the inner ear. It is an electronic device which is proved to be very useful in patients with sensorineural hearing loss. This implant consists of a speech processor (externally present), which takes up the sound; transforms it into digital signals, and then internal components take it to convert it into electrical

Common fronto-temporal effective connectivity in humans and monkeys.

Human brain pathways supporting language and declarative memory are thought to have differentiated substantially during evolution. However, cross-species comparisons are missing on site-specific effective connectivity between regions important for cognition. We harnessed functional imaging to visualize the effects of direct electrical brain stimulation in macaque monkeys and human neurosurgery patients. We discovered comparable effective connectivity between caudal auditory cortex and both ventro-lateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC, including area 44) and parahippocampal cortex in both species. H

Modeled auditory nerve responses to amplitude modulated cochlear implant stimulation.

Cochlear implants encode speech information by stimulating the auditory nerve with amplitude-modulated pulse trains. A computer model of the auditory nerve's response to electrical stimulation can be used to evaluate different approaches to improving CI patients' perception. In this paper a computationally efficient stochastic and adaptive auditory nerve model was used to investigate full nerve responses to amplitude-modulated electrical pulse trains. The model was validated for nerve responses to AM pulse trains via comparison with animal data. The influence of different parameters, such as a

Electromyography as a new means of navigation during endotracheal intubation.

This study tested a method of using rapid analysis of electromyographic response patterns to electrical stimulation to enable real-time navigation during endotracheal intubation. An electromyographic response detection device was constructed and integrated into a standard endotracheal tube. The rebound rates of the response voltages were measured in the trachea and oesophagus after stimulation in an acute study performed in three freshly euthanized male Suffolk sheep. In a blind study, a physician attempted to identify the tissue type solely from the electrical response signals. In the acute s

Effects of pharmacological AMP deaminase inhibition and Ampd1 deletion on nucleotide levels and AMPK activation in contracting skeletal muscle.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays a central role in regulating metabolism and energy homeostasis. It achieves its function by sensing fluctuations in the AMP:ATP ratio. AMP deaminase (AMPD) converts AMP into IMP, and the AMPD1 isoenzyme is expressed in skeletal muscles. Here, effects of pharmacological inhibition and genetic deletion of AMPD were examined in contracting skeletal muscles. Pharmacological AMPD inhibition potentiated rises in AMP, AMP:ATP ratio, AMPK Thr172, and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) Ser218 phosphorylation induced by electrical stimulation, without affecting glucos

Perception of Mandarin Chinese with cochlear implants using enhanced temporal pitch cues.

A cochlear implant (CI) signal processing strategy named F0 modulation (F0mod) was compared with the advanced combination encoder (ACE) strategy in a group of four post-lingually deafened Mandarin Chinese speaking CI listeners. F0 provides an enhanced temporal pitch cue by amplitude modulating the multichannel electrical stimulation pattern at the fundamental frequency (F0) of the incoming speech signal. Word and sentence recognition tests were carried out in quiet and in noise. The responses for the word-recognition test were further segmented into phoneme and tone scores. Off-line implementa

Optimization and evaluation of a proportional derivative controller for planar arm movement.

In most clinical applications of functional electrical stimulation (FES), the timing and amplitude of electrical stimuli have been controlled by open-loop pattern generators. The control of upper extremity reaching movements, however, will require feedback control to achieve the required precision. Here we present three controllers using proportional derivative (PD) feedback to stimulate six arm muscles, using two joint angle sensors. Controllers were first optimized and then evaluated on a computational arm model that includes musculoskeletal dynamics. Feedback gains were optimized by minimiz

Hypothalamic orexins/hypocretins as regulators of breathing.

It was suggested half a century ago that electrical impulses from the lateral hypothalamic area stimulate breathing. It is now emerging that these effects may be mediated, at least in part, by neurons containing orexin neuropeptides (also known as hypocretins). These cells promote wakefulness and consciousness, and their loss results in narcolepsy. Recent data also show that orexin neurons directly project to respiratory centres in the brainstem, which express orexin receptors, and where injection of orexin stimulates breathing. Because orexin neurons receive inputs that signal metabolic, slee

L-NAME pre-treatment partially inhibits the agmatine-evoked depression of the electrically induced twitch contraction of isolated rat vas deferens.

The effect of the putative endogenous ligand for alpha(2)-adrenoceptors and imidazoline receptors agmatine was studied in sympathetic neurotransmission in the rat epididymal vas deferens. Tissues were obtained from N(varpi)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME)-treated or normal animals and were contracted by electrical stimulation or by exogenous adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP). In the electrically stimulated epididymal end, agmatine produced an inhibitory effect on twitch contraction that was partially reversed in l-NAME-treated animals, whereas the inhibition produced by clonidine was not

Effects of ergotamine on cardiovascular catecholamine receptors in the pithed rat.

1. Ergotamine (3-10 micrograms/kg) inhibited the electrical stimulation-induced pressor and cardiac responses without modifying pressor responses of noradrenaline and tyramine in the pithed rat. 2. Yohimbine (0.3 mg/kg) partially prevented the ergotamine cardiac and vascular inhibitory effects but sulpiride (0.3 mg/kg) only prevented it at vascular level. Both antagonists together abolished the ergotamine inhibition of electrical stimulation-induced pressor responses. 3. The cumulative dose-response curve of ergotamine (1-100 micrograms/kg) vasoconstrictor effects was partially inhibited to th

Changes in the vascular reactivity of the isolated tail arteries of spontaneous and renovascular hypertensive rats to endogenous and exogenous noradrenaline.

We have investigated the changes in the responses to noradrenaline of isolated tail arteries of spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and renovascular hypertensive rats (Wistar-Kyoto: two-kidney, one-clip model, WKY:2K1C) compared with normotensive (Wistar-Kyoto, WKY) rats. Renovascular hypertension was induced by 4 weeks' unilateral renal artery clipping. Arteries were vasoconstricted with exogenous noradrenaline, electrical field stimulation or high potassium. The effects of the latter two stimuli were abolished by reserpine and so were presumably dependent on the presence of endogenous noradrena

A pharmacological analysis of neurally induced inhibition of carotid body chemoreceptor activity in cats.

Experiments were performed to determine the mechanism by which centrifugal impulses in the carotid sinus nerve (CSN) reduce the frequency of impulse traffic in afferent chemoreceptor fibers from the carotid body in cats. Recordings of chemoreceptor activity were made from single- or few-fiber preparations dissected off the CSN, while the remainder of the CSN was stimulated electrically to produce neurally induced inhibition of chemoreceptor activity. Various drugs were injected either intravenously or directly into the arterial blood supply to the carotid body. We found that catecholamines (do

Oral Magnetoelectric Neuroimmunomodulation via the Gut-Brain-Spleen-Heart Axis for Noninvasive Atrial Fibrillation Therapy.

Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common cardiac arrhythmia, is closely associated with autonomic imbalance and inflammation. While low-level vagus nerve stimulation (LL-VNS) offers therapeutic benefits, its clinical application is limited by the need for surgical implants. Here, we present a noninvasive, orally delivered magnetoelectric neuroimmunomodulation platform that targets the gut-brain-spleen-heart axis to deliver LL-VNS for AF therapy. The platform comprises ingestible microparticles (MPs) embedding magnetostrictive Fe3O4@BaTiO3 nanogenerators (FO@BTO NGs) within a conductive matrix

3D-Printed Electroanatomic Twins of Cadaveric Cochleae: A Platform for Cochlear Implant Testing.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants (CIs) can restore hearing to individuals with severe deafness, yet clinical outcomes vary widely because it remains difficult to predict how electrical currents interact with the unique anatomy of each cochlea. A central challenge in auditory rehabilitation is the lack of experimental systems that capture both the anatomical fidelity and the electrical properties of the human cochlea. To address this need, we developed electroanatomic twins: three-dimensional, 3D printed models of human cochleae that incorporate anatomically accurate features of the otic capsule a

Posttraumatic headache: pain related evoked potentials (PREP) and conditioned pain modulation (CPM) to assess the pain modulatory function.

Posttraumatic headache (PTH) is common following traumatic brain injury and impacts quality of life. We investigated descending pain modulation as one possible mechanism for PTH and correlated it to clinical measures. Pain-related evoked potentials (PREP) were recorded in 26 PTH-patients and 20 controls after electrical stimulation at the right hand and forehead with concentric surface electrodes. Conditioned pain modulation (CPM) was assessed using painful cutaneous electric stimulation (PCES) on the right hand as test stimulus and immersion of the left hand into 10 °C-cold water bath as cond…

Striking Neurochemical and Behavioral Differences in the Mode of Action of Selegiline and Rasagiline.

Selegiline and rasagiline are two selective monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) inhibitors used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. In their clinical application, however, differences in L-dopa-sparing potencies have been observed. The aim of this study was to find neurochemical and behavioral explanations for the antiparkinsonian effects of these drugs. We found that selegiline possesses a dopaminergic enhancer effect: it stimulated the electrically induced [3H]dopamine release without influencing the resting [3H]dopamine release from rat striatal slices in 10-10-10-9 mol/L concentrations. Treatment of fecal incontinence: state of the science summary for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases workshop.

This is the second of a two-part summary of a National Institutes of Health conference on fecal incontinence (FI) that summarizes current treatments and identifies research priorities. Conservative medical management consisting of patient education, fiber supplements or antidiarrheals, behavioral techniques such as scheduled toileting, and pelvic floor exercises restores continence in up to 25% of patients. Biofeedback, often recommended as first-line treatment after conservative management fails, produces satisfaction with treatment in up to 76% and continence in 55%; however, outcomes depend
