Deficits in facial emotion recognition in temporal lobe epilepsy: Comprehensive understanding from cognitive neuroscience perspectives.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a key aspect of social cognition, crucial for social interactions. Recent studies have focused on deficits in FER among patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and the factors influencing these deficits. Research suggests that brain damage caused by epilepsy may lead to specific impairments in recognizing emotions, with lateralization of epilepsy and the emotional intensity of stimuli playing important roles. Additionally, interactions between emotion type, emotional intensity, and the age of onset of epilepsy may contribute to these recognition deficits.…

Associations of perceived stress with depression in medical students: the mediating role of rumination and the moderating role of emotional intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Medical students have become a group with a high prevalence of depression and are particularly vulnerable to it. Recognizing the factors affecting depression among medical students is crucial. This study was aimed at exploring the effects of perceived stress on medical students' depression under the mediating role of the rumination and the moderating role of the emotional intelligence. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 648 medical students in XX Province, XX (blind review). Participants provided responses to measures of perceived stress, rumination, emotional intelligence, and

Temporal dynamics of CBT emotion regulation training in patients with major depression using ecological momentary assessment.

Rumination is known to have a negative impact on both the process of psychotherapy as well as the development of depressive symptoms and even the probability of relapses in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Therefore, treatment approaches focusing on strategies to overcome rumination have been developed over the last decades, e.g., by improving emotion regulation. However, little is yet known about the specific mechanisms of action of psychotherapy between sessions, and in particular analyses of time-dependent changes are scarce. Therefore, we used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to colle

Same movies, different stories: aberrant brain state dynamics during naturalistic emotional stimuli in depression.

BACKGROUND: Affective social interaction relies on aligning emotional and cognitive responses with others, reflected in synchronized neural network states. Major depressive disorder (MDD), characterized by social withdrawal and emotional isolation, may impair this capacity. This study aimed to test whether individuals with first-episode, drug-naïve MDD exhibit disrupted shared neural representations during naturalistic emotional experiences, and to identify which specific brain-state dynamics underlie such alterations. METHODS: Participants with MDD (n = 55) and healthy controls (HCs, n = 62)

Mental health in traumatically bereaved individuals: The role of loss-related, personal, interpersonal, and emotion regulation factors.

The traumatic loss of a loved one is among the most common traumatic events worldwide and represents a public mental health concern. This study assessed the lifetime prevalence of such losses in a nationally representative sample of Icelandic adults. Among traumatically bereaved individuals in this sample (N = 1,002; 56.4% women, 43.6% men), a hierarchical structural equation model was used to examine loss-related, personal, interpersonal, and emotion regulation factors associated with psychological distress. The overall prevalence of exposure to traumatic loss was high (56.7%). Significant ri

Patterns of emotional availability, psychopathology, and sociodemographic risk factors among mothers with substance use disorders and their children.

Parental substance use disorder (SUD) constitutes a major public health problem and a well-known risk condition for child development, largely due to exposure to dysfunctional caregiving practices, ranging from less-than-optimal maternal sensitivity to severe forms of abuse or neglect. However, most research focused on specific parenting features or on maternal and child behaviors separately, which may not be representative of the quality of their relationship as a whole. The aim of this study was to identify patterns of dyadic emotional availability and their association with different risk f

The Path from Childhood Emotional Maltreatment to Disordered Eating Behaviors: The Role of Reflective Functioning and Food Addiction.

Introduction: Childhood emotional maltreatment, which includes emotional abuse and neglect, has been identified as a significant risk factor for the development of disordered eating behaviors related to overeating and reduced dietary control. At the same time, the literature suggests that childhood emotional maltreatment appears to be linked to deficits in reflective functioning which, in turn, may increase vulnerability to dysregulated, impulsive, and addictive behaviors. However, to date, the role of a key factor, such as food addiction (FA), within this model has not yet been investigated.

A Narrative Review of the Co-Occurrence and Interaction of Childhood Emotional Neglect and Overprotection in Developmental Pathways to Disordered Eating.

Childhood emotional neglect and parental overprotection are two subtle yet influential caregiving patterns that shape emotional, relational, and self-regulatory development. Though they are often examined separately, emerging research suggests that they may act independently and together to increase vulnerability to disordered eating. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary theoretical and empirical contributions to clarify how emotional neglect and overprotection affect pathways related to emotion regulation, attachment processes, and self-concept development. The review introduces the

Implications of unique and shared variance of interparental conflict and child emotional insecurity through parental depressive symptomology.

The goal of this study was to unpack processes that may lead to child emotional insecurity. Guided by the emotional security theory (EST/EST-R), we examined the mediational role of parental depressive symptomology between interparental conflict (IPC), both constructive and destructive, and child emotional insecurity at age 36-months. We partitioned unique variance of IPC from shared using an extension of the common fate model. We used two-wave data from the Building Strong Families project, which consisted of racially diverse couples/parents (N = 4,424) who were low income and unmarried at the

Positive resonance: Successful interpersonal emotion regulation facilitated relationship closeness by enhanced inter-brain synchronization.

Interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) refers to the dynamic process where a regulator employs specific strategies to alleviate a target's distress. It remains unclear whether successful IER could facilitate interpersonal relationship closeness (IRC). The present study aimed to explore whether successful IER, based on two typical strategies-cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES)-for down-regulating the target's negative emotions, could enhance IRC among friend dyads, and to identify the underlying neural correlates of this process using functional near-infrared spectroscopy…

Intra- versus interpersonal emotion regulation: Associations with affect, relationship quality and closeness, and biological markers of stress.

Past research has focused on emotion regulation (ER) as an intrapersonal endeavor (managing one's own emotions), leaving many questions unanswered about interpersonal emotion regulation (IER; receiving support from another person to regulate one's emotions). This study sought to understand the effects of two common IER strategies (corumination, codistraction) by comparing them with each other and their intrapersonal counterparts (rumination, distraction) on negative and positive affect, relationship quality and closeness, and biological stress responses (i.e., cortisol and salivary alpha-amyla…

The impact of physical activities on adolescents' rule consciousness: the chain mediation effect of friendship quality and emotional intelligence.

INTRODUCTION: With the increasing emphasis on the development of adolescents' character and behavior in modern society, how to effectively cultivate adolescents' rule awareness has become a pressing issue in the field of education. Despite the increasing emphasis on developing adolescents' character and behavior, educators face significant challenges in cultivating rule awareness. Traditional educational practices often fall short in integrating physical activity with socio-emotional learning, and they struggle to capture the complex dynamics influencing rule adherence. Rule awareness is not o

Adolescents' emotional support to friends and family: A resiliency-promoting factor amidst and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Helping others may serve as a resiliency-promoting factor for adolescents during challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study examined short- and long-term within-person associations between providing emotional support and mood (i.e., vigor) among adolescents. We used data from an eight-wave longitudinal study with 6 months in-between timepoints (May 2020 and December 2023) among 2,430 adolescents aged 12-25. We performed random intercept cross-lagged panel models to examine daily and half-yearly lagged associations between emotional support and vigor and tested how sens
