INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the ratio of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) to moderate and severe TBI, about the time that elapses until primary care is given, about the number of patients requiring immediate surgery and about the early outcome and the costs.
METHOD: In a prospective study two regions taken as model examples were investigated: the City of Hanover with its surrounding catchment area and Münster with its regions.
RESULTS: From 1 March 2000 until 28 February 2001 all patients were recruited who were admitted to a hospital emergency department due to a TBI; 6783 patients

OBJECT: Local administration of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) has been shown to increase the rate of axon regeneration in crush-injured and freeze-injured rat sciatic nerves. Local administration of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been also shown to have a measurable effect on facial nerve regeneration after transection in a rat model. The objective of the study was to compare the effects of locally administered IGF-I and PRP on the parameters of the Sciatic Function Index (SFI), sensory function (SF), axon count, and myelin thickness/axon diameter ratio (G-ratio) in a rat model of crush

Due to various reasons, localized neural lesions following tonsillectomy are presumably an under-reported complication in the literature. This study was undertaken to compile our experiences including a literature review to disseminate useful insights in the etiology and prognosis of this rare entity. A retrospective chart review of expert reports written by at least one of the authors for malpractice claims in relation to tonsillectomy was undertaken. Additionally, a retrospective analysis of 648 patient documents that had undergone tonsillectomy in 2001 at our institution and a comprehensive

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Tonsillectomy is among the most commonly performed procedures. As with any surgery, head and neck surgeons must be aware of possible complications and their potential affects. At our smell and taste center, we have been referred several patients in a 6-month period with the complaint of taste distortion after tonsillectomy. We report in this article a patient that complains of taste distortion after a right tonsillectomy for unilateral tonsillar hypertrophy.
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study documenting taste distortion after tonsillectomy using clinical, subjective, and

Integrating real-time biometric monitoring into sports science is increasingly important for optimizing athletic performance and reducing injury risk. However, many existing systems have limited capacity to accurately combine data from multiple biometric sources. This study evaluated the Dynamic Multisensor Fusion (DMSFC) classifier for analyzing physiological and functional data collected from multiple biometric modalities, including electrocardiography (ECG), fingerprint measurements, and facial recognition. A multimodal biometric framework based on DMSFC was developed to monitor and classif

The infraorbital nerve (ION) can easily be damaged by orbital trauma and periorbital surgical manipulations, due to its abutment to the orbital floor. Anatomic variability of the ION and surrounding structures has infrequently been documented. The aim of this study is to give precise anatomical knowledge about the ION with surrounding structures, to avoid iatrogenic injury of the ION during periorbital procedures.Forty orbits of 40 skull subjects (20 males and 20 females) were studied to analyze structures around the ION. The authors located the ION, infraorbital canal/groove (IOC/G), and infr

OBJECTIVE: Soft tissue reconstruction with a temporoparietal fascial flap (TPFF).
INDICATIONS: Defect coverage with thin, pliable, and well-vascularized tissue. A bilayered TPFF provides a gliding surface in tendon reconstruction. Further options include TPFF harvest with overlying skin or subjacent bone for composite tissue reconstruction or the application as a sensate local fascial flap. Maximum defect dimensions: 17 × 14 cm.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Absolute: prior injury to the flap or flap pedicle, temporal arteritis, Moyamoya syndrome, defects with volume deficit. Relative: alopecia along t

Loss or alteration of taste is a rare phenomenon that may be idiopathic or may be caused by head trauma, medication use or systemic and local factors including various invasive dental procedures resulting in nerve damage. We present an unusual case of generalized taste change following an oral surgical procedure. The case is presented to enhance understanding of taste disorders and their relation to a localized traumatic event. Causative factors and management strategies are also reviewed. Taste change, encompassing loss (ageusia) or alteration (dysgeusia) of taste, is a rare phenomenon that m

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 37-year-old woman who was not wearing a seat-belt while driving a car had a head-on collision at 70 km/h. On arrival of the emergency physician she was awake and responsive but complained of pain with bruising over the sternum and the epigastrium. Pressure on the sternum was painful. Arterial pressure was 95/60 mm Hg, heart rate 112/min. On admission the heart sounds were unremarkable and peripheral pulses normal. Vesicular sounds were heard over both lungs. In addition to multiple facial abrasions voluntary movements were impaired and the right knee-joint was

Since December 2019, the medical staff fighting against COVID-19 frequently reported the device-related pressure injury (DRPI) caused by personal protective equipment (PPE). We conducted a cross-sectional survey online to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of DRPI among medical staff. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to explore the risk factors associated with DRPI. A total of 4308 participants were collected and 4306 participants were valid from 161 hospitals in China. The overall prevalence of DRPI caused by PPE among medical staff was 30.03%

INTRODUCTION: Burn injuries can present with catastrophic physical and psychiatric harm with extensive, long-term sequelae. The pediatric population may especially be at-risk given this population's early neurocognitive and behavioral state of development. Innovations in treatment modalities and the development of evidence-based guidelines have helped mitigate burn morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. Unfortunately, a surprising dearth of literature identifies risk-factors, epidemiological data, injury mechanisms, and prognostic factors within the pediatric population in the se

Often, complex, optimal management of the orbital fracture is directly dependent on thorough initial evaluation, correct injury assessment, and timely initiation of chosen therapy. Most often, secondary to assault or motor vehicle collision, these fractures are frequently associated with additional traumatic injury. With recent advances in imaging, alloplastic materials, and bone fixation technology, the evolution of orbital fracture management now enables reconstruction of even the most severe injuries.

We performed a retrospective review of 44 patients with middle ear injury incurred through the external auditory canal. Twenty-two of the 44 patients had presented to our center within 1 month of their injury (early group), and 22 presented later (delayed group); the mean interval from the time of the trauma to presentation was 6 days in the early group and 7 years in the delayed group. The causes of injury were penetrating trauma (70% of cases), thermal insults (20%), and explosive and nonexplosive blasts (9%). Purulent otorrhea, cholesteatoma, and ossicular discontinuity were more common in

Blunt contusions, lacerations, and avulsion-type trauma are the most often reported nasal injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents. The nasal skeleton and soft tissues are frequently involved and may require surgical repair of the injuries. The primary reconstruction often requires the use of autogenous grafts, and secondary revision surgery may be necessary. The treatment may require a multidisciplinary surgical team or a single surgeon who knows how to manage the injury. Optimally, the reconstruction of nasal bone avulsions is performed primarily, using autogenous graft materials. This

From a study of a series of rabbits inoculated with two old strains of Treponema pallidum, it was found that localized infection of bones and tendons was of frequent occurrence and led to the formation of a variety of lesions. The bones usually involved were those of the face and the feet and legs. Most often the lesions arose from the periosteum but developed also within the bone or marrow cavities and at lines of epiphyseal union. Grossly, the periosteal lesions were of two types-one being a circumscribed, indurated, and nodular mass and the other a process of a more diffuse character. Histo
