Candida species have been implicated as significant contributors to morbidity in the neonatal period and are associated with 25-50% of mortality in invasive neonatal candidiasis. Peritoneal candidiasis, being paucisymptomatic, cannot often be correctly identified in a preterm neonate. The correct approach to diagnosis of neonatal peritoneal candidiasis is taking into account the epidemiology along with a strong clinical suspicion and appropriate timely diagnostic interventions. We report a case of fatal neonatal peritoneal candidiasis which was misdiagnosed as mucormycosis.

BACKGROUND: Purtscher's retinopathy and renal cortical necrosis are two rare vaso-occlusive complications of acute pancreatitis. Purtscher's retinopathy causes sudden impairment of vision, which was first reported in a patient with head trauma. Subsequently, it was also reported as a complication of acute pancreatitis and few other clinical conditions. Acute pancreatitis also rarely causes renal cortical necrosis leading to acute kidney injury. However, the simultaneous presence of both complications is rarely reported.

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. Because of its high case-fatality rate and apparent increase in areas of transmission, it is considered to be the rickettsial illness of primary public health interest. Cases of this disease have historically occurred in Southeastern Brazil. This article reports the first fatal case of BSF in Southern Brazil. This case high lights the importance of BSF to be considered as a differential diagnosis for acute hemorrhagic fever in areas where cases of BSF may not be expected.

A 76-year-old female patient was admitted to the Level I Emergency Department of University of Szeged with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. The clinical assessment with laboratory tests and radiological investigations confirmed severe sepsis associated with intravascular hemolysis and multiorgan failure and acute pancreatitis. On the abdominal CT, besides of other abnormalities, the presence of gas bubbles in the stomach, small intestines and liver were seen. The gastric alterations pointed to emphysematous gastritis. Despite of the medical treatment, the patient's condition quickly deterio

Profunda femoris artery aneurysms (PFAA) are very rare and easily overlooked. Currently, around 100 PFAA and 20 ruptured PFAA have been described in the literature. This is a report on a case of ruptured PFAA with thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm. A ligation of the profunda femoris artery (PFA) and a femoropopliteal supragenicular bypass with vascular prosthesis were performed in the surgical treatment, which showed good results on the further follow-ups. A month after the procedure the patient had a rupture of the thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm with fatal result. Therefore, it is recommende

A 19-yr-old female African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) presented with labored breathing and anorexia. Radiographs revealed soft-tissue density lesions in the left lung fields and fluid in the right. The penguin died during the night. Postmortem examination demonstrated multiple granulomas in the lungs and air sacs. The right coelom was filled with opaque fluid. Histopathology of the lung, liver, kidney, and spleen identified Mycobacterium as a primary disease etiology. Large numbers of acid fast-positive, rod-shaped bacteria were recognized on tissue staining. Mycobacterium genavense was det

BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is an aggressive lymphoma confined to the CNS. Although the pathogenesis of PCNSL in immunocompetent individuals remains unclear, there have been several case studies demonstrating the "sentinel" inflammatory lesions months before the manifestation of PCNSL. However, the pathologic relationship between the inflammatory lesions and subsequent PCNSL is still unknown.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 44-year-old immunocompetent woman who developed several cerebral and cerebellar lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A p

We report a 10-year-old Saudi girl who has Fanconi anemia (FA) and was admitted due to acute hemiplegia, of the right side. She had a previous attack of left side hemiplegia that resolved spontaneously. The brain magnetic resonance angiography showed a cerebrovascular pattern of moyamoya disease. She underwent partially matched related donor stem cell transplantation (SCT), but unfortunately died 3 months later with post SCT complications. The association of moyamoya disease with FA is uncommon, and is rarely reported in the literature. Although this condition may be acquired, it is considered

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are rare nervous tumors usually located in the posterior mediastinum in the paravertebral gutters. We report the case of a non-smoking 62-year-old man who was admitted with a 4 months history of cough, hoarseness and shortness of breath. Physical examination noted a superior vena cava syndrome. CT scan of the chest revealed a right anterior and middle mediastinal mass compressing the superior vena cava, the ascending aorta, the right pulmonary artery, invading the superior root of the pulmonary vein and the right auricle. Flexible bronchoscopy s

The clinical and histologic features of thyroid carcinoma in raccoon dogs have not been previously reported. Three of four raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) over 8 yr of age at the Nogeyama Zoological Gardens developed thyroid follicular cell carcinomas that were detected at necropsy. The affected raccoon dogs were rescued from the wild and were housed at the Nogeyama Zoological Gardens for 8 yr 8 mo, 8 yr 10 mo, and 10 yr 3 mo, respectively. Although all of them appeared lethargic and developed partial alopecia or desquamation of their skin, they did not display any other specific clini

A 42-year-old man with a history of sudden onset of severe headache followed by consciousness disturbance was brought to our hospital. Radiological examinations revealed subarachnoid hemorrhage, associated with rupture of a left vertebral artery dissecting aneurysm. Initially, internal trapping was attempted via the ipsilateral vertebral artery. However, the microcatheter could not be navigated through the true lumen to the distal side of the vertebral artery. Subsequently, therefore, the guiding catheter was placed in the right vertebral artery, and the microcatheter was retrogradely navigate

BACKGROUND: Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is a life-threatening infection that occurs predominantly in severely immunocompromised p … h a severe influenza virus infection. This combined Aspergillus and influenza infection often has a fatal outcome. An Aspergillus sputum culture should be taken seriously in patients with severe influenza pneumonia, and treatment should be considered early in the disease course.

Light-chain amyloidosis (AL) is the most common form of systemic amyloidosis and is associated with an underlying plasma cell dyscrasia. The disease is often difficult to recognize because of its broad range of manifestations and often vague symptoms. The clinical symptoms include proteinuria, hepatomegaly, heart failure and autonomic or sensory neuropathy. A 70-year-old man with a past medical history of sacroidosis and heart failure was admitted to hospital. He had breathlessness and swelling of his lower extremities. Among other symptoms the combination of transthoracic echo-cardiogram find
