The recent recognition that Q fever is endemic in Ontario and the known occupational risk of Q fever to research personnel working with sheep prompted a study to determine the prevalence of antibodies to the causative organism, Coxiella burnetti, in animals and staff at a Toronto animal research institute. Human sera from Lodwar (77 sera), Nzoia (841 sera), Masinga (251 sera), Laisamis (174 sera) and the Malindi/Kilifi area (556 sera) in Kenya were tested by indirect immunofluorescence for antibodies against Marburg, Ebola (Zaire and Sudan strains), Congo haemorrhagic fever, Rift Valley fever and Lassa viruses. Fever, infection, or both occurred at some time during hospitalization in 67% of patients on referral spinal cord injury service. A single cause of fever was generally found, with urinary tract and soft-tissue infections predominating; these responded well to appropriate management. Chest radiographs of 43 patients with Rocky Mountain spotted fever were reviewed to elucidate the frequency and types of involvement of the lower respiratory tract. The abnormal radiographic patterns included localized and diffuse infiltrates of both interstitial and alveolar type. Autopsies were performed in five cases, and findings in several of these are described to help provide radiologic-pathologic correlation. An association of lung involvement (as evidenced by diffuse infiltrates on chest radiographs) and increased mortality was demonstrated.

A case of scarlet fever studied in 1959 and caused by Staphylococcus aureus, phage type 52/52a/80 infection of a surgical burn is reported. The literature is reviewed and data are presented which indicate the distinct antigenicity of the erythrogenic toxins of staphylococci and group A streptococci. The patient developed neutralizing antibodies to staphylococcal toxin which disappeared ten months after infection. The similarity of the rashes and desquamation of the skin of several diseases caused by staphylococci indicate at least one common toxin.

Forty one cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever, confirmed by viral isolation, accompanied by neurological signs compatible to the diagnosis of acute encephalopathy were observed in 3 University Hospitals in Jakarta during the period November 1975 to December 1977. Two of these children showed typical signs and symptoms of Reye's syndrome confirmed by liver biopsy.
