A variety of age-related anatomic and functional alterations in the kidney have been described. Greenfield filters for prevention of pulmonary emboli may be placed in the inferior vena cava by surgical cutdown or by percutaneous insertion through the femoral or jugular veins. Long-term follow-up is presented of 73 patients suffering from the haemolytic-uraemic syndrome 10 years after the acute initial illness. During the period from August 1986 to August 1987, 50 patients underwent percutaneous placement of a Greenfield vena caval filter from the right femoral vein, left femoral vein, or right internal jugular vein at our institution.
