The Speech-Language Pathologists' Role in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury for Early Childhood-, Preschool-, and Elementary School-Age Children: Viewpoints on Guidelines From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Purpose Traumatic brain injury (TBI) impacts millions of children each year, with those between birth and 4 years of age being 1 of the highest incidence groups. To address gaps in service provision specifically for children with mild TBI (mTBI), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released guidelines for providers. Method The goal of this commentary is to deliver viewpoints on the application of the CDC guidelines directly to speech-language pathology clinical practice, with special attention paid to assessment, symptom monitoring, and intervention using a family-cen

Status report -- Identifying equity-focussed interventions to promote healthy weights.

INTRODUCTION: We developed screening criteria to identify population health interventions with an equity focus for inclusion on the Public Health Agency of Canada's Canadian Best Practices Portal. We applied them to the area of "healthy weights," specifically, obesity prevention. METHODS: We conducted a review of the literature and obtained input from expert external reviewers on changes to midstream environments. Interventions had to identify outcomes for groups with an underlying social disadvantage. We included papers with a focus on equity and vulnerable populations, intervention and/or e

Heavy gravity combined with light gravity local anesthetic in subarachnoid anesthesia for cesarean section did not reduce the incidence of intraoperative hypotension in maternal women: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid anesthesia is the primary anesthetic method for elective cesarean section surgery, characterized by rapidly taking effect and reliable analgesia. However, subarachnoid anesthesia is prone to cause a high block level, resulting in a high incidence of maternal hypotension. How to reduce the incidence of maternal hypotension under subarachnoid anesthesia is a practical problem that needs to be solved urgently in clinical practice. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was performed at Nantong Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital in China between January and July 2023

Comparison of prognoses of patients with type A aortic dissection treated with surgery in acute, subacute and chronic phases.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has indicated that patients with chronic type A aortic dissection (CTAAD) tend to have better postoperative outcomes compared to those with acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). Nevertheless, the comparative prognosis between patients undergoing surgery for subacute type A aortic dissection (STAAD) and CTAAD has not yet been clearly established. The primary objective of this study is to compare the clinical outcomes of patients with aortic dissection who undergo surgical repair at different time periods following the onset of the condition, thereby providing releva

Acute Augmented Effect of Virtual Reality (VR)-Integrated Relaxation and Mindfulness Exercising on Anxiety and Insomnia Symptoms: A Retrospective Analysis of 103 Anxiety Disorder Patients With Prominent Insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental disorders and often accompanied with sleep disturbance which can in turn exacerbate anxiety symptoms, creating a vicious cycle. In addition to psychopharmacological therapy, the effectiveness of psychotherapy as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for treating anxiety disorders and insomnia has been well documented and widely accepted, but it is labor-intensive and costly. However, virtual reality (VR)-integrated CBT may improve this condition but needs more evidences to support its extensive application in routine clinical practice.

Comparison of qualitative and quantitative analysis of capillaroscopic findings in patients with rheumatic diseases.

No guidelines for the application of qualitative and quantitative analysis of the capillaroscopic examination in the rheumatologic practice exist. The aims of the study were to compare qualitative and quantitative analysis of key capillaroscopic parameters in patients with common rheumatic diseases and to assess the reproducibility of the qualitative evaluation of the capillaroscopic parameters, performed by two different investigators. Two hundred capillaroscopic images from 93 patients with different rheumatic diseases were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively by two different investiga

Grouping and gambling: a Gestalt approach to understanding the gambler's fallacy.

The gambler's fallacy was examined in terms of grouping processes. The gambler's fallacy is the tendency to erroneously believe that for independent events, recent or repeated instances of an outcome (e.g., a series of "heads" when flipping a coin) will make that outcome less likely on an upcoming trial. Grouping was manipulated such that a critical trial following a run of heads or tails was grouped together with previous trials (i.e., the last trial of "Block 1") or was the first trial of another group (the first trial of "Block 2"). As predicted, the gambler's fallacy was evident when the c

Management of adolescents with hidradenitis suppurativa.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) can have devastating impacts on quality of life (QoL), especially during adolescence when patients face unique challenges related to self-esteem, body-image, and sexual maturation. Many teenage HS patients also experience social challenges related to school, relationships, and employment that may require physician intervention. Strategies for comprehensive management of this special group include addressing low medication adherence, screening for comorbidities, and recommending practical lifestyle modifications to reduce disease flares. Herein, we review the impac

[Treatment of tuberculosis].

The aim of this article is to give practicing physicians a practical approach to the treatment of latent and active tuberculosis. Most patients follow TB standard treatment recommended by WHO that depend on category of patient. It is a combination of four essential tuberculosis drugs of the first group: isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamid and ethambutol; in some cases streptomycin can replace ethambutol. This initial phase of intensive treatment is followed by a consolidation phase. Drugs should be administered in the morning on an empty stomach one hour before meals. Treatment of latent tuberc

[Therapy of the acute uncomplicated urinary tract infection].

Acute uncomplicated cystitis and acute uncomplicated pyelonephritis are two frequently encountered urinary tract infections (UTI) in premenopausal, healthy females. Recent epidemiological investigations showed that the incidence of these infections is higher than expected. Surveys on healthcare practices in North America revealed a high variability in the therapy of uncomplicated UTI. Standardized criteria for diagnosis and therapy of uncomplicated UTIs therefore are important in order to achieve sufficient sensitivity and specificity in clinical practice. Standardizing Peristomal Hygiene: Reducing Variation and Complications in Ostomy Care.

Peristomal skin complications (PSCs) remain a common, costly, and underrecognized challenge in ostomy care, driven by inconsistent education, variable clinical practices, and the absence of standardized terminology and protocols. These complications affect a substantial proportion of people living with an ostomy and are associated with leakage, pain, psychological distress, reduced health-related quality of life (QoL), and preventable health care utilization. To address this global gap, an international panel of ostomy care experts convened as the Peristomal Hygiene Advancement in Skin Educati

Missed Infection-Control Nursing Care from the Early Pandemic to the Post-Pandemic Era: Policy and Management Implications for Safer Healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Missed nursing care related to infection prevention and control compromises patient safety and reflects clinical practice gaps and organizational constraints. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified awareness of infection-control practices; however, whether this translated into sustained reductions remains unclear. AIM: To compare missed infection-control nursing care between the pre-/early-pandemic period (2019-2020) and the post-pandemic period (2026) and identify persistent omissions with implications for healthcare policy and management. METHODS: A descriptive study was conducted a

Psychosocial Experiences of HIV-Positive Women of African Descent in the Cultural Context of Infant Feeding: A Three-Country Comparative Analyses.

Infant feeding among mothers of African descent living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a critical practice that is influenced by policies, cultural expectations, and the resultant psychosocial state of the mother. Hence, this paper draws insights from a broader infant feeding study. It provides insights into how guidelines on infant feeding practices, cultural expectations, migration, or geographic status intersect to influence the psychosocial experiences of mothers living with HIV. We compared psychosocial experiences of Black mothers of African descent living with HIV in Nigeria

A mixed methods protocol for developing and testing implementation strategies for evidence-based obesity prevention in childcare: a cluster randomized hybrid type III trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the potential to reach at-risk children in childcare, there is a significant gap between current practices and evidence-based obesity prevention in this setting. There are few investigations of the impact of implementation strategies on the uptake of evidence-based practices (EBPs) for obesity prevention and nutrition promotion. This study protocol describes a three-phase approach to developing and testing implementation strategies to support uptake of EBPs for obesity prevention practices in childcare (i.e., key components of the WISE intervention). An educational intervention to promote appropriate complementary feeding practices and physical growth in infants and young children in rural Haryana, India.

Complementary feeding practices are often inadequate in developing countries, resulting in a significant nutritional decline between 6 and 18 mo of age. We assessed the effectiveness of an educational intervention to promote adequate complementary feeding practices that would be feasible to sustain with existing resources. The study was a cluster randomized controlled trial in communities in the state of Haryana in India. We developed the intervention through formative research. Eight communities were pair matched on their baseline characteristics; one of each pair was randomly assigned to rec
