Recovering from COVID lockdowns: Routine public sector PHC services in South Africa, 2019 - 2021.

BACKGROUND: In a previous article on the impact of COVID-19, the authors compared access to routine health services between 2019 and 2020. While differential by province, a number of services provided, as reflected in the District Health Information System (DHIS), were significantly affected by the pandemic. In this article we explore the extent to which the third and fourth waves affected routine services. OBJECTIVES: To assess the extent to which waves 3 and 4 of the COVID-19 pandemic affected routine health services in South Africa, and whether there was any recovery in 2021. METHODS: Dat

Evaluation of mass drug administration for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths in school-aged children in Bankass, Mali.

BACKGROUND: In 2004, Mali implemented mass drug administration (MDA) aimed at controlling schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths. Despite several rounds of MDA, the health district of Bankass reported low coverage (64.8%) for praziquantel and albendazole in 2017, meaning that this district was still facing challenges in accomplishing the targeted 75% coverage. This study aimed to explore the barriers and gaps that hindered MDA implementation in Bankass. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed. Questionnaires were administrated to all school-aged children in randomly selected vi

Health conditions of prisoners in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

We present the results of a quantitative and qualitative study on the living conditions and health of prisoners in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The goal was to produce strategic information to support the action of public officials who work in prisons. The results show that prisoners are young (average age: 30 years), poor, mostly black and brown (70.5%), have little education (only 1.5% of them have a higher education), and have been in prison for less than four years. Among the problems that indirectly affect their health, we emphasize: overcrowding (1.39 prisoners per one vacancy), idleness

"At the end of the day I'd still have to use a condom!": A qualitative investigation of use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among young gay and bisexual men in Nairobi, Kenya.

Despite availability of highly effective oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for close to a decade, uptake and adherence among at-risk young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in Kenya, remain significantly low. This study investigated levels of PrEP knowledge, motivations, facilitators and barriers influencing PrEP initiation, persistence and adherence among YMSM, in efforts to optimise use and reduce risk of new HIV infections. In September 2021, 22 YMSM selected from 248 YMSM who had previously participated in an integrated bio-behavioural sexual health survey, took part in semi-structur

Long-Term Functional Outcomes After Sepsis for Adult and Pediatric Critical Care Patients-Protocol for a Systematic Review.

Objective: Sepsis is responsible for a massive burden of disease, with a global estimate of 48.9 million cases resulting in approximately 11 million deaths annually. Survivors of sepsis may also experience long-term impairments that can persist for years after hospital discharge. These cognitive, physical and/or psychosocial deficits may contribute to a lower health related quality of life and represent a significant ongoing burden to the individual, the community and the health care system. We aim to systematically review the available evidence on long-term functional and quality of life outc

Aggression and violence towards informal dementia caregivers: a call for recognition and action.

Family caregivers are the backbone of dementia care worldwide, yet their safety remains largely absent from discussions of dementia-related aggression and violence. This commentary outlines the multidimensional sources and underlying causes of aggression and violence towards informal caregivers in dementia care, highlighting the need for greater recognition across research, practice, policy and public discourse. First, research must move beyond the assumption that violence in dementia care is primarily a problem affecting formal care staff or people living with dementia themselves. Second, cli
