AIMS: Hip joint disease associated with progressive amyloid deposition in uraemic patients receiving chronic haemodialysis treatment often requires treatment by joint arthroplasty. A total of 20 hip joints of 10 non-fixed corpses were examined within 48 h of death to measure the pressure below the inguinal ligament simulating the surgical conditions during total hip arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of various leg positions and insertion techniques of retractors during the surgical procedure for total hip replacement in order to detect supposed causes for indirect pressure injuries of the femoral nerve. The obtained results verified no increase of pressure in the inguinal canal which could explain an indirect injury of the femoral nerve.

OBJECTIVE: After introduction of hip sonographic screening in Germany in the year 1996 we are interested in its organisational features and the results on a national level. It has to be scrutinized in how far the medical consequences are oriented and in accordance with the national guideline of hip sonographic screening.

Hip replacement surgery is associated with a high frequency of postoperative deep vein thrombosis. Fifty infants with soft-tissue hip "clicks" persisting after age 3 months were prospectively studied by using ultrasound. Children with spastic hip subluxation secondary to cerebral palsy were treated with a standard protocol that focused on early detection of the subluxation using physical examination and anteroposterior pelvis radiographs. The results of 7150 consecutive primary and revision total hip arthroplasties performed between 1976 and 1990 were reviewed retrospectively. There are no reports in the literature of femoral artery thrombi occurring as a complication of open reduction of congenital hip displacement. In an 11-month-old female infant, a femoral artery thrombus most likely formed as a result of compression of the femoral artery with a muscle retractor hook used in performing Ludloff's procedure. Femoral artery thrombi should be considered as a possible complication of reduction of congenital hip dislocation with Ludloff's procedure.

Problematic hip subluxation is uncommon in spastic diplegia. We have identified three cases of late hip subluxation in teenage children with spastic diplegia associated with unrecognized hydrocephalus or ventriculoperitoneal shunt dysfunction. Each was a community ambulator with radiologically stable hips in childhood, but in adolescence underwent a deterioration in ambulatory status associated with rapid hip subluxation. Subsequent investigation revealed undiagnosed hydrocephalus in one patient and shunt dysfunction requiring revision in the other two. Surgery was performed in all three cases

Primary uncemented Porous-Coated Anatomic total hip replacement was carried out in 72 hips in 62 Chinese patients. Their average age was 50 years and the average follow up was 3 1/2 years. The most common diagnosis was avascular necrosis. The average preoperative Harris score of 36.3 points improved to 83.2 at the last follow up.
