OBJECTIVES: Distinguishing clinical characteristics of bipolar patients who have made a suicide attempt may help to identify at-risk individuals. We sought to identify such factors and to consider them within a stress-diathesis model of suicidal behavior.
METHODS: Patients with bipolar disorder (N = 96) were compared with respect to the presence or absence at baseline evaluation of a history of suicide attempt. We used multiple logistic regression analysis to assess the unique associations of independent variables to history of a past suicide attempt.

We conducted a 320 year retrospective survey of the history and genealogy of a large Brazilian family with SCA7. The ancestral couple was from the State of Ceará, Brazil, and the genealogical tree was composed of 577 individuals, including 217 males (37.6%), 255 females (44.1%) and 105 individuals of unknown sex (18.1%). Arguments over the definition of obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS) have still not been satisfactorily resolved. As a result, robust estimates of the prevalence of OSAHS are not possible. New approaches are needed to identify those who have "CPAP responsive" disease, enabling more accurate estimates to be made of the prevalence of the sleep apnoea syndrome in the community.

Hernias can lead to significant morbidity in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). We studied the natural history and outcome of incarcerated hernia (IH), with or without bowel strangulation (IHS), in PD patients. We performed a retrospective chart review on all PD patients who developed an IH (n = 11) or an IHS (7/11) in the last 12 years. Of the 11 patients, 54% were female.
