Why Do Individuals Engage in In-Play Sports Betting? A Qualitative Interview Study.

Increasing technological advancements and changing consumer behavior has resulted in individuals having access to a wider range of online gambling markets and sporting events than ever before. Sports betting in real time has been aided by the accessibility of smartphone devices. Consequently, the popularity of live sports betting (i.e., 'in-play' betting) has spread across Europe and around the rest of world. The aim of the present exploratory study was to examine attitudes and opinions towards online sports betting. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 17 males and 2 females aged betwee

Sex differences in neural responses to reward and the influences of individual reward and punishment sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Men and women show differences in sensitivity to reward and punishment, which may impact behavior in health and disease. However, the neural bases of these sex differences remain under-investigated. Here, by combining functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a variant of the Monetary Incentive Delay Task (MIDT), we examined sex differences in the neural responses to wins and losses and how individual reward and punishment sensitivity modulates these regional activities. METHODS: Thirty-sex men and 27 women participated in the fMRI study. We assessed sensitivity to punishme

The accumulation of plasma acylcarnitines are associated with poor immune recovery in HIV-infected individuals.

BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) can reduce opportunistic infections and mortality rates among individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); however, some HIV-infected individuals exhibit poor immune recovery after ART. Hence, we explored the association between metabolome profiles and immune recovery in HIV-infected individuals following ART. METHODS: An untargeted metabolomics approach was used to analyze plasma samples from 18 HIV-negative individuals and 20 HIV-infected individuals, including 10 immunological non-responders (INR, CD4+ T cell rise < 100 cells/μl) an

Better safe than wealthy: Dysfunctional risk avoidance in spider-fearful individuals.

Previous research has documented that fearful individuals avoid fear-relevant cues even if they incur costs in doing so. Paradigms that were previously used to study avoidance in the lab, manipulated reward contingencies in favor of selecting either fear-relevant or neutral cues, e.g., spiders versus butterflies. We, thus, developed a paradigm where the chance of monetary gains was linked with increasing probability of a fear-relevant or a neutral outcome. To this end, we modified the well-established Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) to include fear-relevant outcomes. Individuals with and wit

Self-reported dental anxiety and injection phobia among individuals with tattoos and piercings.

Injection phobia and dental anxiety can, in severe cases, lead to avoidance of necessary treatment. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate self-reported injection phobia and dental anxiety among individuals with tattoos and/or piercings. The Injection Phobia Scale-Anxiety (IPSA) short form and the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) questionnaires were applied. Both the total IPSA and MDAS scores were significantly higher for individuals with tattoos in comparison with a control group (P < 0.001), suggesting a need for anxiety-reducing measures and facilitated treatment for this group

Immediate effects of treadmill walking in individuals with Lewy body dementia and Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Treadmill training may improve gait disorders associated with neurodegenerative diseases. In Parkinson's disease (PD), treadmill training alters gait patterns after one session, and long-term training improves gait parameters, fall risk, and quality of life. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the feasibility and safety of using this intervention for people with Lewy body dementia (LBD) or Huntington's disease (HD)? METHODS: In this observational study, 10 individuals with HD, 8 individuals with LBD, and 10 control individuals walked for 20 min on a treadmill using a speed dependent proto

Depression as a Function of Social Support in Transgender and Cisgender Individuals with Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

This study focused on the relationships among social support, self-esteem, and depression in transgender and cisgender individuals suffering from an incurable or curable sexually transmitted disease. Data were collected from 210 participants with an STI using a semi-structured interview along with culturally adapted standardized instruments. Results indicated no differences between transgender and cisgender groups in depression, although there were large differences in social support and self-esteem. Preliminary regression analysis identified only STI type and duration of STI as significant pr

Glow in the dark: Using a heat-sensitive camera for blind individuals with prosthetic vision.

To date, retinal implants are the only available treatment for blind individuals with retinal degenerations such as retinitis pigmentosa. Argus II is the only visual implant with FDA approval, with more than 300 users worldwide. Argus II stimulation is based on a grayscale image coming from a head-mounted visible-light camera. Normally, the 11°×19° field of view of the Argus II user is full of objects that may elicit similar phosphenes. The prosthesis cannot meaningfully convey so much visual information, and the percept is reduced to an ambiguous impression of light. This study is aimed at in

The Efficacy of Digital Hearing Aids in the Management of Tinnitus in Individuals with Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Tinnitus is a condition which is often seen coexisting with hearing loss. In many persons with tinnitus, the use of amplification devices has been reported to show improvement in difficulties due to tinnitus. Though the underlying physiological mechanism is not clearly understood, hearing aids have proven beneficial. The aim of the study is to evaluate the benefit of the hearing aid in management of tinnitus. This study was conducted to assess whether such claims are true and, if so, what is the quantum of such benefit. In order to ascertain this, we studied the effects of three commonly used

Development of the social concerns in individuals with body-focused repetitive behaviors (SCIB) scale.

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) include such disorders as compulsive hair pulling, skin picking, nail biting, and cheek biting, which can lead to significant psychosocial impairment (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). As such, social concerns (i.e., concerns about how others view their behavior or affected body sites) are common in these individuals, and may significantly associate with BFRB symptomology (Snorrason et al., 2012). Currently, there are no measures to adequately assess social concerns specific to BFRBs. To this end, we developed a new self-report measure called th

Personal resource profiles of individuals with a history of interpersonal trauma and their impact on opioid misuse.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals who experience interpersonal trauma (e.g., intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and adverse childhood experiences) are disproportionately affected by the opioid epidemic; however, not all will engage in opioid misuse behaviors. Personal resources, such as coping, social support, and self-efficacy, may attenuate the negative effects of trauma and foster resiliency. This study examines how personal resources affect opioid misuse among individuals with a history of interpersonal trauma. METHOD: Data were collected from a convenience sample (N = 236) through a cross-s
