BACKGROUND: Our aims were to determine the rate of progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and to identify predictors, with particular emphasis on bone and mineral metabolism.
METHODS: Retrospective and observational study including 300 patients with advanced CKD (61.2% males, 33.1% diabetics; age 65.6±14 years). Mean follow-up time was 19.4±10.1 months. Bilateral variations of renal vessels were encountered during the dissection of a 54-year-old male cadaver. There were triple renal arteries bilaterally, double renal veins on the right, and an unusual formation of renal vein on the left side. A bilateral occurrence of triple renal arteries has not been encountered in the literature, so does an incidence. Additional renal vessels have the potential to cause clinical complications such as hydronephrosis. Their existence has utmost importance in surgical and radiological interventions and radiological examinations.

DATA SOURCES: A literature search was conducted through MEDLINE (1950-July 2013), PubMed (1965-July 2013), and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (1970-July 2013) using the search terms allopurinol and kidney or renal. In addition, reference citations from publications identified were reviewed.

Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) in patients with horseshoe kidneys (HSKs) remains poorly studied. The present study aimed to assess clinical success and stone-free rates in HSK patients with renal stones treated with flexible ureteroscopy. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in hospitalized patients and is an important cause of mortality. This is a descriptive study of AKI in patients from Himachal Pradesh, India, located in Western Himalayan region. Over a period of 1 year, 102 patients with clinical and laboratory evidence of azotemia were included. Out of 102 patients, 84.3% had community acquired AKI and 15.7% had hospital acquired AKI. The algorithm takes into account the achievements of modern medical technologies developed in the recent years. Localized cystic disease of the kidney is a benign nonsurgical entity and presents with multiple cystic lesions in just one portion of the kidney or involves the entire one kidney. We report a case of localized cystic disease of the kidney in a 16 year-old-male. This patient underwent an ultrasound examination and incidentally found to have multiple cysts in the right kidney whereas the left kidney was normal. Diagnosis was confirmed by typical MRI findings, absence of any family history, normal results of urine analysis and renal function tests.
