We identified 34 patients with Coxiella burnetii infection using PCR; 31 (86%) cases were diagnosed from cardiac specimens. Nearly half (15/31, 48%) of those cases were not reported to any channel of national disease surveillance, indicating substantial underreporting for diseases identified using molecular methods at noncommercial laboratories.

Recent seroprevalence studies in animals detected Rocio virus in regions of Brazil, indicating risk for re-emergence of this pathogen. We identified Rocio virus RNA in samples from 2 human patients for whom dengue fever was clinically suspected but ruled out by laboratory findings. Ferret badger-associated human rabies cases emerged in China in 1994. We used a retrospective epidemiologic survey, virus isolation, laboratory diagnosis, and nucleotide sequencing to document its reemergence in 2002-2008. An outbreak of avian influenza (H7N3) among poultry resulted in laboratory-confirmed disease in 1 of 103 exposed persons. Incomplete use of personal protective equipment (PPE) was associated with conjunctivitis and influenza-like symptoms. Rigorous use of PPE by persons managing avian influenza outbreaks may reduce exposure to potentially hazardous infected poultry materials.

Following an "extreme-adventure" athletic event on the island of Guam, 21 of 105 participants reported being ill. Three of 10 participants who reporting having a fever (temp > 101EF) had laboratory confirmed leptospirosis. An analysis of risk factors reported by both ill and not-ill race participants suggested that exposure to recreational waters was responsible for these infections.

In North America enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli have emerged as important enteric pathogens since their initial description in 1982. They have been associated with the idiopathic haemolytic uraemic syndrome and in outbreaks, mortality rates of up to 31% have been recorded. In this paper the recent literature pertaining to the pathogenesis, laboratory identification, epidemiology and therapy of infections by these organisms is reviewed.
