Role of Circular RNAs in Liver Diseases.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a subclass of noncoding RNAs characterized by their closed-loop structure without terminal 3' or 5' ends. Studies have shown that circRNAs play pivotal roles in the regulation of various cellular processes. These molecules function as microRNA (miRNA) sponges, interact with RNA-binding proteins, and modulate gene transcription. CircRNAs are vital for regulating liver homeostasis, and dysregulation of their expression is correlated with liver diseases such as hepatic fibrosis, steatosis, inflammation, and liver cancer. Elucidating the functional significance of circ…

The Biology of Malaria Parasite Liver Infection.

The Plasmodium liver stages of infection-initiated when mosquito-transmitted sporozoites invade hepatocytes-are asymptomatic and essential for initial parasite replication and progression to blood stage infection. This paper provides an overview of liver stage biology, from sporozoite invasion mechanisms and host hepatocyte remodeling to intracellular development, nutrient acquisition, and evasion of host defenses. We highlight recent insights into cellular and molecular host-parasite interactions, and innate immune pathways that mediate liver stage clearance. The paper also reviews the evolut…

Significance of Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound of the Liver.

ABSTRACT: For more than 20 years, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has been an important tool in the imaging of liver tumors, enabling detection and differentiation of the most relevant hepatic lesions with high sensitivity and specificity. Its applications include: immediate characterization of incidentally detected focal liver lesions, assessment of the number and extent of liver metastases in patients with known malignancy, and more detailed evaluation of the liver in chronic liver diseases such as cirrhosis. CEUS of the liver also supports invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures …

Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Therapies for Liver Disease.

Liver dysfunction may reduce the metabolism of drugs that undergo extensive hepatic processing. This will lead to reduced clearance and elimination, and can cause accumulation of the drug, increasing the risk of toxicity. Pentoxifylline and ursodeoxycholic acid are 2 pharmaceuticals that can provide benefits for a variety of equine hepatic diseases. Nutraceuticals are frequently used in horses with hepatopathy, targeting oxidative stress, inflammation, and hepatocellular injury. Neutraceuticals such as S-adenosylmethionine, silymarin and vitamin E are most commonly used although extensive rese…
