A 28-year-old woman was admitted to the ENT Department of the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University because of left otitis externa, chronic mastoiditis and facial nerve palsy (lower motor neurone). Left radical mastoidectomy with wide debridement of granulation and necrotic tissue at ear canal, dura, sigmoid sinus, ossicle and facial nerve were done two weeks after admission. Kinetics and distribution of K were studied in myocardiuum of chronic Mg-deficient rats. The experimental design was as follows. Rats were fed either Mg-deficient or control diet for 30 days. In the late summer and early autumn of 1977, seven cases of milk fever were observed on a dairy farm. It was believed that condition was most likely to be due to preparturient hypomagnesaemia. Therefore the magnesium levels in the blood and urine of both lactating and non-lactating cows were determined in this herd during several months.

OBJECTIVES: A common endocrine and metabolic condition affecting women of reproductive age is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). We show here by whole field monitoring of free intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i), locally recorded field potential (fp) and external [Ca2+], that low-[Mg2+] induces seizure like events (SLEs) accompanied by simultaneous fluctuations of [Ca2+]i and [Ca2+]e in cultured hippocampal slices. In the management of electrolyte abnormalities along with hypokalaemia and hypocalcaemia, etc, presence of hypomsgenesaemia should be thought of even when serum magnesium is within normal limit as magneium is a predominantly intracellulr ion.
