Facilitating extracellular respiration of Methanosarcina barkeri with magnetite nanoparticle: Formation of conductive magnetite nanoparticle-membrane complex.

Extracellular electron transfer (EET) by type I Methanosarcina is relevant to bioenergy recovery, greenhouse gas emissions, environmental remediation and metal corrosion. However, its extracellular respiration is limited by low methanophenazine (MP) levels in the cell membrane, resulting in poor conductivity and restricted electron flux. Here, we grew Methanosarcina barkeri, the most studied species in type I Methanosarcina, with methanol as a sole electron donor and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) as a sole electron acceptor. Nearly all AQDS was reduced in the presence of magnetite nanop

Clinical phenotype and prognosis of patients with diabetic kidney disease complicated by a primary podocytopathy.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DN), a leading cause of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), often progresses despite standard care. Evidence suggests a DN subgroup exhibiting overlapping features of primary podocytopathy, potentially responsive to immunosuppression, that has not yet been systematically studied. We hypothesized that DN patients with biopsy-proven concurrent ultrastructural features of primary podocytopathy will demonstrate superior renal outcomes following immunosuppressive therapy, compared with those with isolated DN pathology. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted

Myocardial degeneration precedes fibrosis: The role of myocardial autophagy and its pathological evaluation.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by progressive ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction, yet the cellular damage that precedes intercellular fibrosis remains incompletely defined. Electron microscopy has long revealed autophagic vacuoles and myofilament lysis in cardiomyopathy, but their pathological significance has been debated for decades. Recent advances in ultrastructural analysis, including LC3 immunoelectron microscopy, have enabled more precise characterization of these changes and have renewed interest in the role of autophagy in cardiomyopathy. In this review, we i

Multifunctional hybrid films made from CoT3OTx4 and CoFeT2OT4 nanoparticles inside a poly 3-hydroxybutyrate matrix and study of their impact in methyl orange photodegradation.

This work aims to produce hybrid materials with potential applications in dye photodegradation. Therefore, hybrid films were obtained by incorporating cobalt (II, III) oxide (Co3O4) or cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles (NPs) with 18 ± 1.6 nm and 26 ± 1.3 nm, respectively, into a poly 3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB) polymeric matrix. The Co3O4@P3HB and CoFe2O4@P3HB hybrid films were fabricated by solvent casting in a ratio of 85 mg to 15 mg (P3HB-NPs). Different spectroscopic and microscopy techniques characterized the Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 NPs and the P3HB, Co3O4@P3HB and CoFe2O4@P3HB films. The opt

Microstructural Evaluation of the Mineralized Apical Barrier Induced by a Calcium Hydroxide Paste Containing Iodoform: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: A 65-year-old man had nonsurgical retreatment using an iodoform and calcium hydroxide paste in a maxillary left canine with persistent apical periodontitis. An apical mineralized barrier (AMB) was observed 3-months postoperatively. Unfortunately, the tooth was extracted due to a cementum tear. This provided an opportunity to analyze the AMB histologically, as there is a lack of previous reports on its microstructure. METHODS: After extraction and removal of the granulation tissue from the root surface, the canine was processed, and observed using micro-computed tomography (μCT)

Preparation of Microcapsules Coating and the Study of Their Bionic Anti-Fouling Performance.

With the increasing demands to better the marine environment, environmentally friendly anti-fouling coatings have attracted attention from society. Adding hydrolyzable microcapsules without toxin to paints is a very useful and safe method to get bionic anti-fouling coatings with a micro-nano surface structure. Based on this trend, a form of environment-friendly microcapsules were prepared through mini-emulsion polymerization. The target microcapsules had a poly(urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) shell and a mixed core of silicone oil and capsaicin. Additionally, the microcapsules were introduced into zi

Self-Assembled Templates of Aromatic Pentapeptides for Synthesis of CdS Quantum-Dots to Detect the Trace Amounts of Hg(2+) in Aqueous Solutions.

Molecular self-assembly has become a popular tool to prepare nanomaterials with potential applications, such as ion-responsive detection of Hg(2+) in aqueous solutions. In this study, FFACD aromatic pentapeptides, whose N-terminuses were protected by carboxyl (Ac-FFACD) or a 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl group (Fmoc-FFACD), were chosen as building blocks to produce nanostructures in solutions. Based on the preliminary determination of the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) of Ac-FFACD and Fmoc-FFACD aromatic pentapeptides in water, the order of magnitude of which is 10(-5) mol·L(-1), self-a
