Cerebellar ataxia is characterized by incoordination and decomposition of movements, manifesting as gait instability, limb incoordination, oculomotor dysfunction, and scanning dysarthria. Ataxias may be acquired or genetic. Currently, there is a paucity of published data among Filipinos. Herein, we review the etiologies of ataxia published in the literature and discuss the current state of ataxia work-up and management in the Philippines. A literature search was conducted in March 2026 using the search terms: ataxia OR cerebellar oculomotor abnormality OR scanning speech AND ((Philippines[Affi

BACKGROUND: GNAO1-related disorders (GNAO1-RD) encompass a diverse spectrum of neurodevelopmental and movement disorders arising from variants in the GNAO1 gene. Dyskinetic crises, marked by sudden and intense exacerbations of abnormal involuntary movements, present a significant challenge in GNAO1-RD.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to establish a standardized framework for understanding dyskinetic crises, addressing crucial aspects such as definition, triggers, diagnostic criteria, complications, and management strategies.
METHODS: A Delphi consensus process was conducted involving internatio…

Dystonin (Dst) is a causative gene for Dystonia musculorum (dt) mice, which is an inherited disorder exhibiting dystonia-like movement and ataxia with sensory degeneration. Dst is expressed in a variety of tissues, including the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), muscles, and skin. However, the Dst-expressing cell type(s) for dt phenotypes have not been well characterized. To address the questions whether the disruption of Dst in Schwann cells induces movement disorders and how much impact does it have on dt phenotypes, we generated Dst conditional knockout (cKO) m…

Tic disorders represent a developmental neuropsychiatric condition whose causes can be attributed to a variety of environmental, neurobiological, and genetic factors. From a neurophysiological perspective, the disorder has classically been associated with neurochemical imbalances (particularly dopamine and serotonin) and structural and functional alterations affecting, in particular, brain areas and circuits involved in the processing and coordination of movements: the basal ganglia, thalamus, motor cortical area, and cingulate cortex; however, more recent research is demonstrating the involve

There are clear disparities in motor services provided to children with autism spectrum disorder (physical and recreational therapies) compared to their standard therapies (speech-language and occupational therapies). Children with autism spectrum disorder need greater access to and funding for motor services (physical and recreational therapies) and physical activity programs. Movement experts including PTs, adapted physical educators, and community exercise/sports coaches/professionals need basic, specialized, and continuing education training to meet the needs of children and adults with au

Joint hypermobility syndrome is an inherited disorder with autosomal dominant pattern; is characterized by joint hyperlaxity and musculoskeletal pains. Thermal hypermobility refers to the increase in active or passive movements of joints based on their normal ranges. Joint hypermobility syndrome also has gastrointestinal symptoms, sleep disorders, fibromyalgia, psychological disorders, migraine headache, ophthalmic, autonomic, among others. To diagnose hypermobility syndrome, Brighton's criteria are generally accepted and published in 1998. This criteria also known as benign joint hypermobilit

Essential tremor (ET), the cause of which remains poorly understood, is one of the most common neurological disorders. While environmental agents have been proposed to play a role, genetic factors are believed to contribute to its onset. Thus far, three gene loci (ETM1 on 3q13, ETM2 on 2p24.1 and a locus on 6p23) have been identified in patients and families with the disorder. In addition, a Ser9Gly variant in the dopamine D3 receptor gene on 3q13 has been suggested to be a risk factor. Moreover, genetically deficient animal models express a phenotype that overlaps with some clinical character

Rett syndrome is a disorder noted to date only in females and characterized by a pervasive developmental disability following apparently normal early infancy. In addition to gait difficulties, stereotypic hand movements, and loss of communication and purposeful hand skills, autistic-like behavior is an early sign that often results in misdiagnosis. Despite these significant clinical abnormalities, neuropathologic features are modest, and no consistent laboratory abnormality or diagnostic marker has been identified. The current status of research in RS is considered within the context of autism

Connectivity changes after brain lesions due to stroke are tightly linked to functional outcome. Recent analyses of fMRI time series indicate that dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC), reflecting transient states of connectivity may capture network-level disruptions distant to the lesion site. Yet, the relevance of such dynamic connectivity patterns for motor recovery remains unclear. We, therefore, combined the analysis of static and dFNC and a repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) lesion approach, to test whether dFNC provides region-specific insight into motor system

Migraine is associated with enhanced motion sickness susceptibility and can cause episodic vertigo [vestibular migraine (VM)], but the mechanisms relating migraine to these vestibular symptoms remain uncertain. We tested the hypothesis that the central integration of rotational cues (from the semicircular canals) and gravitational cues (from the otolith organs) is abnormal in migraine patients. A postrotational tilt paradigm generated a conflict between canal cues (which indicate the head is rotating) and otolith cues (which indicate the head is tilted and stationary), and eye movements were m

BACKGROUND: The visual system is necessary for reading. Understanding the mechanics of eye movements during reading can give insight into the reading process. The ReadAlyzer is an electronic recording system that measures eye movements while reading. Long passages on the ReadAlyzer of 800 words have recently been introduced as a tool to assess the efficiency of reading eye movements. Previously, short passages of 100 words have been used exclusively. This project was designed to determine if passage length influences the quality of reading eye movements;

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The escalating global burden of neurodegenerative diseases, coupled with a lack of disease-modifying therapies, has intensified the search for modifiable risk factors. This review aims to synthesize the extensive recent literature to position the brain's waste clearance pathway, the glymphatic system, as a core physiological bridge connecting disordered sleep to the molecular pathogenesis of neurodegeneration, thereby providing a coherent mechanistic framework for clinicians and researchers.
RECENT FINDINGS: Compelling evidence from the last decade solidifies the glymphatic

The PD-DLB psychosis complex found in Parkinson's disease (PD) and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) includes hallucinations, Somatic Symptom/Functional Disorders, and delusions. These disorders exhibit similar presentation patterns and progression. Mechanisms at the root of these symptoms also share similarities with processes promoting altered states of consciousness found in Rapid Eye Movement sleep, psychiatric disorders, or the intake of psychedelic compounds. We propose that these mechanisms find a crucial driver and trigger in the dysregulated activity of high-order thalamic nuclei set in

Cognitive assessment has a broad application prospect, including estimate of childhood neuro development and maturation, diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, and selection for special profession. With the development of computer technique and behavioral recording sensors, the method of cognitive assessment has been replaced from paper scale test to human-computer interaction. We can not only obtain the results of tasks, but also make it possible to acquire multiple behavioral and physiological data during the task. However, there is still a strong challenge of recording multi-source data s

Neurodegenerative proteinopathies are defined as a class of neurodegenerative disorders, with either genetic or sporadic age-related onset, characterized by the pathological accumulation of aggregated protein deposits. These mainly include Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's disease (HD) as well as frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). The deposition of abnormal protein aggregates in the brain of patients affected by these disorders is thought to play a causative role in neuronal loss and disease progression. On that account
