The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a critical mediator of cellular physiology, and its deregulation is implicated in a broad spectrum of pathological conditions, ranging from skin disorders to epithelial malignancies and brain tumours. Although lack of EGFR signalling primarily affects skin and brain development and tissue homeostasis, aberrant EGFR activation through overexpression or mutation converts the receptor into a potent oncogenic driver. This occurs particularly in human cancers such as glioblastoma, non-small-cell lung carcinoma, colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcino

Mandibular reconstruction with the fibula free flap is the gold standard for large defects, with virtual surgical planning becoming integral to the process. The localization and dissection of critical vessels, such as the recipient vessels in the neck and the perforating vessels of the fibula flap, are demanding steps that directly impact surgical success. Augmented reality (AR) offers a solution by overlaying three-dimensional virtual models directly onto the surgeon's view of the operative field. We report the first case in Latin America utilizing a low-cost, commercially available holograph

Lipomas are the most frequent benign soft-tissue tumors, but they only infrequently occur in the head and neck region. Among these, those arising in the temporal region, especially from the interfascial fat pad between the two layers of the deep temporal fascia (DTF), are exceptionally rare. This compartment serves as a gliding and protective plane for the overlying temporoparietal fascia and the neurovascular structures coursing within it, including the superficial temporal artery (STA) and the frontal branch of the facial nerve. A routine dissection of an 80-year-old male cadaver revealed a

BACKGROUND: Platysmal bands contribute to neck ageing and lower-face descent. Although botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) is approved for this indication, conventional whole-muscle dosing requires many superficial injections with attendant risks.
OBJECTIVE: To develop an anatomically guided protocol that targets motor-dense zones of the platysma, optimizing efficacy while reducing dose and complications.
METHODS: Sihler-stained dissections mapped motor versus sensory innervation. Ultrasound-guided injections were performed in 40 patients, delivering 30-60 U BoNT-A per side at 15 sites concentrated i

INTRODUCTION: In many cases of female radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, the procedure involves simultaneous removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, anterior vaginal wall, and urethra. After this procedure, rare complications like vaginal dehiscence and evisceration may occur. We herein describe this article surgical technique involving preservation of the distal anterior vaginal wall to maintain pelvic floor strength and retrograde resection of the proximal anterior vaginal wall.
MATERIALS AND SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: The presented case was a 61-year-old woman who had a bladder tumor

Ectopic mediastinal goiter (EMG) is an unusual condition where thyroid tissue develops in the mediastinum instead of its usual location in the neck. Diagnosing EMG can be challenging, as it represents only a small fraction of all mediastinal tumors. Management typically involves a sternotomy or other thoracic approaches; however, a cervical approach may be considered in select cases. We report the case of a 65-year-old woman who was admitted following the incidental discovery of an anterior mediastinal mass on chest CT. The mass displayed imaging characteristics similar to thyroid tissue but a

Salivary Glands (SGs) are vital organs that are particularly prone to damage due to head and neck cancer radiation treatment, as well as other autoimmune disorders. SG hypofunction often impairs the production of saliva, which causes a significant loss of functioning for the oral cavity. There are a multitude of treatments for rescuing SG hypofunction; however, they are usually administered systemically, causing adverse effects and requiring higher doses of the agents. More localised approaches have demonstrated adequate potential as alternative treatments but are still in their initial stages

The recurrent laryngeal nerve is a bilateral branch of the vagus nerve that is mainly associated with the motor innervation of the intrinsic muscles of the larynx. Despite its bilateral distribution, the right and left recurrent laryngeal nerves display unequal length due to embryological processes related to the development of the aortic arches. This length asymmetry leads to theories about morphological compensations to provide symmetrical functions to the intrinsic muscles of the larynx. In this study we investigated the developmental and cross-sectional morphometrics of the recurrent laryn

The purpose of this research was to investigate the measures, topography, and vascularization of the thyroid gland in Macaca mulatta, a non-human primate. The study involved the dissection of ten male adult cadavers of Macaca mulatta. The length, width, and thickness of the right lobe of the thyroid were 2.552 ± 0.341, 1.019 ± 0.137, and 0.729 ± 0.137 cm. These measures in the left thyroid lobe were 2.406 ± 0.299, 1.013. ± 0.087, and 0.769 ± 0.083 cm. The study found no significant differences in the measures of the left and right lobes of the thyroid gland in rhesus monkeys. Regarding topogra

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Variety of revascularization strategies have been deployed to treat the deterioration of cerebral blood flow. Blood flow restoration can be achieved by direct or indirect procedures. The indirect reconstructive procedure to augment blood flow involves encephalomyosynangiosis, encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis, or encephalodurosynangiosis, and has been used effectively in ischemic Moyamoya disease. However, the preferred procedure must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and remains controversial in other cerebral arterial diseases. Here, we report the "interhemispheri

BACKGROUND: Extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA)-dissecting aneurysms (DAs) rarely cause re-entry tears and lower cranial nerve palsies. The therapeutic strategies for these pathologies are not well established. This report presents a case of an extracranial ICA -DA with a re-entry tear that caused lower cranial nerve palsy.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 60-year-old man presented with left neck pain, hoarseness, and dysphagia. Physical examination and laryngoscopy determined palsies of the left cranial nerves IX, X, and XII. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) revealed a DA in the left extracra

BACKGROUND The brachial plexus is a complex neural structure providing motor and sensory innervation to structures of the arm, shoulder, and upper chest. The anatomical structure is typically divided into roots, trunks, divisions, and cords. Due to the presence of multiple nerve roots and branches, anatomical variations are common. Awareness of variations from normal anatomy is important in imaging, administration of nerve blocks, and surgical procedures of the neck and shoulder region. CASE REPORT We present a case of multiple anatomic variations of the right brachial plexus identified in a c

PURPOSE: During reconstructive planning for mandibular resection and reconstruction, it was noted that the left internal and external jugular veins were absent, with a considerable compensatory internal jugular vein present on the contralateral side.
METHODS: An accidental finding in the CT angiogram of the head and neck was assessed.
RESULTS: Osteocutaneous fibular free flap is a well-established reconstructive surgery for mandibular defects that can involve anastomosis of the internal jugular vein and its tributaries. A 60-years-old man with intraoral squamous cell carcinoma, initially tre

A good working view is critical for safe and successful endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms. In a few cases, endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms may be challenging due to difficulty in obtaining a proper working view. In this report of 6 cases, we described the advantage of using a distal intracranial catheter (DIC) to achieve better visualization of cerebral aneurysms hidden by a parent artery or its branches. Between September 2017 and January 2021, we treated 390 aneurysms with endovascular techniques. In 6 cases in which it was difficult to obtain a proper working view, t
