Liraglutide reduces lipid accumulation in human orbital fibroblasts in Graves' orbitopathy.

Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is characterized by proliferation and differentiation of orbital fibroblasts. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are widely used for metabolic disorders and have been reported to modulate cell proliferation and differentiation. The present study aimed to examine the effects of GLP-1RAs on key fibroblast-mediated pathogenic processes relevant to GO using human orbital fibroblasts. Orbital fibroblasts were isolated from patients with GO and non-GO controls. Cells were treated with the GLP-1RAs liraglutide (100 nM) or semaglutide (200 nM). Fibroblast pro

Surgical management of orbital wall fractures in juveniles: a European multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: Isolated orbital floor fractures in juveniles are a challenge, as children and adolescents may experience diplopia and limited ocular motility, even with little to no periorbital edema or visible signs of injury to the eye. The aim of the present study is to assess the demographic and clinical variables, and the outcomes of pediatric patients affected by isolated orbital wall fractures at several European oral and maxillofacial surgery centers. METHODS: Pediatric patients (less than 18 years) with hospitalized and surgically treated for unilateral isolated orbital blow out fract

Fractional Orbital Angular Momentum Sorting Using Wind Spiral Transformation.

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode sorting is a crucial component of the optical multiplexing systems based on the optical vortex beam carrying OAM. However, the number of sortable integer-order OAM states remains limited. Herein, we propose a general spiral transformation, that is, wind spiral transformation, to conduct sortable fractional-order OAM states to solve the existing drawback. By transforming a fractional-order OAM mode into a superposition of integer-order OAM states, the sorting capacity of OAM mode is significantly extended, where the proposed method is suitable for integer and

Orbital-Ordering Switch for Tunable Magnetic Anisotropy in Two-Dimensional CrCl2.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) intricately links an electron's spin and orbital motions, underpinning a myriad of physical phenomena from magnetocrystalline anisotropy to topological spin texture. While the prevailing focus centers on asymmetry-induced spin splitting like Rashba/Dresselhaus SOC, an unexplored avenue lies in orbital ordering, shaping crystal field symmetry crucial for centrosymmetric or low-dimensional magnetism. Our study presents a novel approach to manipulate magnetic anisotropy in two-dimensional (2D) magnets by toggling orbital orders in monolayer and bilayer CrCl2. We demonstr

Orbital biomanufacturing: the key to space resiliency, operational persistence, and ethical sustainability.

Space-based biomanufacturing has historically focused on long-duration crewed and exploration missions, but its greater potential lies in supporting in-space logistics, manufacturing, and servicing in Earth orbit. This article provides a strategic perspective on how shifting investments, policy, and R&D to orbital biomanufacturing could revolutionize defense, commercial, and civil sectors by enhancing supply chain resiliency, operational flexibility, ethical debris management, and commercial viability in Earth orbit.

Energy-efficient field-free switching by orbital torque and spin-reorientation.

Spin-orbit torque has emerged as a leading strategy for low-power magnetisation switching in modern spintronics. To date, most efforts have focused on boosting spin currents via the spin Hall effect, exploiting only the electron's spin while largely ignoring its orbital angular momentum. Meanwhile, deterministic switching of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy layers typically requires an external in-plane field to break inversion symmetry, adding power overhead and hindering large-scale deployment. Here, we demonstrate energy-efficient field-free magnetisation switching enabled by spin reorient

Amplification of Lanthanide f-Orbital Differences by Redox Noninnocent Semiquinone Binding.

A deeper understanding of the electronic structure of the lanthanides (Ln) is essential to harness their technological applications and enable responsible recovery/separation. Here, an isostructural series of tris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate (Tp*)-supported LnIII adducts of a redox noninnocent 3,5-di-tert-butyl-o-semiquinone (DTBSQ) ligand, (Tp*)2Ln(DTBSQ), is characterized experimentally and computationally for all the early lanthanides La-Gd, except Pm. Computational simulations, together with spectroscopic measurements on selected systems, show the metals retain the trivalent oxidation

Giant Orbital Rashba-Edelstein Effect in Crystalline Cu2O/Cu Heterostructures.

Orbital current-induced torque (OT) has emerged as a promising alternative to spin-orbit torque owing to the typically larger orbital Hall conductivity. A substantial OT can be generated at metal/oxide interfaces via the orbital Rashba-Edelstein effect (OREE), which has been predominantly reported in surface-oxidized Cu structures. However, the lack of well-defined crystalline and interfacial structures in oxidized Cu has hindered a clear understanding of the underlying mechanism and limited further enhancement of OT. Here, we demonstrate a significantly enhanced OREE in crystalline CuOx/Cu he

Giant orbital torque-driven picosecond switching in magnetic tunnel junctions.

Orbital effects and orbital torque (OT) were recently discovered as a novel pathway for driving the magnetic moment. However, the development of OT-based magnetic memories suffers from low orbital-to-spin conversion efficiency and incompatibility with magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). Here we demonstrate OT-MTJ devices based on Ru/W bilayer, achieving an effective spin-orbit Hall conductivity of -12,600 ħ/2e Ω-1 cm-1. The giant orbital torque originates from the strong orbital effects in the Ru layer and an orbital-to-spin conversion efficiency exceeding 90% in the α-W layer because of the lar

Orbital-hybridization-induced Ising-type superconductivity in a confined gallium layer.

In low-dimensional superconductors, the interplay between quantum confinement and interfacial hybridization effects can reshape Cooper-pair wavefunctions and give rise to unconventional superconducting states. Here we use plasma-free confinement epitaxy assisted by a carbon buffer layer to synthesize a gallium trilayer sandwiched between graphene and a 6H-SiC(0001) substrate. Within this confined gallium layer, we demonstrate interfacial Ising-type superconductivity driven by atomic orbital hybridization. Electrical transport measurements reveal that the in-plane upper critical magnetic field

Nonlocal Talbot effect in the orbital angular momentum domain with entangled photons.

The Talbot effect, a wave-optical self-imaging phenomenon originally observed in real-space, has developed into a powerful framework for programmable modal transformations across diverse physical platforms. Here, we report the experimental demonstration of nonlocal Talbot transformations within a high-dimensional, orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled two-photon system. By exploiting the intrinsic nonlocal correlations generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion, we show that applying an azimuthal Talbot phase on one photon of an entangled pair is sufficient to coherently resha

The "Pacman Flap with Tongue" for Secondary Orbital Reconstruction in Osteoradionecrosis: A Case Series.

Background and Objectives: Orbital exenteration performed for advanced malignancies often results in complex defects that are difficult to reconstruct, particularly in patients treated with adjuvant radiotherapy who subsequently develop osteoradionecrosis. This study describes the preliminary results of a surgical technique for secondary orbital reconstruction using a combined scalp flap and temporalis muscle flap (TMF), referred to as the "Pacman flap with tongue," performed prior to prosthetic rehabilitation. Materials and Methods: Five elderly patients with multiple comorbidities and osteor

A case of orbital solitary fibrous tumor with fast-growing budding morphology.

Orbital solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare and are typically benign and slow‑growing. This report details a unique case of a rapidly progressing benign orbital SFT in a 75-year-old man with recurrent prostate cancer. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) initially revealed an extraconal mass, which, within five months, evolved significantly. Surgical excision revealed a primary encapsulated mass and a smaller, intimately attached, "budding" satellite nodule. Histopathology confirmed benign SFT characteristics with low mitotic activity and strong nuclear STAT6 and CD34 immunoreactivity. This ca

Combined scalp rotation and temporalis muscle flap for orbital exenteration reconstruction.

PURPOSE: The scalp rotation flap is a reliable reconstructive technique for large soft tissue scalp defects. As such, it may be of utility in the reconstruction of orbital exenteration defects. The purpose of this study was to describe the use of the scalp rotation flap in combination with a temporalis regional flap for the reconstruction of orbital exenteration defects. METHODS: Technique description and a multi-centre, retrospective case-series of four patients who presented with orbital invasive recurrent malignancies requiring orbital exenteration between January 2018 and May 2025 were pe

Synchronous orbital and intracranial infantile hemangiomas: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Solitary orbital and parasellar infantile hemangiomas (IHs) without cutaneous manifestations are exceptionally rare, posing significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to the absence of management consensus. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-day-old female infant presented with progressive left-sided proptosis over the course of one month. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed homogeneously enhancing masses in the left orbit (encasing the optic nerve) and the parasellar region, in which imaging characteristics resembled those of a meningioma. No cutaneous lesions

Upper Eyelid Retraction: An Atypical Sign of Orbital Conjunctival Inclusion Cyst.

Orbital conjunctival inclusion cysts are uncommon lesions that may develop as congenital choristomatous rests or as a result of traumatic or iatrogenic implantation of conjunctival epithelium. Depending on their size and location, they can be asymptomatic or cause proptosis, diplopia, mechanical ptosis, and ocular motility disturbances. We report a rare case of a 63-year-old female patient who developed marked upper eyelid retraction due to a conjunctival inclusion cyst associated with a retinal detachment procedure performed 20 years before presentation. A literature review did not disclose a
