EEG microstate changes during hyperbaric oxygen therapy in patients with chronic disorders of consciousness.

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is an effective treatment for patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). In this study, real-time electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings were obtained from patients with DOC during HBO therapy. EEG microstate indicators including mean microstate duration (MMD), ratio of total time covered (RTT), global explained variance (GEV), transition probability, mean occurrence, and mean global field power (GFP) were compared before and during HBO therapy. The results showed that the duration of microstate C in all patients with DOC increased after 20 min of HBO therap

Infradian Rhythms in Cerebrovascular Oxygenation and Blood Volume in Humans at Rest: A 5-Year Study.

BACKGROUND: All parameters of human physiology show chronobiological variability. While circadian (cycle length ~ 24 h) rhythms of the neuronal, hemodynamic and metabolic aspects of human brain activity are increasingly being explored, infradian (cycle length > 24 h) rhythms are largely unexplored. AIM: We investigated if cerebrovascular oxygen saturation (StO2) and blood volume ([tHb]) values measured over many years in many subjects during resting show infradian rhythmicity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Absolute StO2 and [tHb] values (median over a 5 min resting-phase while sitting) were measured

Impaired oxygen extraction and adaptation of intracellular energy metabolism in cerebral small vessel disease.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate whether combined phosphorous (31P) magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) and quantitative T 2 ' mapping are able to detect alterations of the cerebral oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) and intracellular pH (pHi) as markers the of cellular energy metabolism in cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 32 patients with SVD and 17 age-matched healthy control subjects were examined with 3-dimensional 31P MRSI and oxygenation-sensitive quantitative T 2 ' mapping (1/ T 2 '  = 1/T2* - 1/T2) at 3 Tesla (T). PHi was measured within the

Treatment of Pyoderma Gangrenosum With Mycophenolate and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Pyoderma gangrenosum is an uncommon inflammatory ulcerative skin disorder with an unclear etiology. In many cases, it is associated with several underlying systemic diseases, with inflammatory bowel disease being the most common one. Since it does not have any specific clinical or laboratory findings, it is a diagnosis of exclusion. A multidisciplinary approach is vital in treating pyoderma gangrenosum. Its recurrence remains common, and it also has an unpredictable prognosis. Here, we report a case report of pyoderma gangrenosum, which was successfully treated with mycophenolate and hyperbari

Milky pericardial effusion causing tamponade in a neonate after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cannulation.

Cardiac tamponade is a known life-threatening complication of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), often secondary to hemopericardium from major vascular or cardiac perforation. We present the unique case of a neonate with a milky pericardial effusion causing tamponade after ECMO cannulation, managed successfully with pericardial window. Understanding ECMO physiology and its effect on the classic presentation of tamponade is critical and can prevent delays in diagnosis. While hemopericardium is most commonly seen in these cases, findings of a non-bloody, milky effusion should prompt fur

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for central retinal artery occlusion: Visual acuity and time to treatment.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy as a treatment for central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). METHODS: A total of 38 patients who underwent HBO2 for non-arteritic CRAO were identified. Patients with arteritic CRAO, branch retinal artery occlusion, ophthalmic artery occlusion, and other diagnoses were excluded from the analysis. The main outcome measured was the change in visual acuity at the most recent follow-up exam compared to the visual acuity at presentation before the initiation of HBO2 therapy. RESULTS: The overall visual acuity after HBO2 comp

The AngioVac System in Childhood and Adolescence: A New Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation-Like Configuration.

Intravascular and intracardiac clots, thrombi, and vegetative material can be safely and effectively treated with the AngioVac System (AngioDynamics, Latham, NY) as an alternative to open surgery. However, this technology is still not performed in children or adolescents as a rule. We aimed to present our experience with two cases (a 10 year old girl and a 17 year old male adolescent) with concurrent hypoxemia in whom this device was successfully used in combination with venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to remove caval thrombi and cavoatrial septic material, respectively. Management of Malignant Otitis Externa with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: A Case Series of 20 Patients.

Malignant otitis externa (MOE) is an aggressive infection of the external auditory canal that primarily affects diabetic patients. Some literature supports the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as a treatment modality for MOE. A case series was conducted of all patients diagnosed with MOE and treated with HBOT at the Said Bin Sultan Naval Base Polyclinic in Oman between January 2014 and December 2019. A total of 20 patients were included in the study. All participants presented with persistent ear discharge, 95.0% with otalgia, and 75.0% with granulation in the external auditor

Alteration of cholesterol content and oxygen level in intestinal organoids after infection with Staphylococcus aureus.

The pathogenicity elicited by Staphylococcus (S.) aureus, one of the best-studied bacteria, in the intestine is not well understood. Recently, we demonstrated that S. aureus infection induces alterations in membrane composition that are associated with concomitant impairment of intestinal function. Here, we used two organoid models, induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived intestinal organoids and colonic intestinal stem cell-derived intestinal organoids (colonoids), to examine how sterol metabolism and oxygen levels change in response to S. aureus infection. HPLC quantification showed dif

Physiotherapy-led lung ultrasound in neonatal extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation: A case-study.

There is a growing body of evidence to support the use of point of care lung ultrasound (LUS) in adult patients receiving extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). However, literature supporting the use of LUS in neonatal and paediatric ECMO patients is limited. We report the use of physiotherapy-led LUS in a neonatal ECMO patient. The baby required veno-arterial ECMO for long-segment tracheal stenosis and presented with complete right lung collapse. In this situation real time, bedside imaging enabled timely and specific physiotherapy treatment to be implemented. LUS also allowed immediate

Preoperative acute lung injury and oxygenation impairment occurred in the patients with acute aortic dissection.

Acute lung injury (ALI) and oxygenation impairment (OI) frequently occur in the patients with acute aortic dissection (AAD), which may necessitate mechanical ventilation and result in adverse outcomes. This paper aims to increase clinicians' awareness of the severe respiratory complications in the patients with AAD, and provide the overview of the epidemiology, adverse outcomes, pathogenesis, predictive markers and therapeutic modalities of the concurrent conditions. Currently, it is considered that inflammatory response plays a great role in the pathogenesis of ALI and OI in the patients with

Microvascular effects of oxygen and carbon dioxide measured by vascular occlusion test in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Changes in near-infrared spectroscopy-derived regional tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) during a vascular occlusion test (VOT; ischemic provocation of microcirculation by rapid inflation and deflation of a tourniquet) allow estimating peripheral tissue O2 consumption (desaturation slope; DS), vascular reactivity (recovery slope; RS) and post-ischemic hyperperfusion (AUC-H). The effects of isolated alterations in the inspiratory fraction of O2 (FiO2) and changes in expiratory CO2 remain to be elucidated. Therefore, in this secondary analysis we determined the effects of standardized

Alternate oscillations of Martian hydrogen and oxygen upper atmospheres during a major dust storm.

Dust storms on Mars play a role in transporting water from its lower to upper atmosphere, seasonally enhancing hydrogen escape. However, it remains unclear how water is diurnally transported during a dust storm and how its elements, hydrogen and oxygen, are subsequently influenced in the upper atmosphere. Here, we use multi-spacecraft and space telescope observations obtained during a major dust storm in Mars Year 33 to show that hydrogen abundance in the upper atmosphere gradually increases because of water supply above an altitude of 60 km, while oxygen abundance temporarily decreases via wa

Characterization of Oxygen Levels in an Uninfected and Infected Human Blood-Cerebrospinal-Fluid-Barrier Model.

The host-pathogen interaction during meningitis can be investigated with blood-cerebrospinal-fluid-barrier (BCSFB) cell culture models. They are commonly handled under atmospheric oxygen conditions (19-21% O2), although the physiological oxygen conditions are significantly lower in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (7-8% O2). We aimed to characterize oxygen levels in a Streptococcus (S.) suis-infected BCSFB model with transmigrating neutrophils. A BCSFB model with human choroid plexus epithelial cells growing on transwell-filters was used. The upper "blood"-compartment was infected and blood-derived n

Ex vivo normothermic preservation of amputated limbs with a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier perfusate.

BACKGROUND: Ex vivo normothermic limb perfusion (EVNLP) preserves amputated limbs under near-physiologic conditions. Perfusates containing red blood cells (RBCs) have shown to improve outcomes during ex vivo normothermic organ perfusion, when compared with acellular perfusates. To avoid limitations associated with the use of blood-based products, we evaluated the feasibility of EVNLP using a polymerized hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier-201 (HBOC-201). METHODS: Twenty-four porcine forelimbs were procured from Yorkshire pigs. Six forelimbs underwent EVNLP with an HBOC-201-based perfusate, six wi

An oxygen-adaptive interaction between SNHG12 and occludin maintains blood-brain barrier integrity.

Tight junctions (TJs) of brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) play a pivotal role in maintaining the blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity; however, precise regulation of TJs stability in response to physiological and pathological stimuli remains elusive. Here, using RNA immunoprecipitation with next-generation sequencing (RIP-seq) and functional characterization, we identify SNHG12, a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), as being critical for maintaining the BBB integrity by directly interacting with TJ protein occludin. The interaction between SNHG12 and occludin is oxygen adaptive and could

Hierarchical improvement of regional tissue oxygenation after packed red blood cell transfusion.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that counter-regulation to hypoxia follows a hierarchical pattern, with brain-sparing in preference to peripheral tissues. In contrast, it is unknown if the same hierarchical sequence applies to recovery from hypoxia after correction of anemia with packed red blood cell transfusion (PRBCT). OBJECTIVE: To understand the chronology of cerebral and splanchnic tissue oxygenation resulting after correction of anemia by PRBCT in preterm infants using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Neonatal intensive care. PATIENTS

Neurochemical Signalling Associated With Gill Oxygen Sensing and Ventilation: A Receptor Focused Mini-Review.

Despite the large body of work describing vertebrate ventilatory responses to hypoxia, remarkably little is known about the receptors and afferent pathways mediating these responses in fishes. In this review, we aim to summarize all receptor types to date implicated in the neurotransmission or neuromodulation associated with O2 sensing in the gills of fish. This includes serotonergic, cholinergic, purinergic, and dopaminergic receptor subtypes. Recent transcriptomic analysis of the gills of zebrafish using single-cell RNA sequencing has begun to elucidate specific receptor targets in the gill;

Chitosan biguanide induced mitochondrial inhibition to amplify the efficacy of oxygen-sensitive tumor therapies.

At present, the tumor's poor oxygen perfusion and limited tumor drug permeation are the major bottlenecks that limit the therapeutic effectiveness of the oxygen-sensitive antitumor therapies, like doxorubicin (Dox)-mediated chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). To our best knowledge, the abnormal tumor mitochondria oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) was the vital cause of such phenomenon, which induced the hypoxia tumor microenvironment and enhanced drug efflux from tumor cells via enhanced multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR-1) expression. In this study, it was newly revealed that bigu
