Vitreous haemorrhage caused by unusual giant macular tear: a case report.

Macular tears rarely occur without trauma. Here, we describe a patient with vitreous haemorrhage, which was caused by an unusual giant macular tear secondary to existing branch retinal vein occlusion. A 60-year-old woman presented with vision loss in the right eye because of vitreous haemorrhage. She had a history of branch retinal vein occlusion and had been treated with retinal photocoagulation 3 years prior. As treatment for vitreous haemorrhage, the patient underwent 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy combined with silicone oil tamponade. During the operation, a large jagged tear was observed

Timing of surgery in traumatic globe dislocation.

Traumatic globe dislocation into the maxillary sinus is a rare event and usually associated with a poor visual outcome if not managed appropriately. We report a 45-year-old female patient who presented to the emergency after blunt injury to her face with a door. Initial evaluation revealed nil perception of light and an apparently anophthalmic socket. Neuroimaging revealed large floor and medial wall fracture with dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus. The patient underwent exploration with repositioning of the globe and fracture repair. She was also administered 1 g intravenous me

Sialidosis type I: ophthalmological findings.

Sialidosis is a lysosomal storage disease caused by deficit of neuraminidase. It is an autosomal recessive disease, heterogeneous in its onset, presentation and prognosis. We report a case of a male patient with molecular and enzymatic confirmation of the diagnosis. Symptoms began at age 26 with reduced visual acuity, bilateral cherry-red spots and later myoclonus. A brother, now deceased, had the same confirmed disease. We describe the symptoms and clinical findings of the patient, as well review the current knowledge on the topic. With this report, we highlight the importance of a clinical h

The use of single fraction Leksell stereotactic radiosurgery in the treatment of uveal melanoma.

Fourteen patients with posterior uveal melanomas were treated using single fraction stereotactic radiosurgery. In each case a dose of 70 Gy was administered to the periphery of the tumour. Regression of the tumour has been observed in 13 patients, whilst the lesion has remained unchanged in one patient. The visual acuity has deteriorated in all 14 patients. Significant radiation induced adverse reactions were noted in 13 patients and include; retinopathy, optic neuropathy, rubeosis iridis, and secondary glaucoma. Two patients have required enucleation because of intractable rubeotic glaucoma.

Clinical results with a ceramic keratoprosthesis placed through the eyelid.

The authors placed a ceramic keratoprosthesis through the eyelids of 11 consecutive patients: six with alkali injury, four with cicatricial pemphigoid, and one with Stevens-Johnson syndrome. The surgery was technically successful in ten patients. One patient experienced an intraoperative, expulsive choroidal hemorrhage, and the keratoprosthesis was not implanted. Six patients were followed for 21 to 56 months; three, who had no postoperative potential for visual improvement were followed for 2 to 6 months; and one patient died 14 months after surgery. Six patients achieved 20/20 to 20/100 corr
