The Lombard effect in children with cochlear implants: suprasegmental aspects.

Children with cochlear implants (CI) communicate in noisy environments, such as in classrooms, where multiple talkers and reverberation are present. Speakers compensate for noise via the 'Lombard effect'. The present study examined the Lombard effect on the intensity and duration of stressed vowels in the speech of children with Cochlear Implants (CIs) as compared to children with Normal Hearing (NH), focusing on the effects of speech-shaped noise (SSN) and speech-shaped noise with reverberation (SSN+Reverberation). The sample consisted of 7 children with CIs and 7 children with NH, aged 7-12

Sexual Victimization History and Emotion Regulation in Daily Life: A Role for Stress Sensitization.

Relative to other types of traumatic experiences, a lifetime history of sexual violence (SV) has been linked with more persistent and severe mental health outcomes, but the reasons for this discrepancy have not been clearly established. Stress sensitization, or the amplification of responses to daily stressors as a function of trauma history, offers one possible explanation. Using ecological momentary assessment, the current study tested stress sensitization effects in daily life for individuals with a history of SV, focusing on emotion regulation as an outcome. Smartphone surveys were deliver

Acceptance of peer physical examination in medical students in Wuhan, China: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Peer physical examination (PPE) is an essential part of the education of medical students. This study aimed to assess the acceptance level of PPE in Chinese society as well as other related factors. While there have been numerous studies on PPE acceptance in Western societies, there have been relatively few studies on this topic in China. METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed via social media to clinical-year medical students in China. With 1890 students participating overall, the response rate was 86.9%. The questionnaire collected demographic information and previous experien

Beliefs and Perceptions of Physical Activity Among Black Adolescents in South Florida: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, non-Hispanic Black adolescents have a significantly higher prevalence of obesity than their peers. Though physical activity (PA) has many benefits, many adolescents fail to engage in adequate amounts of PA. Black adolescents are also more sedentary than those from other races and ethnicities. This study aimed to describe the perceptions, beliefs, and barriers to PA in South Florida Black adolescents. METHODS: Five focus groups were conducted with self-identified non-Hispanic Black adolescents (n = 38) in South Florida. A semi-structured question guide based

Is It Possible for Patients with Early Distal Junctional Kyphosis following Adult Cervical Deformity Corrective Surgery to Achieve Similar Outcomes to Their Unaffected Counterparts? An Analysis of Recovery Kinetics.

Background: Distal junctional kyphosis (DJK) is a concerning complication for surgeons performing cervical deformity (CD) surgery. Patients sustaining such complications may demonstrate worse recovery profiles compared to their unaffected peers. Methods: DJK was defined as a >10° change in kyphosis between LIV and LIV-2, and a >10° index angle. CD patients were grouped according to the development of DJK by 3M vs. no DJK development. Means comparison tests and regression analyses used to analyze differences between groups and arelevant associations. Results: A total of 113 patients were includ

Improving the care of children with GENetic Rare disease: Observational Cohort study (GenROC)-a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Around 2000 children are born in the UK per year with a neurodevelopmental genetic syndrome with significantly increased morbidity and mortality. Often little is known about expected growth and phenotypes in these children. Parents have responded by setting up social media groups to generate data themselves. Given the significant clinical evidence gaps, this research will attempt to identify growth patterns, developmental profiles and phenotypes, providing data on long-term medical and educational outcomes. This will guide clinicians when to investigate, monitor or treat symptoms

Assessing the Impact of a Culturally Congruent Perinatal Home-Visiting Program on Gestational Age at Delivery for Black Women.

PURPOSE: There is a Black maternal health crisis in America, with significant racial disparities in birth outcomes for Black women in Washington, DC. Programs designed to reduce these inequities must intentionally address the role of systemic racism and the ongoing legacy of oppression that is endemic to traditional perinatal care services. This article describes the findings from the quantitative analysis of an innovative perinatal program (Mothers Rising) designed by and for Black women in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area that was part of a larger mixed methods study. METHODS: Using da

Health Education Initiatives for People Who Have Experienced Prison: A Narrative Review.

Due to the selectiveness of criminal systems and the context of social vulnerability, there is a high prevalence of health problems among individuals with a history of incarceration. When there is an insufficient level of health care, prior clinical conditions can worsen, and health education can be a response to this problem. Health education is a process of building health knowledge that is intended to facilitate thematic appropriation by the population that enables people to access, understand, and use health-related information for health improvement. In the context of criminal justice, he

A Regional Survey of Awareness of Inflammatory Bowel Disease among the Saudi Population.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is common worldwide, including the gulf region. Early diagnosis of IBD can improve patients' outcomes. However, early diagnosis is dependent on patients' awareness of the disease to seek medical advice. This study aimed to survey the awareness of IBD in the general population of the western region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A questionnaire about Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) was distributed to the general public. A score of 1 was given for the right response and 0 for an incorrect response, giving a maximum of 3 and a minimum of

Goal Attainment Scale in tinnitus (GAS-T): treatment goal priorities by chronic tinnitus patients in a real-world setting.

PURPOSE: Standard treatment for tinnitus is cognitive behavioral therapy, although level of evidence of effectiveness is low. There is need for a Goal Attainment Scale to evaluate treatment effects based on patient satisfaction. Preliminary work in a clinical sample has identified six common personal treatment goals. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the preliminary identified goals are confirmed by a heterogeneous sample of people with bothersome tinnitus and to identify any other common personal goals with the intention to construct a closed-end Goal Attainment Scale for tinn

A Scoping Review of Factors Associated With the Mental Health of Young People Who Have "Aged Out" of the Child Welfare System.

Young people who grow up in care and then exit care around the age of 18 (care-leavers) are a particularly vulnerable group, at increased risk for mental health problems even relative to other care-experienced groups. Yet, little is understood about the factors underpinning this association. We used scoping review methods to synthesize the quantitative and qualitative literature on factors that are associated with mental health problems for care-leavers. Following rigorous methods, we systematically searched three scientific databases spanning psychology and social care and identified 23 peer-

Cardiometabolic risk in young adults with Down syndrome.

Studies regarding cardiometabolic risk (CMR) for individuals with Down syndrome (DS) conflict. Our previous research in youth with DS, aged 10-20 years, found increased prevalence of dyslipidemia and prediabetes compared to matched peers without DS. Herein, we compare CMR in young adults with DS, aged 18-35 years, to a similar population-based sample from the 2001-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The group with DS had higher NonHDL-C (mean DS 131.9 mg/dL; NHANES 126.1 p < 0.001), lower HDL-C (DS 47.5 mg/dL; NHANES 52.2 p < 0.001), higher LDL-C (DS 109.3 mg/dL; NH

Serum Ghrelin and Glucagon-like Peptide 1 Levels in Children with Prader-Willi and Bardet-Biedl Syndromes.

OBJECTIVE: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) are causes of pediatric syndromic obesity. We aimed to investigate a possible role for ghrelin and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in the pathophysiology of PWS and BBS. METHODS: The study included 12 children with PWS, 12 children with BBS, 13 pediatric obese controls (OC) and 12 pediatric lean controls (LC). Fasting serum ghrelin and GLP-1 levels were measured by ELISA. RESULTS: In the PWS group, no significant difference was detected for median ghrelin levels when compared with OC and LC, which were 0.96 (0.69-1.15), 0

'My mind pretty much went to mush': A qualitative exploration of trenbolone in the performance and image enhancing drug community.

INTRODUCTION: There are a variety of harms associated with anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), with some AAS associated with an increased risk profile for users. Despite potentially different risk profiles, these harms are seldom discussed with respect to specific compounds although recent ethnographic research has identified a need to do so. Specifically, myth has developed among users with trenbolone reportedly having more dramatic effects on individuals, with reports of aggression, violent behaviour and extreme mood disturbances, and this is reflected in extant literature. This paper aims t

Mesenchymal stromal/stem cell therapy for radiation-induced salivary gland hypofunction in animal models: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland (SG) hypofunction (objectively reduced saliva flow rate) and xerostomia (subjective sensation of dry mouth) are common and burdensome side effects of radiotherapy to the head and neck region. Currently, only sparse symptomatic treatment is available to ease the discomfort of xerostomia. The objective of this study is to assess the effect of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy on SG function after radiation-induced injury. METHODS: This systematic review will include animal intervention studies assessing efficacy and safety of MSCs in treating radiation-induced SG hy

Multidimensional pain profiling in people living with obesity and attending weight management services: a protocol for a longitudinal cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Pain is prevalent in people living with overweight and obesity. Obesity is associated with increased self-reported pain intensity and pain-related disability, reductions in physical functioning and poorer psychological well-being. People living with obesity tend to respond less well to pain treatments or management compared with people living without obesity. Mechanisms linking obesity and pain are complex and may include contributions from and interactions between physiological, behavioural, psychological, sociocultural, biomechanical and genetic factors. Our aim is to study the
