Use of a Combination Lavender/Peppermint Aromatherapy Patch During Port Catheter Placement Under Monitored Anesthesia Care Does Not Reduce Time to Discharge Readiness: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Intraoperative anxiety is a common problem when Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) is used instead of general anesthesia during minor surgical procedures such as port catheter placement. Nonpharmacological anxiolytics such as aromatherapy have been studied for their effects on preoperative anxiety, but no placebo-controlled study of aromatherapy during surgeries under MAC has yet been performed. Methods: After IRB approval, 70 patients were randomized 1:1 to receive either a lavender/peppermint aromatherapy patch (Elequil Aromatabs®; Beekley Corporation) or a matching placebo patch. T

The relationship between mental health problems and risk of infectious diseases: A Mendelian randomization analysis.

The causal effects of mental health problems on the risk of infectious diseases remain vague. Investigating them via observational study is challenging as it presents possible confounding factors. Therefore, the objective of this study was to utilize Mendelian randomization (MR) techniques to evaluate the causal relationship between mental health problems and the risk of infectious diseases. Multivariable MR analyses were performed using genome-wide association data for sleep disorders (N = 216,700), depression (N = 500,199), anxiety (N = 290,361), nervous feelings (N = 450,700), unspecified m

Use of virtual reality in port implantation to reduce perioperative anxiety and pain: protocol for a randomised controlled pilot trial at a single German university hospital (VIP-trial; DRKS00028508).

INTRODUCTION: Intravenous access port implantation is commonly performed under local anaesthesia, which offers advantages such as increased patient satisfaction and resource savings compared with general anaesthesia. However, patients may experience increased perioperative stress and anxiety in the operating room setting without general anaesthesia. Virtual reality (VR) distraction or hypnosis during surgery under local anaesthesia may help patients to auditorily and visually separate from their real environment and engage with a virtual environment through hypnorelaxing guidance. Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdown measures on the management, health, and behavior of the cystic fibrosis population in France during 2020 (MUCONFIN).

BACKGROUND: Most of the studies on cystic fibrosis (CF) focused on SARS-CoV-2 prevalence and suggested a low incidence of infection in this population. We aimed to assess the impact of the pandemic and related lockdown measures implemented in May 2020 in response to the first wave of SARS-CoV-2 infection on healthcare access, health, and behavior in CF patients. METHODS: A national questionnaire opened online from May 15th, 2020 to June 11th, 2020 was completed by 751 CF-patients, aged 14 years and over. It comprised questions about access to healthcare, anxiety and depression, smoking, alcoh

Association between Psychological Status and Condylar Bony Changes in Adults: A Retrospective Survey-Based Study.

Background: This article studies the association between psychological status and condylar bony changes in adults and assesses psychological questionnaires as an indicator of potential condylar bony changes. It is meaningful because condylar bony changes, a severe subtype of TMD and big concern in orthodontic treatment, would likely be ignored in patients with few TMD symptoms, in which case, even with potential psychological problems (depression, somatization and anxiety) being noticed, orthodontists may underestimate the possibility or severity of condylar bony changes and thus may not perfo

Improving ambulance care for children suffering acute pain: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a highly complex sensory and emotional experience. When a child suffers acute pain through illness or injury, they are often transported to hospital by ambulance. Pre-hospital pain management in children is poor, with 61% of children receiving suboptimal pain management. Consequences of poor pain management include the risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder and altered pain perception. We aimed to identify clinicians' perceptions of barriers, facilitators and potential improvements for the management of pre-hospital acute pain in children. METHODS: Qualitative f
