The authors describe their experience with surgery of suspected TOS (8 cases) and traumatic TOS after clavicular fracture (1 case) in the last 2 years. In the group there were 7 women and 2 men aged 39-59 years with a history from 6 months to 26 years. Seven patients reported complete or almost complete relief of symptoms. In one case we observed progressive deterioration during 6 weeks postoperatively. All patients underwent decompression of the brachial plexus and subclavian artery from a supraclavicular approach. There was one case of reoperation after 15 years after primary surgery.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the effects of associating several currently used drugs: local anesthetics, corticosteroids, morphine hydrochloride and clonidine administered using continual epidural in lumbosciatic back pain. The association of an opiate and a solution of local anesthetic through infusion increases the analgesic effect and allows smaller quantities of both drugs to be used. The authors from a department with numerous thyroid gland operations present their experience and operative complications. In this department, routine dissection of the recurrent laryngeal nerve is not performed, a method of a strietly subcapsular dissection of the gland with thorough preoperative haemostasis is used. Dissection of the nerve is performed only in necessary cases. Nevertheless, the operative complications do not differ from those of other departments with a similar field of interest. Emphasis is put especially on careful dissection and the surgeon's experience.

In two cases histological examination of the lymph nodes excised during mediastinoscopy showed non-caseous epithelioid granulomas. In one patient with hilar lymphadenopathy sarcoidosis was misdiagnosed. One-year later progression of lesions in lungs was found and adenocarcinoma was diagnosed. In second patient with tumour in chest x-ray examination after misdiagnosed sarcoidosis thoracotomy was done and histological examination of samples from tumour showed nonsmall cell lung cancer. In both carcinomatous cases sarcoid reaction was recognised.

OBJECTIVE: To describe use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by in-line skaters at four different skate settings (rink, park, trail and street) in Melbourne and rural Victoria, and to compare local PPE with reported international use.
METHOD: Unobtrusive observations of in-line skaters at four types of skate settings (rinks, parks, trails, street) in Melbourne and rural Victoria.
RESULTS: Two-thirds of 490 observed in-line skaters (66.7%) wore none of the recommended PPE (wrist guards, elbow and knee pads and helmets). Only 2.2% wore all four pieces of PPE. Wrist guards were worn by 25.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the perceptions of 115 female spouse caregivers of early to moderate stage dementia patients. Based on patients' cognitive status, cross-sectional comparisons of two groups of caregiving wives were conducted.
