Palatopharyngeus has respiratory activity and responds to negative pressure in sleep apnoeics.

The intrinsic tongue muscle, genioglossus, and soft palatal muscles, tensor palatini, levator palatini and palatoglossus, are known to exhib … sleep apnoea patients, using bipolar electromyography during nose- or mouth-breathing in different postures, and with or without application of negative pressure. Overall, palatopharyngeus and levator palatini demonstrated phasic respiratory activity. Palatopharyngeus demonstrated increased activity in the supine compared to erect posture. Analysis by ro …

Dopamine D-1 and D-2 receptor antagonists potentiate analgesic and motor effects of morphine.

To examine the role of dopamine receptor subtypes mediating analgesic and motor responses to opioids, rats were pretreated with either saline or a selective D-1 or D-2 dopamine receptor antagonist 10 min prior to morphine (12 mg/kg IP). Analgesic response latency was determined using the hot plate test (52.5 degrees C and 55 degrees C), and catalepsy was assessed using the abnormal posture test. Morphine increased analgesic response latency to 44.5 +/- 7.9% of the maximum possible response, but had no cataleptic effect in the abnormal posture test. Pretreatment with either the D-1 antagonist, …

Relationship between tubal function, craniofacial morphology and disorder of deglutition.

26 children without hearing impairment have been examined by otolaryngologists and orthodontists. According to the tubal function test in a … c analysis of lateral head films combined with a static and dynamic-functional evaluation of tongue posture revealed significant differences between children with good and poor tubal function. Subjects with a vertical craniofacial growth pattern seem to be predisposed for poor tubal function. Analysing static tongue posture in children with poor tubal fun …

A syndrome of alveolar hypoventilation has been identified in a group of patients with bilateral diaphragm paralysis. Eight patients were st … is are considered. Vital capacity ranged from 65-30 per cent of the predicted normal in the upright posture, typically falling by about a half in the supine posture. Alveolar hypoventilation was present in five patients when supine and in six when asleep, the deterioration in blood gases associated with sleep generally being much greater in these patients …

Effect of cerebrospinal fluid shunts on intracranial pressure and on cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. 2. A new technique of pressure measurements: results and concepts. 3. A concept of hydrocephalus.

Part 2 describes measurements of intracranial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure in 18 adult patients with CSF shunts, all pressure measurements being referred to a horizontal plane close to the foramina of Monro. All 18 patients had normal CSF pressure by lumbar puncture; however, in one patient an intracranial pressure of +280 mm was subsequently measured after pneumoencephalography. Twelve patients had pre-shunt CSF pressures measured intracranially: 11 ranged from +20 to +180 mm H(2)O and one was +280 mm H(2)O in the supine position. In the upright posture nine patients had values of -10 t…

Balance effort, Cone of Economy, and dynamic compensatory mechanisms in common degenerative spinal pathologies.

BACKGROUND: Changes in balance are common in individuals with spinal disorders and may cause falls. Balance efficiency, is the ability of a person to maintain their center of gravity with minimal neuromuscular energy expenditure, oftentimes referred to as Cone of Economy (CoE). CoE balance is defined by two sets of measures taken from the center of mass (CoM) and head: 1) the range-of-sway (RoS) in the coronal and sagittal planes, and 2) the overall sway distance. This allows spine caregivers to assess the severity of a patient's balance, balance pattern, and dynamic posture and record the cha…

Reductions in body sway responses to a rhythmic support surface tilt perturbation can be caused by other mechanisms than prediction.

Studies investigating balance control often use external perturbations to probe the system. These perturbations can be administered as randomized, pseudo-randomized, or predictable sequences. As predictability of a given perturbation can affect balance performance, the way those perturbations are constructed may affect the results of the experiments. In the present study, we hypothesized that subjects are able to adapt to short, rhythmic support surface tilt stimuli, but not to long pseudo-random stimuli. 19 subjects were standing with eyes closed on a servo-controlled platform tilting about t

Clinical evaluation of the Hemi Wheelchair Cushion.

A foam cushion was designed for wheelchair users who propel their wheelchairs with the assistance of one lower extremity. It allows users to extend one hip to reach the ground without having to slide forward on the seat, thus maintaining a more erect posture. The cushion was evaluated to identify contraindications for its use. Eleven subjects (10 stroke patients and 1 patient with an above-the-knee amputation) were tested on the Hemi Wheelchair Cushion and on a second cushion chosen by their primary occupational therapists. Seat interface pressures, both before and after dynamic movement, sitt…

The direction of apparent movement during transient pressure vertigo.

Pressure vertigo or alternobaric vertigo is the type of vertigo normally associated with relative overpressure in the middle ear. As with other types of vertigo, it should occur only if there is unequal stimulation of the left and right vestibular systems: there should be a lawful relation between the orientation of the head, the side of the overpressured ear, and the direction of apparent movement. Few published accounts give information on all these aspects. This paper reports some old and new cases which suggests that, when the head is upright during the ascent, overpressure in the right ea

A Meta-Learning Framework for Few-Shot Dynamic Hand Gesture Recognition with Soft Temporal-aware Contrastive Learning.

Few-shot learning improves data efficiency in surface electromyography (sEMG) gesture recognition, yet cross-subject and cross-posture generalization remains challenging due to nonstationary signals, electrode displacement, and time-varying within-gesture dynamics. We propose STC+Meta, a framework that couples temporally informed representation learning with efficient personalization. In pre-training, a soft temporal contrastive loss assigns adaptive weights by time lag to encourage temporal continuity while preserving short-lived discriminative transients, yielding coherent fused features fro…

Discordance in spinopelvic alignment between weight-bearing and supine positions on three-dimensional computed tomography.

Given the functional role of spinal curves supporting dynamic motion, imaging in the supine position does not adequately reflect the biomech … rthermore, PI values differed significantly between WBCT and standing X-ray (WBXR) even in the same posture (p = 0.031), possibly due to projectional distortion. PI is a dynamic, posture- and modality-dependent parameter affected by coronal rotation and fusion status. These findings challenge its conventional interpretation and support the use of weight-b …

The Effect of Compensatory Strategies in Reducing to Postoperative Airway Invasion, and Pharyngeal Residue in Patients Undergoing Esophagectomy for Esophageal Cancer.

Few studies have reported the effects of dysphagia management after esophagectomy in esophageal cancer. We aimed to investigate the impact of liquid modification and chin-tuck posture (head flexion) on reducing airway invasion and pharyngeal residue after esophagectomy. We included patients who underwent esophagectomy between June 2017 and January 2020. A videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) was conducted on 5 ml liquid boluses with four viscosities: thin, mildly thickened, moderately thickened, and extremely thickened, all administered in a neutral head position. Trials with thin and mod…
