A hypertensive patient who had been treated successfully for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), died from a left thalamic haemorrhage. Neuropathological examination showed recent and old thalamic haematomas and numerous parenchymal cavities or 'cerebral lacunae'. 18-Oxo-cortisol (18-oxo-F) has been isolated from the urine of subjects with primary aldosteronism. This study examines the pressor, mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid effects of 18-oxo-F in conscious sheep--a well studied species for the assessment of the pressor effect of steroid hormones. 18-oxo-F (24 mg/day i.v. for 5 days, n = 3) increased mean arterial pressure MAP (64 +/- 2 mmHg control and 75 +/- 6 mmHg on day 5 P less than 0.001). We analyzed the relationship between the hemodynamics of the anterior ciliary artery and intraocular pressure (IOP) by measuring the pressure of the artery with a modified pressure chamber method and the diameter of the artery on color photographs taken with a photo slit lamp (Zeiss). In order to elucidate further the mechanisms of central necrosis formation and drug delivery into tumor tissue, the interstitial fluid pressure in the normal subcutis and in rat ascites hepatoma AH109A and AH272 tumors was measured by means of a modified diffusion chamber technique. From 1981 to 1985 a prospective study on normal pressure hydrocephalus was performed. One of the aims of this study was to determine the site of CSF obstruction. Among 17 consecutive patients with a tentative diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, nine appeared to have non-communicating hydrocephalus most probably due to primary non-tumoural aqueduct stenosis. The cough urethral pressure profile has been used to identify patients with genuine stress urinary incontinence. One hundred forty-four patients were studied to determine the value of this test in the evaluation of patients presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms. In the sitting position with a full bladder the test has a high specificity (92%) but relatively low sensitivity (41%). The clinical ramifications of using the test "cough pressure profile" and the definition "genuine stress urinary incontinence" are discussed.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were compressed in helium-oxygen mixture at a rate of 3 bar/min. Compression ended once the first convulsion was seen. Saline or barbituric acid at 1 or 2% were infused continuously during compression at a rate of 9.49 ml/h (tail vein). With barbituric acid at 1%, coarse tremor and convulsions appeared at higher pressures than in saline controls. No significant change was observed with 2% barbituric acid compared to saline controls. The effect of 10 mg of sublingual nifedipine on the lower esophageal sphincter pressure (LESP) was studied by continuous perfusion manometry in 15 Chagasic patients and 9 controls. Resting LESP was lower in Chagasic patients (13.51 +/- 2.37 mmHg) than in controls (19.60 +/- 2.51 mmHg, P less than 0.02). Endogenous biochemical regulation of diurnal changes in intraocular pressure was investigated in rabbits.
