Effects of late-life captivity: preliminary findings following the 7 October attack.

Background: Posttraumatic responses (PTR, i.e. posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], complex PTSD, prolonged grief, depression, and anxiety) have not been examined following late-life captivity. Most of the captivity literature focuses on young prisoners of war and, to a lesser extent, on younger civilians. Objective: To assess PTR levels in older ex-captives and potential risk factors for elevated PTR following late-life captivity. Methods: We assessed 26 Jewish Israeli older adults (mean age = 82.11±7.23, from Kibbutzim [rural close-knit agricultural communities] in the Gaza envelope) who were

Accelerated DNA profiling through workflow reconfiguration: Practical experience from 2-year postmortem skeletal remains in hostage repatriation.

The identification of human remains in mass-casualty incidents requires rapid and reliable forensic DNA analysis, particularly when dealing with degraded skeletal material. Although rapid forensic identification is a fundamental objective in all disaster victim identification (DVI) operations, the repatriation of deceased hostages from the October 7, 2023, attack, c. 2 years postmortem (PM), imposed an additional challenge of a fixed operational deadline dictated by the implementation of the hostages-prisoners exchange agreement. To accelerate STR profiling, we reconfigured the conventional se

A Costing Analysis of a Nurse- and Peer-Led Mobile Model of Hepatitis C Care Adjacent to the Community Corrections Setting.

BACKGROUND: Prison-based hepatitis C models of care treat significant numbers of people in Australia but exclude most of the criminal justice system, individuals serving their sentence in the community, on community corrections orders. We estimate the cost of a nurse- and peer-led model of hepatitis C care, offering hepatitis C virus (HCV) point-of-care testing and treatment initiation, adjacent to the community corrections setting in Melbourne, Australia. METHODS: Data from September 2023 to March 2025 for the C No More program were incorporated. All costs were estimated from a service provi

County Incarceration Rate and Stroke Death: A Cross-Sectional Study of the Influence of Physical Environment, Health Care Access, and Community Mental Distress.

BACKGROUND: Few studies assess the association between county-level incarceration rates and stroke death, and none test mechanisms. We examine the link between county imprisonment rates and stroke death, testing pathways and identifying racial disparities. METHODS: In a cross-sectional design, we regressed stroke death onto imprisonment rates, adjusting for poverty, racial composition, education, unemployment, insurance, and violent crime. Using bootstrap methodology, we tested mediation through sports/recreational facilities and food environment, mental health provider and primary care physi

Evaluating referrals to three urban specialist mental health services for people experiencing homelessness over a 1-year period.

BACKGROUND: There are high numbers of people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in Ireland. PEH have complex needs, and have higher rates of mental disorder than their housed counterparts. To date, there has been limited research conducted on this population, and their specific needs. AIMS: In this study, we explored the demand for the three specialist mental health services for people experiencing homelessness (MHSPEH) in Dublin by evaluating all referrals received over a 1 year period. METHODS: Participants included all persons referred to the three (MHSPEH) over 1 year between 1st July 2022

Social isolation consequences: lessons from COVID-19 pandemic in a context of dynamic lock-down in Chile.

BACKGROUND: Chile did not adopt general and unified lockdowns for the whole nation but organized itself with dynamic and sometimes irregular lockdowns. These dynamics and consequences of social isolation could be generalized to other contexts of isolation such as those affecting minorities such as immigrants, prisoners, refugees. METHODS: In this study, we investigated the physical and mental health symptoms associated with lifestyle changes due to lockdown among university students in Chile. We examined psychopathological variations in relation to mental health problems in a healthy young po

How we understand fully the supply, demand, and harm reduction in drugs policy in Vietnam?

Since the 1990s, Vietnam has begun prioritising preventing and combating drug-related crimes (supply reduction) and rehabilitating drug users (demand reduction). In the 2000s, harm reduction approaches in relation to drug control began to be recognised as one of Vietnam's opiate substitution therapy methods before embarking on greater drug policy reform in the early 2010s. In implementing the ideology of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the anti-narcotic police forces often apply a zero-tolerance approach to drug traffickers and identify drug users as a priority applies a zero-tolerance approac

Self-stigma of incarceration and its impact on health and community integration.

BACKGROUND: Individuals returning to the wider community from incarceration face many re-entry barriers, including stigmatising beliefs regarding past criminal record, that have impact on health and re-entry. Understanding the development and impact of self-stigma on health can inform re-entry and rehabilitation services. AIMS: The two aims of this study were first, to evaluate a previously established model of self-stigma applied to individuals who have experienced incarceration and, secondly, to study the impact of self-stigma on physical and mental health as well as community integration o

Emotional Dysregulation, Anger, and Masculinity in Men Who Have Experienced Lifetime Sexual Violence.

Many men experience strong negative emotions and a "diminished masculinity" following sexual victimization. These men may be more willing to express anger, rather than more vulnerable emotions (e.g., shame), in an attempt to maintain their masculinity. However, increased expression of anger among men is linked to other negative outcomes such as increased substance abuse (Eftekhari et al., 2004), suggesting that anger is an ineffective coping strategy for distress. Compared to women, men are understudied in the sexual violence literature. Studies that have been conducted have focused primarily

Anti-Donor T-Cell Responses Are Not Necessarily Attenuated During Cytomegalovirus Infection in Kidney Transplant Recipients.

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV), the most common opportunistic infection of kidney transplantation (KT), is preventable by prophylactic and preemptive antiviral drugs in CMV-immunoglobulin (Ig)G-positive donors. Our preemptive therapy optimized immunosuppressive doses based on mixed lymphocyte response (MLR) results, regardless of preoperative CMV-IgG serostatus pairing. This study used the MLR to compare the anti-donor T-cell responses between CMV antigenemia-positive and -negative cases. METHODS: One hundred patients underwent KT using a cyclosporine (CsA)-based immunosuppressive regimen

Conditions of Confinement in U.S. Carceral Facilities During COVID-19: Individuals Speak-Incarcerated During the COVID-19 Epidemic.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe conditions of confinement among people incarcerated in the United States during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic using a community-science data collection approach. METHODS: We developed a web-based survey with community partners to collect information on confinement conditions (COVID-19 safety, basic needs, support). Formerly incarcerated adults released after March 1, 2020, or nonincarcerated adults in communication with an incarcerated person (proxy) were recruited through social media from July 25, 2020 to March 27, 2021. State-Level Indicators of Structural Racism and Severe Adverse Maternal Outcomes During Childbirth.

OBJECTIVES: Structural racism (SR) is viewed as a root cause of racial and ethnic disparities in maternal health outcomes. However, evidence linking SR to increased odds of severe adverse maternal outcomes (SAMO) is scant. This study assessed the association between state-level indicators of SR and SAMO during childbirth. METHODS: Data for non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic white women came from the US Natality file, 2017-2018. The exposures were state-level Black-to-white inequity ratios for lower education level, unemployment, and prison incarceration. The outcome was patient-level SAMO, i

Past incarceration and chlamydia infection among young Black men in New Orleans.

BACKGROUND: Young Black men are disproportionately and adversely affected by incarceration and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), both of which share common social and structural determinants. It is well documented that incarcerated individuals, including youth, are more likely to acquire STIs in the carceral setting compared to the general population. However, the effects of imprisonment on sexual health outcomes after imprisonment are not well-understood. The relationship between incarceration history (having ever spent time in a correctional institution such as prison, jail, or juvenil

Evaluation of HIV-Related Cardiomyopathy in HIV-Positive Patients in Bushehr, Iran.

Objectives In 2020, according to the UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS), more than 37 million people lived with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection worldwide. The disease is known to affect several organs, and one of the most affected organs is the heart. Cardiac diseases are highly prevalent among HIV-infected individuals, and recent findings suggest that this could be due to the damage caused by the virus. HIV patients are subject to advanced immunosuppression, which may lead to cardiac muscle damage and, in turn, cardiomyopathy. We aimed to study the incidence of H

High Security Settings in Flanders: An Analysis of Discharged and Long-Term Forensic Psychiatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: Two Forensic Psychiatric Centres (FPC) were implemented the last decade in Flanders in Ghent (2014) and Antwerp (2017). FPCs are forensic institutions for forensic psychiatric patients with a high recidivism risk and a high security need. The objective of FPCs is to create a care process with sufficient flow (from high to lower forms of security), and transitions (from specialized forensic care to regular psychiatric care). AIMS: To examine the characteristics of the high security population in FPCs, treatment length, number of discharges, and discharge locations and to determine

Hepatitis C Epidemiology in a Large Urban Jail: A Changing Demographic.

OBJECTIVES: Nearly 1 in 3 people with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection pass through the criminal justice system annually; the system is a crucial location for HCV screening, education, and linkage to care. We aimed to (1) determine the prevalence and incidence of HCV antibody positivity and (2) evaluate the demographic characteristics of people with HCV in a large urban jail. METHODS: We offered universal opt-out HCV testing to any person undergoing a routine blood test at the Dallas County Jail from June 2015 through December 2019 (N = 14 490). We extracted data on demographic characteristi

A time to 'make amends and bring pieces together': A phenomenological study of family experiences and considerations when a parent returns home from incarceration.

Nearly 1 in every 14 youth have had a parent incarcerated at some point. In any given year, over 9 million adults from jail and 700,000 adults from prison return to their families and communities. However, few studies have explored the family experiences during re-entry or have provided suggestions on how to best support children during this time. The goal of this qualitative study was to describe family experiences and provide their considerations on how to better support children during the period of parent's re-entry. Qualitative data was gathered from 26 participants using semi-structured,

Structural violence and the need for compassionate use of methadone in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data from Mexico have documented an increase in heroin use in the last decade. However, there is no comprehensive care strategy for heroin users, especially those who have been accused of a crime. The objective of this study was to describe the heroin and methadone use of intravenous heroin users of both sexes who have been in jail, to offer evidence for the formulation of health policy. METHODS: This study used an ethnographic approach, with open-ended interviews carried out from 2014 to the present. Heroin users of both sexes attending a private methadone clinic
